Trek Returning to TV in 2017!

If this is a TNG reboot in the Abramsverse, the thing I want most is ample hints that there's a DS9 reboot forthcoming, too. :P

In this reboot, Morn actually speaks, but it's mostly about how Quark's liquor has rendered him sterile. Sad, really.

Sounds good to me.

I think a combination of stand-alone sci-fi short stories, with a longer arc woven in for modern TV viewers would be ideal. It's what JMS suggested in 2004, and it's kinda what Manny Coto did in ENT season 4. You could have sci-fi stories by authors, and mix in a reboot of TNG's really interesting dynamics with the Romulans, as a competing superpower with it's own espionage service. You could have DS9 and Voyager characters guest star - have a younger un-reformed Garak running around sabotaging things lol.

A new Enty D would be interesting to see too. Bring on Commander Sela as a recurring villain.

It opens up the doors for the Dominion to be an even bigger and more dangerous threat in the Abrams timeline than it already was in the Prime history. Or there could be a twist where the Dominion behaves more benevolently to infiltrate the Alpha Quadrant and attacks the Federation and other local powers from within.

Imagine the bombing attack in "Homefront (DS9)," only exponentially more widespread. The paranoia would be even more corrosive than it was in the Prime timeline.

Just quickly addressing the issue of it being PAY TV; you'd think that no-one had invented KODI, TVMC or Torrents or that you couldn't *borrow* a friends account details....seriously guys. Payment isn't really an issue now is it?

One thing I always wanted to see about the Dominion, which we never got to see in DS9, is how it has many many more members than just the Vorta and Jem'Hadar - we could see the original vision of an anti-Federation staffed with diverse crews come to life - perhaps they have the equivalent of Vulcans/Betazoids/Aenar, who act as a telepathic police, for example?

I would love to see life in the Dominion, perhaps from the perspective of a Starfleet infiltration team - see how planets really function in this society - Karemma trade worlds, etc.

Another thing we could see is a rebooted Borg that actually stick to the premise of "Q Who", still the best Borg story arguably.

And the Romulans and Klingons, as ever, remain a great possibility in this era.

We're getting a new series. The sehlat turd known as "TATV" did not air in vain.
In the pilot for Series 6, we'll find out that TATV never really happened. It was all on another holodeck, where an officer was trying to make a difficult decision, so he role-played in an inaccurate recreation of the Pegasus Incident. ;)

I am intrigued by your theory and wish to subscribe to your subspace holo-letter.

Well, this is happening, and that's good, but I don't feel really excited about it, and that's bad. I'm mildly curious, though, and that's good, but the curiosity contains potassium benzoate, ... and that's bad.

The streaming system doesn't bother me. If I like the premier and it makes me want to watch more, I'll subscribe. If it doesn't, I won't. Either way, by the next year it would be on Netflix and I'd watch it all then.

I don't think it's going to be a TNG reboot. But at the same time, it would surprise me if it was, especially if the higher-ups see TNG to TV as TOS is/was to film. I will say, though, that I will be very surprised if it doesn't have an Enterprise in it. And, to that end, TNG does seem like the most likely candidate. However, I think what they'll probably do is a TNG in spirit, but not a direct reboot. Maybe an Enterprise A show based on nuTrek. Can Cho head a TV series?

That about sums it up for me.

My reaction this morning was essentially a humble "Huh. Cool." and I moved on to what I was doing.

In comparison, the day I heard about Episode VII, I nearly died of an aneurism of awesome.

I'm excited. But for now CBS has a year to get its streaming service available on a wider variety of devices. I have a smart TV, smart Blu-Ray players, a PS3, and a PS4. I might entertain the possibility of paying $6 a month to watch a new Trek program but I won't buy another device to it nor will I subscribe to watch it on my tiny phone or on my bedroom PC.

Worse comes to worse. Torrents and media streaming it to my PS4.

Looks easy to access

Only if you're a U.S. citizen.

But if you're not in the US it will be available on TV, as has already been stated, so no problem.

So let me review the situation for a moment to make sure I got everything right. As of this moment, we know pretty much nothing about this show except Alex Kurtzman is involved, and it's set to premiere on CBS's streaming service in 2017, and it will involve a new cast.

It will premiere on CBS. The subsequent episodes will be released on its streaming service.
Outside of the USA, CBS International will sell it to other channels/services. There'll be more details forthcoming as January 2017 draws closer.

Okay, so serious question, even though this will air on the CBS streaming service, it will eventually make its way to something like Netflix or even DVD/Blu-ray (if such things are still around in a couple years) right?

Yes. It would be very weird if not. Even Netflix releases its shows on physical media. There's additional money in doing so which CBS probably won't pass by.

Well Im excited at the moment, if you had asked me before the announcement yesterday I would have said I don't care what it is, I just want new Trek on TV.

I have preferences of course, the new films aren't the aesthetic I want but Im pretty sure I will enjoy it for what it is. Most importantly we need it to be successful, if it is then they will hopefully try other flavours of Trek that will keep other people happy.

Kurtzman has a decent record in TV as far as I can tell and its not like he will do it alone, there will be a team of writers. CBS wants it to do well, its keeping it streaming because they DO have faith in it, they are banking on it drawing people to their service.

Im a huge Star Wars fan too and though Ive been happy at new Star Wars films I wanted the same for my other TV love, Star Trek. I for one will be eagerly awaiting updates.

Though I am glad to hear there will be a new ST series, I'm not sure about spending $6 a month for a series.

CBS must not believe the series can survive on the broadcast network. Who knows, they may be right. But regardless, you will get the first episode free, you can decide if you want to support Trek with your money or not.

This may be the only way Trek gets made in the future, with more and more fragmention in the viewing marketplace. I have no issues with giving this model a try.

And I guessing that Paramount won't be launching Michael Gummelt's Star Trek Uncharted...
Unless CBS is taking some elements from it, with Kurtzman as the producer. The mystery angle is right up his alley.

I do like the overall premise.

In addition, the timing of the summer pitch meeting Michael Gummelt had with Paramount could be an indication. Gummelt said in his 8/26 blog update - "The producer I pitched to (a very high-placed producer at Paramount, they definitely gave me the right audience) listened carefully and took notes and has the pilot script."
Most likely Kurtzman

I could see a TNG era reboot, but most assuredly Picard and crew will be not be returning. If it's an Enterprise D show, which I highly doubt, it would probably be an all new crew. If it's roughly the same era but in the Abrams timeline, they may bring some of the TNG cast for cameos, but very unlikely.
Most likely it will be set "a few years after" ST:B.

Or perhaps this is the result of: http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=273873 ?
:D
