Do people go to the holodecks to have sex

The problem I have with that argument is that we all know the Enterprise is often within Federation boundaries, despite its mandate to seek out New Life. There are civilised planets visited, numerous vessels of all types that are interacted with along the way ... random people are mixing with some kind of regularity, at least. Remember, the "D" is only difficult to get assigned to. It's relatively quite simple to leave. So, it's not like the government would feel compelled to provide a Sex Outlet on any of its vessels. The "flagship," especially.

As I've said, I would argue heavily against having this element in the show, but that's nothing to do with morality, or anything like that. Politicians have certainly never shied away from sexual exploits of every kind, just ask Anna Chapman, or Monica Lewinsky. But that's ... you know ... that's not the kind of light that government wants to be shown in. It's always so goody-goody ... so wholesome ... so above the common Man, so as to be in a position to dictate law to them. For this reason, the holodeck could never be officially designated as a Conjugal Visit Center.
Considering Roddenberry's TMP novelization lists "Love Instructor" as a legitimate career option in the 23rd century, I'm quite certain he'd be okay with the holodecks being sexual.

Holodeck sex: it's part of Gene's Vision!

There was probably one incident right after the holodeck was invented and then they immediately patched the holodeck software to clean up automatically.

The question of how mankind has evolved depends on which Trek you're looking at obviously, but even in TNG's Trek, mankind has evolved intellectually and culturally, not biologically. I doubt the holodeck replaces real companionship completely as people know it's not real and can't have the same feelings of emotional intimacy. What people do in their private alone time is not one of the parts of humanity that has evolved. People would do in the 24th century exactly what people in the 21st century would, given the same options.

Of course people have sex on the holodecks, although there are probably parental controls to keep Wesley away from the "Vulcan Love Slave" program.

Seriously, from what we see, the holodecks are often used for living out various fantasy role-playing scenarios: cowboys, secret agents, cowboys, Sherlock Holmes, etc. I'm sure some scenarios are more "adult" than others. ("Intended for Mature Crew Members Only.") In fact, you can probably adjust the settings for G-rated, R-Rated, X-Rated, and so on, depending on just how racy you want your latest Dixon Hill adventure to get. (And what's a good hard-boiled detective yarn without a sultry femme fatale or two?)

We're talking grown adults from a wide variety of cultures here. No reason there can't be some "adults-only" entertainment options. The Enterprise is not Disneyland; there's no reason why it would only feature "family-friendly" programming. :)

Nowhere in STAR TREK is there any indication that humans have "evolved" beyond their libidos--or even that they want to. If human beings still enjoy music and literature and theater, I'm sure they still enjoy various forms of erotica, too, both classy and otherwise. Nothing particularly "base" about that.

Despite my thorough and well-constructed arguments to the contrary, I see the pendulum swinging entirely in favour of Holographic sex. Nevertheless, my curiosity is now piqued: Clym, have you found your answer(s)?

Whilst I would doubt that there are any specific adult programmes stored in the ships databases it would not take a lot to create your own material. I am rather disturbed by the idea that you could conjure up an image of a crewmate and simply say, “Computer, freeze programme”, followed by the command, “computer remove clothes”.

I think it's been established that creating holo-doubles of real people and colleagues is considered bad form at the very least. Fictional Russian spies, rugged cowboys, or dangerous blondes, on the other hand, would just be part of the whole immersive, interactive experience. Holodecks are intended to help crew members blow off steam by indulging in various colorful fantasy scenarios. Why shouldn't those some of those fantasies have "adult" content if the crew member is so inclined. If you can ride a horse or punch a bad guy in a holo-fantasy, you should be able simulate sexual escapades as well. At least as far as the technology goes.

And, seriously, where is the holodeck supposed to draw a line if that kind of thing is indeed prohibited? If you're running a James Bond scenario and you're romancing a seductive double agent, does the holodeck "fade to black" just as things are getting a little too hot and heavy. How far are you allowed to go before the "decency override" kicks in?

That particular video is actually a bad example for this discussion. That wasn't really a holodeck program per se, but rather in that episode the Doctor added a "daydreaming subroutine" to his program. When the addition corrupted his program, the crew had to hook him up to the holodeck and play out his daydreams as he imagined them in order to find a solution. So there's not really anything inappropriate going on there, unless you're suggesting anyone who has imagined themselves spending time around a naked Jeri Ryan is a horrible person.

Of course, I suppose the facts should be considered that the Doctor has seen Seven naked (he removed her Borg implants and designed her catsuit) and so his imaginings of her are based partially on perfect memory. But then, I'm sure most doctors have at some point seen attractive people naked, or at least in an intimate state of undress and have proceeded to have fantasies about this. The Hippocratic Oath doesn't prevent you from thinking about your patients while you masturbate.

Sure, "peaking" is only done for professional reasons, but if they like what they see, it's not unprofessional or inappropriate to think about that again later, is it?

There's surely a "I'm a doctor, not a _____" joke lurking here, but I'm not sure I want to find it! :)

Yes, I have often wondered about this! If someone were to ejaculate into a Holodeck character, what happens to the bodily fluids after you say “computer end programme”?

"Computer...end program."

What a cold description for such a beautiful gift...

Clearly it is broken down into it's constituent molecules and energy to be recycled.

Still fancy that replicated cream cake?

Why not? It's no different from today. Every molecule in our food probably has been defecated (or otherwise secreted) a thousand times over by previous organisms in the past few billion years. The only difference being that on star trek ships the recycling cycle perhaps is somewhat shorter, and makes use of de- and rematerialisation, instead of just re-arranging atoms in molecules.

Sure, there would be a point. Holodeck dieting. ;) I would love to pig out on all kinds of cake and cookies and chips and junk, and just have it all disappear from my stomach after I ate it.
:guffaw: LAMFAO!! This was epic

Considering that this particular base instinct is a fundamentally integral component of the process by which human evolution occurs, most especially in a culture that has outlawed genetic engineering, I should hope not!

(I do realize you likely meant sociological rather than biological evolution, but the two are naturally interrelated. And one should be careful about conflating progression with repression.)
