Doug Drexler has expressed his disappointment that you can (or will soon be able to again) see the original 11 footer Enterprise in person, but you can no longer see it on television.
The license should theoretically cover TOS itself, maybe a smaller additional charge per episode for the newer prints. But it's been that many years now that I don't see P/CBS charging extra now.
But either Paramount isn't releasing the original for broadcast anymore, or no one is showing interest. Either way it's a little odd.
I don't recall suffering just as I don't recall suffering watching the original King Kong as well as '50's and '60's sci-fi on television.
The Blu-rays offer both versions.I've been out of the loop on Trek stuff for a while, I'm afraid, so my question may be a bit foolish - is there a Bluray release of TOS without the new special effects?
Yes. AFAIK, the TOS-R are the only versions being broadcast. And Netflix only has the TOS-R versions. So you really only have a choice when you buy the series on Blu-Ray. I'm sure that the more casual fanbase doesn't notice or care.
Not really what I was saying. What I was saying was that you can't see the original, unaltered version of TOS unless you make a special effort to and buy it on either BluRay or DVD.So the thinking is, when Blu-Ray discs are eventually phased out, nobody new will ever see the original versions again. That's unfortunate, but like you said, most people young enough to miss out would not appreciate the old fx anyway.
I was talking to my oldest (who is 19) about a similar subject last night the remastered original Halo: Combat Evolved (a game he has played forever). They remastered the graphics, but he still plays with the original graphics. Said it just doesn't feel right when playing with the new effects.
I tended to agree. The original graphics weren't as technically advanced, but they were cleaner and matched the feel of the game better.
It's not that they are actually better, you and your son are both used to the originals.
That's all.
So the thinking is, when Blu-Ray discs are eventually phased out, nobody new will ever see the original versions again.
