Do people go to the holodecks to have sex

Of course people go to the holodeck to have sex. That's probably what inspired its invention in the first place! (Similiar to the real reason VHS won the format war over Beta: Porn.)
<respectful snip>

And here I thought it was due to size...

...oh, wait! That's funny!...

I agree it's frowned upon to simulate other people in the holodeck. I think the majority of people would be respectful enough not to. But fictional people with idealized bodies?

Tuvok was prepared to use the holodeck to satiate his pon farr. He resisted it but agreed in the end it was logically necessary. At worst holodeck sex with a fictitious person is considered something mildly embarrassing.

I wouldn't be surprised if there exist tutorial programs for people to train on and receive constructive feedback.

I think under the circumstances it would technically be called "porn Farr"

Indeed, you raise another very strong reason to avoid using HoloCharacters for sexual gratification And also, the U.S.S. Enterprise-D is a government vessel. I simply cannot imagine a sponsoring government like the Federation authorising its holofacilities to encourage and engage - directly - in sexual encounters with its holocharacters. What I can see being sanctioned are romantic, or even fetishistic settings - both indoors and outdoors. Like certain Honeymoon Suites you'll find at expensive hotels, around the world, sometimes. Simulations of tropical islands like Hawaii, and so-forth. The understanding, of course, is that yes, Starfleet personal are going to have sex with eachother in these environs, most likely. But for the Federation to act as a sort of Institutional Pimp, that's extremely hard for me to accept and if I were a producer of the show, I would fight very hard against that.

That still doesn't make Rom's cleanup task the next morning any less unpleasant.

Yes, I have often wondered about this! If someone were to ejaculate into a Holodeck character, what happens to the bodily fluids after you say “computer end programme”?

Honestly... This is teh one thing that bothers me about Holodeck.

Yes... you could absolutely use it for that purpose and quite honestly, humans, being the way they really are, it would annihilate society, I mean you wouldn't even need to talk about sex for the holodeck to have that affect.

Anyway, it's all fiction, but the holodeck would be a society crushing invention, people would completely lose themselves in there.

But, they've evolved, so does that mean their need to fill every base impulse has evolved as well?
Considering that this particular base instinct is a fundamentally integral component of the process by which human evolution occurs, most especially in a culture that has outlawed genetic engineering, I should hope not!

(I do realize you likely meant sociological rather than biological evolution, but the two are naturally interrelated. And one should be careful about conflating progression with repression.)

It is more of a sociological question, as would be explored with any technological advancement.

I don't think it's a matter of repression but it begs the question of expression. If using the holodeck for more sexual activities is the norm (compared with pornography in this thread, which is a fair enough comparison) then what are the new sociological rules? It was pointed out by TheWormhole that there were examples of people using other person's likeness in programs with little comment.

So, no, repression is not my consideration. I am wondering about expression.

It's the Utopian far future, All the Sociologists would have long since been used for Reactor Shielding, alongside the Pop Culture Critics and similar.

The holodeck is for porn.
The holodeck is for porn.
Why do you think the 'deck was born?
Porn porn porn.

Recall that in "The Big Goodbye," they couldn't just shut down the malfunctioning holodeck for fear that it might dematerialize the people inside. That possibility makes a lot more sense if one of the holodeck's normal functions is to "clean up"...

...you know, replicated material, stuff like that....

I give up. I am beginning to think the holodeck is magic. Maybe, somehow, the Federation scientists who came up with this thing accidentally hit on some old form of worship and the Old Ones are being invoked every time a holoprogram is activated, and powers to alter time and space are being keyed into that are way beyond what the technology explains. And it's all gathering power from human emotion-manna to free Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth and Azathoth and those guys. And the Borg will look like the cutest roly-poly hapless kittens, 8472 puppies. Yep, that's it.

Ia, Ia, Yog-sothoth upschar ftagn

----The holoNecronomicon and only the holoNecronomicon, accept no holo substitutes.

Hola!

If the Federation is smart enough, it understands that human is a sexual creature and the results of their efforts can be better if there's no sexual tension in the air. They're in space for long periods of time with a small group of people. I'd say it's a good thing if a holodeck could improve the performance of the crew by relieving "pressure".
The problem I have with that argument is that we all know the Enterprise is often within Federation boundaries, despite its mandate to seek out New Life. There are civilised planets visited, numerous vessels of all types that are interacted with along the way ... random people are mixing with some kind of regularity, at least. Remember, the "D" is only difficult to get assigned to. It's relatively quite simple to leave. So, it's not like the government would feel compelled to provide a Sex Outlet on any of its vessels. The "flagship," especially.

As I've said, I would argue heavily against having this element in the show, but that's nothing to do with morality, or anything like that. Politicians have certainly never shied away from sexual exploits of every kind, just ask Anna Chapman, or Monica Lewinsky. But that's ... you know ... that's not the kind of light that government wants to be shown in. It's always so goody-goody ... so wholesome ... so above the common Man, so as to be in a position to dictate law to them. For this reason, the holodeck could never be officially designated as a Conjugal Visit Center.
