DC Comics - Ongoing Discussion - SPOILERS

Darker than Batman getting his back broken and replaced by a guy who went nuts and killed people, darker than Green Lantern went insane and killed the entire Green Lantern Corps, Darker than Wonder Woman snapping a guy's neck, darker than members of the Justice League mind wiping and brainwashing villains, darker than golden age Superman aka the guy from which all superheroes are inspired by deciding the wipe out the entire universe and thus basically kill everyone in DC existence becuase he didn't like how the universe turned out so he wants to start over, and ect.

What, you thought the pre Flashpoint universe was all sun shine and rainbows?

I mentioned before that DC getting darker started before the reboot, but where before the reboot there were dark events in an overall optimistic universe (since you apparently need to use examples spread over twenty years), the reboot made the universe itself a darker place. From Didio deciding that heroes should not have happy private lives, to Amazons being turned into evil man-raping murderers, Wonder Woman killing on a regular basis, a general mistrust from the public towards superheroes ... And, of course, in the color palatte. DC's used darker colors overall than before the reboot (remember, in general, so Superman's costume now being a darker blue than before is not the deciding factor).

And this is my last post on that topic. After almost five years, I'm tired of arguing points which are so obvious to so many people, especially in discussions that don't lead anywhere. You are apparently have an opinion that you're pretty set on, and anyone with a different point of view must be proven wrong or talked down to with a sarcastic remark, and my time is too precious to waste in ultimately moot discussions like this. I'm sure you're gonna ratiotanlize this to yourself by claiming that I don't want my own ideas challenged, or that what's the point of an "ongoing discussion" if you don't discuss things, but I don't care. All that's important is, they're gonna do "Rebirth", it looks promising to me, I'm gonna give it a shot.

Solicitations for June are out, and with it some more details. Pre-Flashpoint Superman will be starring not only in "Action Comics", but "Superman" as well, so he really is the main Superman again. And Green Arrow won't just be sporting the goatee again and meet Black Canary "for the first time", the new writer Benjamin Percy said: "Green Arrow will be a politically and culturally relevant series. Expect stories that aim a broadhead into the zeitgeist, that are ripped from the headlines." That certainly sounds like the GA I wanna read, Ollie becoming the bleeding heart liberal again.

CBR| DC Comics' Rebirth Arrives in June 2016 Solicitations

If the old characters are coming back.... Shouldn't this branding be called second life, or anything else that means reincarnation?

The new movie reminded me that for all the jabber about DC's "optimism" the whole "dark and gritty" turn in superhero comics was much more of a DC-born phenomenon than Marvel. Snyder has become Warner's preferred interpreter of the work of Miller and Moore, so of course the DC movies are going to exemplify that.

While I'm glad that Superman going forward will be the post-Crisis/pre-Flashpoint version, his history might be a little convoluted. Like X-Men -- Rachel Summers or Nate Grey -- convoluted. Mind you, I'm fine with this. The Byrne/Ordway/Jurgens Superman is my Superman. But explaining to a non-comics fan Superman's post-Rebirth origin and history could get weird. :)

It seems as if the Superman story will result in some kind of sacrifice on the part of one of the Supermen or perhaps a joining of the two versions. I can't see keeping two Supermen around in the same universe like that--even though it seems to be the plan for Spider-Man over at Marvel.

Well, the Rebirth hype has said (from what I remember) that a hero will die. I'm assuming that will be New 52 Superman, and the pre-Flashpoint Superman will step up to take his place in the public eye as Superman (instead of fighting crime from the shadows like he's been doing so far).

So Lois and Clark is actually "in" the current continuity?

Yeah, after the Convergence event the Superman and Lois of the pre-Flashpoint universe ended up in the New 52 Universe (although several years in the past, they were around when the Justice League of the New 52 formed, etc). Lois was pregnant then, so now its the "present" of the New 52 universe, Clark and Lois's kid is about 5, Lois writes small unimpressive news articles for a local paper while having an alter ego of "Writer X" (or something like that" who exposes big crimes. Superman has been fighting crime in this universe, but keeping under the radar. He has a fortress of solitude that he made and even keeps some especially nasty alien criminals locked up.

I'm delighted they're bringing back "my" Superman, but I'm so incredibly surprised they're doing it.

The comic higher ups always talk about how marriage and children are death for a successful superhero franchise... but here they are making Supes married with children!

I like the idea of New-52-Supe nobly sacrificing himself to save the day, and Old-Supe coming out of retirement to carry on in his name.

And probably getting treated like a replacement scrappy by Batman and Wonder Woman, since its going to probably come off as him trying to creepily replace their dead friend.

Actually there are going to be two Supermans (Supermen?). There's also a new character who most of the articles are referring to as Super-Man.
DC and Random House are going to be teaming up for a series of YA prose novels focused on Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Catwoman.
The books are:
Wonder Woman by Leigh Bardugo in August 2017
Batman by Marie Lu
Superman by Matt de la Pena
Catwoman by Sarah J. Maas
Comic Book Resources said:
According to Random House Books For Young Readers, the novels "will embrace themes of good vs. evil, coming-of-age romance, and superheroes from unexpected places who have the determination to achieve seemingly impossible dreams."

This came out yesterday so I assume it's not a prank:

Old Superman and New Superman will co-habitate in the new titles.

Uh, ... where in the linked article do you take that from? Because I read something about "classic pre-Flashpoint Superman taking over in Action Comics", and "mysterious Clark Kent" appearing, but nothing about the New52-Superman being there. Granted, it could turn out that this different Clark Kent they are making a fuzz over is the New52-Superman, but that's just speculation at this point.

What Kai said -- at this point, it's too early to say for certain, with the information that we have, that the pre-Flashpoint and post-New52 Supermen will coexist.

I'm intrigued by Lex Luthor's Steel-esque armor. I've kinda liked the post-Forever Evil Iron Man-esque Lex Luthor.

It's right there in the article :-)

But even if he isn’t the writer to hit that mark, Jurgens is bringing big ideas with him to his return to Action Comics. For starters, in his story, the two Supermen will co-exist -- the formerly primary Superman from "New 52" and the pre-Flashpoint Man of Steel who has been living incognito up until now in Superman: Lois & Clark.

You mean this?!

Okay, sure, I have to be honest and say this kinda didn't register the first time I read the article. But, even then, the following paragraph reads:

“Obviously we know from very recent DC history that Lois Lane revealed that Clark Kent and Superman are the same person to the entire world,” Jurgens explained at WonderCon 2016, referring to the recent "Truth" storyline. “When the Superman we’ve been seeing in Lois and Clark comes to Metropolis, they’ve been living here, in secret, from the pre-Flashpoint Universe, and that can’t possibly work for them.”

So, in context, it reads more like the history of the New 52-Superman will still be canon, but I have yet, in all the synopses of upcoming titles, in all the statements made at WonderCon, to come across of any mention of the New 52-Superman as an acting character beyond the "Rebirth" One-Shot.
