Writing In A New Chekov

Chekov is in the unusual space of being both a secondary character yet iconic in many ways.

I don't think they'll recast the character. Yelchin's death has left a big void and they'll likely salute him by retiring the character and making reference to his off-screen death on-screen. I wouldn't preclude the possibility of them featuring Chekov's funeral at the start of their 4th installment. I don't think they'll promote the Chekov character. It depends how genuinely bold the writers are - as killing off a main part of the cast would be a bold creative move. But why not? No reason not to do it really.

Not sure what you were getting at when you said promote, but if they do show a funeral, it would be nice to have him mentioned as a Lieutenant.

I like that idea.

It never made sense to me that in the original series, almost every single character stayed aboard the Enterprise the entire time. With the exception of the holy trinity leaving in TMP, you only really had Rand leave the ship during TOS, Chekov in TWOK (to come back at the end), Scotty in TSFS (for about four minutes) and Sulu (really the only permanent one) in TUC leave the Enterprise. Never made any sense to me. In the JJverse, Chekov leaving the Enterprise and going off and having an amazing career makes a lot more sense in the grand scheme of things. Its sad. He will be missed for future installments, but I'm sure they'll handle it well.

I like the idea of whoever said bring in Lt. Ilia. They could say he went off to serve on the Reliant and at least for one movie bring in another character. It's going to be awkward just recasting the character and in poor taste.

Also to consider is the contemporary question of how long will this series of movies go on for? Reboots are a new normal, and we're on, what the third Spiderman in a decade? It isn't like the old days where these actors will play these characters for the next fifty years. Let the character come back in the next iteration, or a movie or have him play an important guest-starring role in a future movie where he has something to do.

In the meantime, I think Ilia could be a good one to reintroduce, given the more sexually aware time we're in now and how she, from an even more sexually sophisticated culture, could be a powerful character through which Trek could say something.

Given Trek's lackluster record with sex in movies (Uhura and Spock bickering like idiots while they're about to be shot out of the air; Carol Marcus's awkward underwear scene; Kirk being a one-dimensional lothario complete with twin space-kitty babes), and given other sci-fi's advances in it (nuBSG; hell, Starship Troopers), maybe Ilia could come in as an elegant, unnervingly attractive, and thematically-rich character.

If the Enterprise bites it in Beyond anyway, the nuE-A would be a great place to introduce her (as she came in previously with the Refit in TMP), and it'd be more realistic that crew could come and go on a new ship.

I think even in the event of declining interest in these movies they are such a cashcow that we'll be seeing many more of them.

We may come to a point where they recast Chris Pine if he doesn't want to do it anymore.

Chekov became chief engineer on Starship after only a year of service so a promotion to a new ship in a more senior position to navigator makes a lot of sense.

My personal view overall is that Rand should have been in the movies, starting as Pike's yeoman, from the beginning, as a more security-trained supporting character like Keenser or Cupcake, rather than leaving her out altogether. She would not need many lines but would be a female presence - she could have helped subdue Kirk in ST09 or been part of the shuttle crew in STID (although why you would take your secretary on that kind of mission is a bit of a stretch).

Three movies in and still no Rand. Chapel was written out unceremoniously, and the timing coming just after Majel's passing really grated on me. Alice Eve has not returned for this movie, making her effectively a guest star. They need more recurring female characters and I'd prefer to see them reboot and update the existing ones than start fresh.

Bringing in Ilia is a logical step at navigation and improves the female dynamic while at the same time leaving scope for the juvenile humour - Deltans have no sexual hang ups so why would Ilia worry about stripping to her underwear? She could potentially turn the tables on Kirk in that regard.

I don't favour the focus of her character being on sexuality but as far as the NuTrek writers go, they could be snickering behind their hands for hours (not a euphemism). It's a plus for them. Further, her empathic abilities are nebulous enough to be interesting and not plot busting like Troi - they appear to be pheromone based rather than telepathic (although Deltan's do seem to have telepathic links to other Deltans in the novels at least). Actually having a scientific basis for the abilities can lead to interesting story ideas (using her own pheromones to affect someone else's brain chemistry is something we saw in TMP for example).

