Castle season 8 discussion thread - spoilers

Thank god! Hopefully the show will get a sweet ending, though to be honest it's still gonna feel quite tainted by what's gone on. The show should have gone out on a high with the wedding actually happening when it was supposed to.

Hope the finale was written such that it will be a decent ending, and not a more open-ended spinoff idea that's not happening. Deserve at least a decent wrapup

Apparently there were two endings filmed for the season in case of cancellation.

I read that too.

This whole thing has been bizarre, which I suppose fits the last couple of seasons.

I'll miss the old Castle, though. It was a good show.

It was fun, if overly silly. But yeah, it'll be missed, even if missed more from a couple years ago than what it was degrading into.

Glad to hear they spent the time filming the series finale ending as well as the spinoff version; would suck to have them bust it up to accommodate a spinoff that wasn't happening while passing on the more fitting finale it deserved. Although probably most of the episode is the same minus a few minutes at the end, so it won't have the same feel, I'd imagine, as if they knew it was dead going into it.

Unless the spinoff was going to really break up the old version of the series anyway, in which case it would be easier to fix I guess. Either way, happier to see it end this way than to limp through a Scrubs: Med School aborted concept.

The problem was the first show runner dragged the wedding out too long, then the lame car crash, then he ditched.

After that there was no show runner who knew what to do. I would have had him going missing be linked to his dad, then in season 7 during November sweeps end that storyline and move on to something new. Everyone was afraid to get past Beckett and her mom even though that closed up. They needed to make a new focus, how marriage life affects their work, maybe still have Castle go be a PI because he can't work with Beckett anymore. Anything.... anything but what they ended up doing.

At least with Stargate SG1 they tried to move on and continue growing the show. I don't really like seasons 9-10 but at least they moved on. Castle never did.

Believe it or not, Sleepy Hollow got renewed... if you want to see what a Castle show without Beckett could look like. :p

Just popping in for a final comment.. i bailed sometime in season 6 i think and haven't looked back much. As many i noticed a steady decline in quality after they married so even being one of the most diehard fans during the height of the show (even annoyed my friends with it) i'm sad to hear the show went down the drain so hard.

Well.. at least one could rewatch stellar 4 and half seasons (my personal cut off was once the honeyphase was ending after they got together) and i'll glady rewatch episodes from time to time. Might even catch the final episode for old time's sake. Networks being Networks have once again ran a brilliant show into the ground for profit reasons but then again it's a bit unfair to put the blame on them.. it's the nature of the deal that networks need to make profits to produce shows (or in rare case there are ulterior motives to keep an unprofitable show). For Fans it hurts seeing a beloved show ruined for money's sake and the list is endless.

The writing was on the wall that something was not right at the core when the show creator left and took all the good writing staff with him.. i think it was him seeing the writing in the wall that the show has run into serious problems either by studio meddling or changing attitudes within the cast and he was unable/not allowed to fix it so he made the hard call and left his show. Form what i read at various places the show then really went into a nosedive and never recovered and bad mouths would say that Fillion just dragged it out now for the paycheck while Katic tried to retain a last piece of artistic integrity and may have been played a bit not to ruin the show for others by leaving it before season 8 started but reading between the lines her heart didn't seem to be in it anymore.

So farewell.. it was once an awesome show and my personal number one for a time (had my mother visiting me during the time the season 4 finale was airing and i actually "threatened" her if she disrupted me during the season 4 finale because she has a tendency to just barge in and start talking about nonimportant stuff at the worst possible moment ). So remember the good times and forget the crap. See ya! :techman:

I'm glad it's not coming back; It was a good 5 season run...

Yep. Six season one for me.

Very, very well put. I gave up in s7.

So much went wrong with it. When the showrunner left, it started to seem as if the writing was on the wall.

I also gave up during S7. That Gates would let Castle work cases again when they still had no adequate explanation of where he'd been for two months was too much for my suspension of disbelief, and that's saying a lot for Castle.

I had already begun to tire of the show somewhere in S4 or S5 (probably 5) when they switched Castle from someone who espouses crazy theories because he knows it irritates the shit out of Beckett, to someone who actually believes all that stuff. But the chemistry between Fillion and Katic was still good then, so I put up with it. After the change in showrunners, though, they lost me. The story was gone, and so was the chemistry.

I actually gave up early in season 6, after Beckett got fired from her job in Washington. I kinda rolled my eyes and knew that Beckett would probably spend the next episode or two out of a job, but soon enough she'd be back with the NYPD and leading the same task force with Ryan and Esposito and Castle tagging along, and we'd be right back to the same old formula. I knew she couldn't stay in Washington forever, because shows like these rely on their basic formula, but I guess that was just the point where I realized it was starting to get tired.

You bring up a good point Skywalker. No matter what people think about how stupid or silly or over the top House MD became they were still willing to shake up the whole cast because they realized the most important part was House.

Castle is/was Castle and Beckett with side characters that were fun. I don't care if the actors are fighting, they get paid to act, have them make it look like they like each other!

Very good point. I was wondering about why they had him disappear. And looking back on it, I'm betting it's the whole not spending time with Stana thing. It's sad to be honest. But oh well.

Yep. It was good through s7 in my opinion, and then it went bust. It was very strange.

Word.

I gave up on House once it got to be too much as well. When he and Cuddy broke up and things went sour, I just went and watched something else. It wasn't worth watching that train wreck any longer. Same with CSI, when they were being patronizing towards Gil/Sara shippers during an episode. That was the last straw for me.

Exactly. It happened on the X Files, but at least David and Gillian (for the most part) kept the bull off screen and the characters still worked out ok. It's called being professional.

Maybe someday we'll know the full story of what went on behind the scenes and there are two sides to every story, but for now I'm on Stana's side in this whole thing. Nathan hasn't exactly covered himself in glory here.

I'm still on the fence about watching the finale. I bailed midway through S6...I don't know anything about the storylines they've been doing lately.

I agree with you on this. Neither side is innocent in that area in my opinion.
