Abrams: Star Trek Into Darkness Problems

But then why bother watching anything?
The point is suspension of disbelief. You may know intellectually that the hero is death-proof, but you buy into the jeopardy emotionally. Or you don't buy in, in which case it might be unsatisfying, but then that's the fault of the writers/directors/actors in the specific instance.

No, the point is this was a direct rip-off. We all play the "suspension of disbelief" game watching anything. Kirk was not going to stay dead, so as great as Pine's performance was (and I think he was awesome) the perjury ruined it.

I was like: "They really do this?"

I remember watching this in the theater. I looked up at the ceiling and saw a good number of other fans around my age doing the same... I was almost embarrassed to be there - I DID cringe. But hey, the "new" fans think Spock loosing control and screaming like an idiot, running down the bad guy and beating him to an inch of his death is in character.... so glad they've been brought in and understand trek now.

It was a moment so brief that I moved past it and in to the next scene.

For me, the emotion of Kirk's death kept me there. Spock's reaction was interesting to, and I don't have a problem with it.

My larger issue was the fact that Khan didn't need to be Khan. But, beyond that, I love the emotions and changes to the characters and watching them go through these struggles and seeing what they will become.

I'm not a "new fan" and no no problem with Spock's reaction.

I've been watching Trek since 1966. Spock's behavior in the new movies is purely vintage, TV-era Spock.

Good for you. Not sure what trek you've been watching, but whatever trips your trigger.

When Spock screamed Khan, it was a cringing moment.
My thoughts on that scene were 'why on earth did they go there'? IMO they did not pull it off.
Actually I decided this Star Trek was a comedy from the moment CumberKhan said 'My name is Khan'.

1. Yanks, that's a couple of times in the last couple of days you've taken a none-too-subtle swipe at fans whose opinions differ from yours. Knock that off, please - we're here to talk about the movies, not to criticize and psychoanalyze the fans.
2. The supposed "Old Fans/New Fans" divide has been shown again and again not to exist, so far as the Abrams films are concerned, so why don't you just drop that, as well?

Not judging others opinions at all. I very clearly state I'm sorry this is their exposure to Spock. Read my posts. I've judged the movie, not fans. I've repeatedly told folks that I'm glad they enjoyed it.

It's never been shown anywhere quantitatively what you state. That may be your opinion, and that's fine, but dont silence me because you disagree with me.

NuSpock isn't vintage Spock, he's nuSpock. He's a Spock that's sassing it with Uhura, he's a Spock that was Kirk's superior for a time, he's a Spock that had his planet along with his dad blown up like an overflated beach ball. And I get the point that Spock was caught grinnin' and whatnot in early Trek and there's a bit of an outburst in Amok Time and all that stuff. But nuSpock is a different kettle of fish, he's a guy that's been traumatised and a character that was deliberately taken in a more human direction. But the thing is I know about the humans, I'd rather keep that Vulcan uniqueness. Spock bawling Kahn over Kirk,I burst out laughing. It was such a rip-off and had zero suspense at what was supposed to be a critical moment. It deflated the film completely.

Was there any point to this post, apart from being snarky?

Oh yeah, and there's been nothing sarcastic or judgmental about that.
