Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

You can always decide not to click the thing.

But sooner or later, any new software will only work with Windows 10 and not with any previous version.

Well, Windows 10 is not likely to lose your data, and it should all transfer over fairly smoothly. I imagine the real issue is keeping it from doing so without your permission and oversight.

Yep. And that's not something I like. 7 at least let me have choice over what I want on my laptop. 10 seems to be trying to take it away.

Honestly, with the way Microsoft is pushing Windows 10, I'd be surprised if anyone who owns Windows 7 or 8.1 will still have that OS by 2020 (Windows 7's End of Life support date). They're doing it by hook or by crook. Plus, what people with Windows 7 and 8.1 need to keep in mind is that even if Microsoft doesn't have you on Windows 10, they'll still be getting Windows 10 data with the patches that will and have been pushed through Windows 7 and 8.1's updates.

There are people who are showing others how to keep that from happening, but there will come a point when an update will be critical/required, and inside that patch will be all they need.

Yep. And that is another thing I'm not too enthralled about. If they made it so we'd have control over what we can have on our computers, that would be one less thing to be concerned about. I'm not enthralled over how it updates either.

Some of my favorite games won't even work with Windows 7, let alone 8.1, so it's a safe bet they won't work with 10.

I disabled automatic updates on both my current computers, one of which is an XP that is intended to be for older games and writing. Just today I installed Civilization II: Test of Time, which is ideally for Windows 95/98, but works fine with XP. That's my favorite game, and there is no way I'm in favor of Windows 10 messing it up.

I don't know now having used it since late August I have grown to like it and changed my mind about it. I don't think I could ever go back to Windows 7.

I'm managed to get most of the games I like running on Win7 (Win10 has it's issues with some of them). There are other programmes that don't stand a chance of much past Win98 that we still have on one of the drives.

My old laptop has hardware that won't work with Windows 10 (currently on 7) - but that hasn't stopped Windows 10 from wanting to be installed:( . I've just had to switch off autoupdate on my 7 machines for the time being.

That must be some seriously old hardware! My PC is about 8 years old, and it runs Windows 10 like a champ. It does suck, though, about the whole compatibility issue. I have a few games that I got working on Windows 7 that Windows 10 just laughs at and says no.

The old laptop is a 1.6ghz (it is dual core if I remember correctly) but the big problems with it are the graphics card (no up to date drivers on it) and the tv tuner card. One of our printers and scanners also have issues.

Hell, one of our desktops (currently in the loft for space reasons) still runs Win3.11 on a 486 DX2-66 Processor. I just tend to use dosbox more nowadays for the stuff I'd have run on that.

John Clark, I so glad you are still using older machines. I figure, if it works and meets your needs, why not? I have a TV I bought in 1993 that I still use. :D It would be really nice if new software was backward compatible.

Hey does anyone know of a way to capture the POST screen as the PC is booting up?

BTW I think I mentioned this but my old 2010 laptop which was a 1.8ghz dual core celeron still runs as slow as treacle on Windows 10. I tried it again doing a totally clean install and it just isn't fast to boot at all. Put Windows 7 back on that puppy and installed a tool to disable windows 10 notifications.

That tool is called the "GWX Control Panel." It's a small piece of software that will halt any notifications to upgrade.

Is there a way to turn off Smartscreen Filter?

It wouldn't let me install drivers for my wireless adapter. I had to install that via a command prompt.

Googling this there it seems to do this to a few installer programs even from brand name devices. Mine was a Dlink.
