Yeah it seems like bad assumptions were made based on George's identity rather than who he actually is, apparently because they never bothered to ask him. Maybe they were trying to surprise him? That wrong assumption has overshadowed the actual thing in the movie, which people don't even care that much about.

Why should the previous actor decide who future interpretations of the role are performed? There's nothing wrong with taking input, but they shouldn't get to control the character because they played them first.
