do you think TOS should have been remastered?

Doug Drexler has expressed his disappointment that you can (or will soon be able to again) see the original 11 footer Enterprise in person, but you can no longer see it on television.

Really doesn't bother me. Stations and streaming services aren't going to pay double to have both sets. It would be a poor business decision on their parts. Honestly? How many people out there are just now watching TOS for the first time? I imagine the amount is minuscule.

Why do they have to "pay double" to have both, when even the public don't with the Bluray versions? which were the main way of making the projects money back.

The license should theoretically cover TOS itself, maybe a smaller additional charge per episode for the newer prints. But it's been that many years now that I don't see P/CBS charging extra now.

Why wouldn't a content provider pay extra? Why would they receive two one-hour slots of programming for one-hour?

They don't have to show both, some niche channels that show older shows could pay to show only the remaster, not the new FX version. Leaving other channels to show the newer version.

But either Paramount isn't releasing the original for broadcast anymore, or no one is showing interest. Either way it's a little odd.

I'm not sure how odd it is? Paramount and CBS got a ton of mileage out of a fifty-year old show. Maybe it is as simple as there isn't enough interest in the original version?

Maybe, but then we can always force the young'uns to watch the original and make them suffer through what we had to watch. :p

I don't recall suffering just as I don't recall suffering watching the original King Kong as well as '50's and '60's sci-fi on television.

My kids are okay watching stuff twenty years or so old. Fifty or sixty? That's another discussion. Society has changed so much in that time, I imagine that it is almost alien to them.

I've been out of the loop on Trek stuff for a while, I'm afraid, so my question may be a bit foolish - is there a Bluray release of TOS without the new special effects?

Yes. AFAIK, the TOS-R are the only versions being broadcast. And Netflix only has the TOS-R versions. So you really only have a choice when you buy the series on Blu-Ray. I'm sure that the more casual fanbase doesn't notice or care.

So the thinking is, when Blu-Ray discs are eventually phased out, nobody new will ever see the original versions again. That's unfortunate, but like you said, most people young enough to miss out would not appreciate the old fx anyway.

Not really what I was saying. What I was saying was that you can't see the original, unaltered version of TOS unless you make a special effort to and buy it on either BluRay or DVD.

And I didn't say anything about the age of the audience.

Maybe that is another attempt at making the Blurays more attractive to purchase for those that want the original you MUST buy them. You could possibly say the TOS-R being broadcast is an alternate version, so you can watch the alternate or BUY the original.

I was talking to my oldest (who is 19) about a similar subject last night the remastered original Halo: Combat Evolved (a game he has played forever). They remastered the graphics, but he still plays with the original graphics. Said it just doesn't feel right when playing with the new effects.

I tended to agree. The original graphics weren't as technically advanced, but they were cleaner and matched the feel of the game better.

It's fine for archival purposes for the originals to exist somewhere, that's how I saw them in the 70s and 80s. The reason why they are not shown anymore (duh) is because TV is now 1080p HD and that's why the remastered versions were produced in the first place. The CGI is good enough to withstand scrutiny at the resolution while the originals no longer fit the format.

Again proving my point. It's not that they are actually better, you and your son are both used to the originals.
That's all.

Maybe with some networks, but Paramount still considers it their primary IP and will update it as the showcase for each new generation. I'm still confident the 4K release will just mimic the two version release of this generation of media.

If they put it out as download/broadcast only, they can cut out the cost of physical media to help fund it. The film elements would have already been scanned in at 4K, so cleaning and processing should be the only thing to do.

Actually, this time it might be faster and easier than the 1080 upgrade, so no real excuses not to do it.
