Writing In A New Chekov

If these movies continue at all beyond the upcoming one (no pun intended), they will either recast the part (I don't see why anyone has a problem with this, it happens all the time)
For those of us who like a certain level or realism, consistency and integrity, swapping out faces takes away from that. And although it's still done from time to time, a lot of productions nowadays do avoid it by writing characters out.

Ridiculous. Marvel's done it, Harry Potter's done it, Batman's done it, James Bond's done it...oh, and Star Trek too. Many times. The entire reboot is based around recasting in the first place!

It's not ridiculous. Not everyone likes recasting. As for your examples, each case is different. Sometimes actors are so heavily made-up that it doesn't matter who plays a certain character. And rebooting isn't the same as recasting. It's simply a new work with a new cast.

They cast Maggie Gyllenhall in the Dark Knight and we are on our third Hulk but Chekov is a supporting character rather than a lead. His presence on the ship is not a necessity and in some ways, the franchise might have more longevity if they cast the net wider than the Big 7 while most of them are still up for making more. That way they do not have to do multiple re-casts when some of the actors move on to other things one way or another; they will just move up Ilia or some other newly established character to a larger role in the following movie and bring in Saavik to replace her at navigation.

Chekov is in the unusual space of being both a secondary character yet iconic in many ways.

I don't think they'll recast the character. Yelchin's death has left a big void and they'll likely salute him by retiring the character and making reference to his off-screen death on-screen. I wouldn't preclude the possibility of them featuring Chekov's funeral at the start of their 4th installment. I don't think they'll promote the Chekov character. It depends how genuinely bold the writers are - as killing off a main part of the cast would be a bold creative move. But why not? No reason not to do it really.

Surely there's a minor female character from TOS that could be re-used?
On the one hand, I think it lame to reset the timeline yet go on to rely too heavily on old timeline elements for no good reason (cough, CumberKhan, cough). And the senior staff could definitely use another woman. A sister or cousin of Pavel, with a similar accent, could work, though I'd rather she not be related.

That said, I do kind of like the idea of rebooting a TOS woman officer. How about Lt. Moreau? And, if they could make a good and different Mirror Universe story, I might not be opposed to that, either... :bolian:

It would be interesting to see the NuVerse do their spin on the MU, and I'd love the irony of introducing Moreau, ideally as a competent officer with absolutely no interest in Kirk, in the NuVerse before the inevitable crossover occurs.

I'm on the side of making a new character in this instance. The part was already re-cast once, doing it again wouldn't feel right plus it would give them the opportunity to explore new characters, like maybe this universe's version of Kevin Riley or even add a sorely needed female character.

The only way there isn't a 4th film is if Beyond bombs.
And the only way Beyond won't bomb is if the movie actually gets promoted. Unfortunately, Yelchin's death is the only thing that has drawn the general public's attention to the fact there's a new Star Trek movie coming.

Considering all the press Anton Yelchin's death is receiving, especially now that it's become a federal investigation- http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment...roner-rules-Anton-Yelchin-s-death-8313200.php - I am inclined to think that Paramount will tread these waters carefully. It's not like a studio hasn't had to deal with things like this before; the director and producers of Furious 7 actually had to rework the movie to allow the retirement of Paul Walker's character in the wake of his death.

I think we'll see a new character, not a recast. I just can't see anyone working on these movies even agreeing to recast the character, especially as everyone seemed to have such a high regard for Anton.

Looking around social media it's interesting what different people think is 'bad taste' or 'disrespect'. Some think recasting the character is bad taste. Some think having the character die in universe is bad taste while others think simply mentioning that Chekov got promoted to the Reliant is 'bad taste'. I think people are interpreting 'bad taste' to mean 'Whatever is done with the character that I don't like.'

I think retiring the character until the JJVerse movies are finished would be the best idea. There's no need to recast since Chekov is a minor character. I'm sure Star Trek will be rebooted/remade/reimagined again at some point down the line and there will be a 3rd version of all the TOS characters.
