Writing In A New Chekov

Use technology to have him appear as if nothing happened. A computer version of Chekov for a few second a couple of times during the film.

I'm on the side of making a new character in this instance. The part was already re-cast once, doing it again wouldn't feel right plus it would give them the opportunity to explore new characters, like maybe this universe's version of Kevin Riley or even add a sorely needed female character.

Surely there's a minor female character from TOS that could be re-used?

If they don't go with a female character, they could bring in a new guy who's also named Chekov. This Chekov would be Pavel's younger brother. Four years younger to be exact. ;)

...Or it could be Pavel's younger SISTER as "Chekov". And now that I think about it, isn't there a case where parents name their kids the same name? I know that George Foreman named all of his sons "George"...

That's not a difference, it's an exception. None of the other actors "passed the torch." They were just recast. That's what happens with fictional characters. Ask Hamlet, or Romeo, Juliet, Beowulf, etc...
Have to disagree, considering all the interviews Nimoy himself had on wanting to retire from the role of "Spock", and given it to Quinto. And also, we're not talking about "high literature" (i.e. the works you mentioned are plays designed to have different actors playing the parts that are written) here, and there has been precedent in which a character has been "retired". Besides, I did say that in the next reboot, that would be the best way of recasting a new actor in the role of Chekov, IMO.

They also did that on Caprica but I don't see that as an option here.

A female Chekov would be interesting.

^ He could have had a brother in this timeline. Or as per my suggestion, the guy who would have been Pavel could have had an older brother who beat him to the punch.

I would rather this version of Star Trek to let Chekov go. Off exploring strange new worlds.
I agree.

It's a little too early to be talking about replacing Anton Yelchin at the moment. Personally, I think out of respect to Mr. Yelchin, they should just explain it as Chekov taking a promotion, and serving elsewhere, and leave it at that.

If they needed to fill the role, they should use a different character. With today's CGI, they could bring in a reimagined Arex.

I believe you are agreeing with me. I said that Nimoy was the only one to explicitly pass the torch. Everyone else was recast with no consultation to the previous actors.

George Foreman took a lot of blows to the head :ouch:, so maybe not a good example.

There's M'Ress. Ilia and Saavik would be too young.
Ilia would not be too young. She was about the same age as Chekov in TMP and Decker was early thirties, so about the same age as NuChekov. Since the timeline is over three years more advanced now, Ilia could definitely be a possibility. I'd quite like to see them both but Ilia's role as an expert navigator would give her an edge, plus the traits of her species are smutty enough to appeal to the schoolboy humour of NuTrek.

I don't think Saavik's age was ever established, and Vulcans do age more slowly, but it is heavily implied that she is decades younger than Spock. She does not have the air of someone who would be old enough to fit into this timeline. I think Alley was about 30 so if you scale that up to Vulcan years, she might be around as a very young ensign like NuChekov at the time of TMP.

^ He is a possibility with todays CGI. As to whether they actually want the character is another story.

She was iffy, I'll admit, but you're right. She could potentially work. Saavik however was in training in TWOK so I can't see her being on the Enterprise 15 - 20 years earlier. Again, you made some good points about her age but yeah, it seems like it was established that she was still young. Honestly, I'd rather see a story where she's taken in by Spock as a child.

Will Decker or Kevin Riley. Would be interesting to see if they could make Decker a better character this time around. Riley would be fun but a different kind of fun than Chekov is. I think it's a pity he wasn't used more.

To all those suggesting a CGI Yelchin: even if technologically possible, you can't use an actor's likeness without permission. In this case, they'd have to get it from Yelchin's estate, and while anything's possible I suspect it would not be given, as allowing a digital zombie to continue playing parts in his place could very well cause his image to suffer and might be seen as disrespectful by his family.

If these movies continue at all beyond the upcoming one (no pun intended), they will either recast the part (I don't see why anyone has a problem with this, it happens all the time) or write him out (I do like the "transferred to the Reliant" idea).

^ Not necessarily. What I was getting at was that Chekov Prime was born in 2245 and Abrams' Chekov was born 4 years earlier in 2241. He's the only member of the big 7 who's not exactly the same person. If nuChekov had a younger brother who was born 4 years later, he wouldn't be named Pavel but he'd be more analogous to Chekov Prime.
Cute!

We all know that nuChekov gives his specific age in ST09, but did TOS Chekov ever do the same? Was there ever any specific time frame put forth for his age or birthdate?
