Rey in The Force Awakens (Possible Spoilers)

Well, we're all missing the biggest Mary Sue. After all, Finn is a stormtrooper and yet was shown to hit multiple things he was aiming at throughout the movie.

The film really does go out of its way to set the expectation that Rey is Anakin's granddaughter. She's an excellent pilot. She's good at fixing things (always has been :p). Is called by Luke's and Anakin's lightsaber. And is very talented with the Force.

I fully agree and have said as much a fair few times.

Her "perfect" flying skills were so terrible that she should be happy Han never saw what she did with the Falcon. He was going to rip off Lando's head for the tiniest scratch and Rey surely caused some.

It made me think of ROTJ immediately. :D

Like I said: A fun mix of skill, the force, crazy ideas and pure luck. :p

Rey's Force abilities came very quickly, but that seems to be part of the film's pacing issue overall more than a character issue.

As far as her being a Mary Sue, I guess I can see it, but it's consistent with the Star Wars saga all. Luke had many of the same issues in ANH. With Star Wars, if the film doesn't draw you into the universe then I think a lot of these flaws stick out and irk, but if you're drawn into the universe then it doesn't matter and you're willing to go with it. I mean, Luke destroying the Death Star because he used to shoot womp rats is a little weak; since I loved the film, I totally went with it, though, and was very invested, while my dad, who doesn't get Star Wars at all, was like "That's fucking stupid."

Edit: Rey did seem super angry at during the duel and I was wondering if that's a set up for an arc about her journey with the Force down the line. I hope so.

Rey is awesome because she can really fly anything.

So did the other stormtroopers. It seems the First Order values marksmanship more than the Empire did.

I don't think the womprats was why he was able to fire his torpedoes at the right moment. Obi-Wan was talking to him. Telling to trust his feelings. He said the same thing when Luke was practicing against the remote. The force, what little he could feel told him the time to fire. How the torpedoes work and figure out where to go I don't know. Don't need to. I always took it as the force telling Luke when to fire.

Han's got no room to talk he's the one who crashed the ship in the movie.

Good point.
A friend of mine asked how they even got out of the Falcon considering they surely couldn't open the ramp after that "landing". :D

Exactly.

He should have been a pro exiting hyperspace and preventing a nosedive.

That's true! I was more thinking of the fact that he was able to survive up until that point when all the other, more experienced pilots had died.

Well as saw in TESB there's an upper hatch, I was wondering about that belly gun though it's doubtful it survived the crash.

I don't think he's a Mary Sue/Gary Stu. I was checking his Wookieepedia page and it does note that he was an effective marksman for the First Order.

I mean he did learn how to use the cannons on the TIE fighter-after saying he didn't have any experience with them-pretty quickly. He also picked up on firing the Millennium Falcon's guns very quickly. But at the same time Finn has been a trained military soldier, since birth or very early on.

One of the things that annoyed me about the film was that we saw very little military bearing from Finn. He runs from Rey when he first meets her. And she takes him down.

Plus he has to get saved by Rey, got saved by Han Solo and while he does a better job than he should have against Kylo Ren (which is more a bad reflection on Ren IMO), but he still is beaten and put into a coma.

The character seemed to vacillate, due to storyline dictates. When they needed him to be pacifist he was, but when they needed him to kill he would. And when they needed him to run away, he did, and when they needed him to come back, he did that too. It was a yo-yo. Granted you could say he was experiencing a lot of tough, stressful emotional situations and turmoil and put in a pressure cooker, but still it was a lot of back and forth with him.

Yeah, I got that (although it's not what Mary Sue means, not that I think people actually use it properly anyway).
