Supernatural, season 11 *SPOILERS!*

The Darkness being God's sister implies that God has a mother and father. I wonder how mom and dad feel about what God did to his sister.

If you didn't see tonight's episode...why not?!?!

This was a TOP-NOTCH episode in every way. Mythology? Check. Great story for the brothers? Check. Great story for Cas? Check. Great story for Crowley? Check. New intel on the Darkness? Check.

Me finally (sort of) getting my wish from when the Reddit spoiler from Bob Singer was posted? DOUBLE CHECK.

Too bad it looks like next week's episode is a filler MotW episode, and not a particularly good one.

I don't know, the Lizzie Borden episode looked like a MotW installment but it ended up being a pretty big mythology story. Also, I enjoy any chance to revisit Sheriff Donna (pity it will be sans Jody Mills, though).

Agree on your assessment of this week's episode. The act that transistioned from Dean to Sam to Cas -- again and again -- was nicely executed. Curtis Armstrong delivered a strong performance as Metatron at his lowest ebb and his reveal about the Darkness was a satisfying development.

I have to add that I'm really liking Sam's arc this season. His efforts to not kill and instead focus on saving as many people as possible seem like a well-meaning response from the creative team to several of the criticisms directed at the show the last few years. Aiming for a higher morality through his actions makes Sam a much more compelling hero. Bonus: His ambiguous visions are always intriguing and suggest so many possibilties for the course of the show -- a welcome addition to the series this season.

Hopefully the writers can maintain this upswing in quality we've been experiencing since the "Baby" episode.

Definitely one of the strongest episodes in quite a while, all around. Wasn't expecting that plot twist, or the ending, but it's nice to get back to the season 4-5 mythology and expand on it.

And okay, that's a pretty damned good motivation for the villain to be angry. She said she's never seen creation, we know Lucifer and Michael watched as the first life crawled from the oceans and Castiel has made mention the universe is as old as science says.

Amara has been locked away for 14 billion years? And God only did it to create the abismally poorly made universe we live in and spent the remaining eons getting drunk and rambling to Metatron?

Seems to me God is being setup as the final big bad of the series.

Well, we know he has a son. If God has parents, he has to have grand-gods too, and maybe a brother, uncles, aunts, cousins.

Well, you know what they say, "Go big or go home!"

If you need a Big Baddie for your show, you're pretty much done shopping when you pick God.

After reading the hype, I was disappointed by this episode. As I predicted, there is a lack of drive when the plot moves away from Sam and Dean.

Cas - Why is he angsty? It seems kind of vague. Seeing how low Marv had fallen was interesting but he was basically an exposition-delivery device.

Amara - A sulky teen with an entitled attitude. Some of us watch this show to get away from that stuff! ;) She's not scary and not interesting. The only interesting thing about her was some exposition we heard from Marv.
What will she do now? She might assemble her own goon squad, or might team up with Rowena or Marv (Marv would be funnier and more interesting, given how well he knows the Big Guy).

Romena is still in play. Her Book of the Damned may have the answer as to what to do with Amara (will she end up in the Cage?).

Crowley - When he's not dangerous or outright pathetic, he's boring. This was the problem with Rowena and it's the same problem with Amara. He is exasperated and ineffectual and looks like a putz. My hopes momentarily rose when he threatened Dean, but that didn't last long. I also find the Asylum set extremely dull and not at all Hellish: much too overlit, too square and open, no sense of threat.

Dean - He is supposedly in thrall to Amara, and the expression for this is the same as when he's not sure where he left his keys. As the last few seasons should have demonstrated, personality transformations are not Ackles' strength. Padalecki gets less respect, but when you want someone possessed by a demon or angel, to be addicted to demon blood or lose his soul, he has to be the go-to guy. I assume Padalecki is being saved for the return of Lucifer.

Sam - The trying-not-to-kill thing is the one really new element of this series. My guess it's so when he is repossessed by Lucifer and kills a bunch of people, he feels especially guilty. Or it might just go nowhere.