Finally, if they left Chekov out in the fourth movie and brought in his younger brother in the fifth, Trekkies would understand that this is the REAL Chekov Prime. It remains respectful to Yelchin's contribution while pandering to nerd-ragers like me who were irritated at them shoe-horning in a character as a name-check in favour of other (notably female) characters that would have been as effective and the correct age to appear.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Yelchin's contribution and his death is a terrible tragedy. I don't think his contribution would be diminished by recasting but nor do I think Chekov is so vital that recasting is necessary. I'd rather Yelchin's Chekov lived on albeit off camera.

I'm all for more women in the franchise but Illia does not interest me in the least. I'd rather they bring in a new character.

There is no real need to replace Chekov really, he is a important character but not a main character. Just giving him a transfer somewhere like in the prime universe with a little comment about hearing that he had settled in well in his new posting would do it for me.

The women of the original franchise need updating. They were generally so poorly written that you would pretty much be getting a different character in many respects but no more so than NuChekov being an engineering wunderkind. NuChekov was fun to watch despite him having nothing in common with Chekov except a name, nationality and gender. The fact that Ilia did not get much chance to develop in TMP would not preclude her being interesting in the reboot. Having said that, with six other recurring characters, I don't think I'd favour them giving too much air time to any new characters that aren't fundamental to the plot.

I'd be delighted with Ilia being introduced (although I doubt they could get anyone to look as good bald as Persis) and possibly a cameo for Decker.

Rand ? Riley ? Why not ?

I thought Ilia was boring, and remarkably sexless considering she was supposed to come from a shag-mad culture.

If they can't bring back Carol Marcus I'd rather they create a new character.

But it just occurred to me - what if they brought in Saavik early, and there was a bit of a triangle with Spock/Uhura? It would be a way to really grapple with the post-Vulcan future.

I'm not sure Deltans were really supposed to be "shag-mad" at all as we would describe it, but rather possessed of a sexuality beyond that which we "immature" humans are emotionally and intellectually equipped for. Combine this with the fact that she had taken an oath of celibacy to avoid potential harm and disharmony among her crewmates resulting from this "advanced" sexuality, and I don't find it surprising at all that she might not conform to our notions of what seems "sexy." Also, don't forget she spent most of the movie as an emotionally-repressed android probe doppelganger!

Deltan or not, I'd be happy to see her back on the ship.
Was that...a pun? :vulcan:

Maybe this thread should have waited a little longer but now that it is here I will voice my opinion:
First and for most I don't know if they have enough time to update Star Trek Beyond or the prints are already done and sent out, but if they aren't done as yet or sent out they should modify it with the "In loving memory off" at the beginning of the movie or right when credits start to roll. For digital projections this shouldn't be a problem but for movie prints it might be to late.

There are no film prints, since there's no more film in movies as of 2012; all movies are digital, and are sent to movie theaters to be on a hard drive (or in the case of IMAX, are a large laserdisk, IIRC.) So Paramount can modify all copies of the movie worldwide to have the dedication to Anton in them.

Yes, but when the movie's shown in theaters, it isn't film, but a digital thing on a hard drive. That's how Star Trek Beyond will be so that the tribute can be inserted.
That still means, however, that film is still used in movies. Additionally, not every theatre has yet to convert to digital, especially the smaller non-big chain theatres.

Pardon me, but I could've sworn that ALL cinema everywhere had to convert to digital back in 2012. If so, that's a new one on me.

as tragic the events are, I always wanted for the NuVerse to build their own lore, their own way of presenting the Star Trek world. that, to me, always included sooner or later new characters created for those films taking over from the reboot cast whenever one of the many actors might drop out of the franchise (which, given the high profile of most of the cast members was always something to be considered). I always thoght that one day maybe Pine, maybe Saldana or Urban or anyone from the main cast will either be too expensive for another sequel or aren't interested in doing another one. So subsituting their characters with new ones and watching the dynamics of the crew change was something I was looking forward to. An opportunity to shake things up.
(not because I don't like the actors/characters, but because I can appreciate change and to underline the point, that the NuVerse isn't necessarily the PrimeVerse, that it hasn't to be it always was)

obviously I'm sad that a cast member had to die, the most horrible cause I could think of why he wouldn't be in another Star Trek movie. I wish it wouldn't have happend. but I have to admit, the opportunity it opens for a potential sequel exites me a little. if a sequel happens it forces writers and producers to make bold decisions and hopefully create a new member of the family that expands the NuVerse further