I hate to say I told you so, but this was an incredibly weak filler episode. Literally the only parts of it that interested me were the first two minutes, and the last minute, which dealt with the mythology. Everything in between was...I'm not sure whether to say "silly" or "pointless," but whichever way you go it works.

Next show doesn't look much better. Sitting through these filler episodes is almost painful knowing how disconnected they are from the bigger story arc.

Very much a "filler" episode. Very, very average. But...it did give us another Donna appearance and that was enough to keep me happy.

And the bunny mask was creepy as hell.

It was great to see Donna again, but it's a shame that they didn't have a better episode for her. The masks were creepy and it was nice to see Sam's fear of clowns brought up again, but everything else was forgettable.

I think the episode should have gone more in a Direktion of bizarre comedy.

The roots were there, but the possessed masks alone didn't cut it.

But there have been worse episodes.

Yeah, it was an okay filler episode.

The idea of a vengeful ghost is pretty old by now. The twists were the child abuse angle, and the masks. This had potential, but unfortunately the execution was lacking. Go back to the early seasons, when every episode was styled like a short horror movie, with lots of atmosphere and scares (e.g. Hookman, The Benders).
Compared to that, this was just ... an episode of a TV show.

The scene of the sister delivering an exposition dump was the low point, just tedious.
Also, they missed a trick by not having multiple masks at once. It would have been great to see Sam and Dean chased down the street or beseiged in a house by a horde wearing animal masks.

So it wasn't terrible, but it was in no way special either. Must try harder!

I bought season 10 on DVD. It has some nice extras related to the anniversary.
Watching Paper Moon (the werewolf episode) again, it could have been a decent episode if not for the guest actor. I can't rate it more than 2/5. Fortunately it was followed by Fan Fiction. I have a bit of a problem watching the climax of this, because I'm trying to enjoy the music, and watch the stage action, and watch S&D versus the monster.

I have had "The road so far" stuck in my head since last night.

Call me jaded, but I am just not a fan of "filler" episodes, especially ones this...ridiculous. I'm sorry, but in a season with The Darkness and talk of Lucifer and The Cage, standalone MotW episodes are one step from insufferable. Especially when they're this goofy.

Next week, on the other hand, promises to be nothing short of epic. Skip tonight's entire episode, and just watch the promo for the midseason finale: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoRI8eKB6bY

I thought I was going to hate this episode but actually, I didn't. Yes, it was kinda dumb and maybe a bit too silly. It was a good laugh and had some nice looks back at Little Sammy. I think a good light-hearted story was needed since, well---HOLY CRAP, IT'S LUCIFER!! *Squee*

Yes, the next episode looks to be epic; clearly, some seriously bad shit is about to go down. I can't wait!

I thought it was a pretty fun episode but really wanted to see if Dean had an imaginary friend or at least a comment about why he didn't have one.
Ah Lucifer and the cage, its about time.

A couple of things I'm thinking about for next week and rest of the season:

  • No mention of Michael, just Lucifer. Surprised Jake Abel (Adam) didn't show up in the teaser. Wonder if he and/or Lucifer are going to get sprung, or if we're being tempted by previews of a new set of visions?
  • Considering how powerful Lucifer was shown to be last time--"in ways that defy description," according to Cas--I'm wondering if he'll still be able to zap around even though other angels obviously can't? For that matter, I wonder if Michael's wings are intact? (As in, did the Cage protect them from Metatron's spell?)
  • Will the threat of The Darkness be enough to make them finally track the scribe down and force him to reverse his handiwork? Or can Lucifer or Michael do it? Will God have to step in and do it? I imagine we'll need an army of fully-powered angels to fight Amara.
  • Thinking back to season 10's midseason finale here, I'm hoping whatever Amara is up to is more imposing than when Dean finally let loose with the Mark of Cain.

I absolutely adored that episode. It was an original concept that was both very funny and heartbreaking. Supernatural is on fire this season.
