Series 9 - Coming September 19! (And a trailer!)

Keep him happy?

He's playing his dream role, isn't that reason enough to be happy?

It's a balance -- dream role versus more fulfilling, lucrative work. That's not a balance that's unique to him; many people have a dream job in mind but they work at something entirely different, in something that may be more remunerative or not entirely impossible.

It's been rumored that Capaldi didn't enjoy making series 8. Where Matt Smith or David Tennant might have been content to take what they were given, Capaldi has more clout and is likelier to voice his disain; he doesn't need Doctor Who. Some moves to make Capaldi more comfortable on set and with the production would make a lot of sense, if it meant keeping an actor of his caliber.

Well , if making Capaldi happy means letting the Doctor dress like some random guy staying in for the weekend, I say bring on Doctor #13, hopefully with an actor who appreciates the role

I'm a little surprised to read that. The role is bigger than anyone actor, after all. Capaldi does come to the role with more clout and respect than any actor with the possible exception of Eccleston. And I do enjoy him in the role. But I'm not sure that his Doctor is necessarily any more popular than Tennant or Smith and certainly no more replaceable.

Perhaps they simply don't want to have to start auditioning yet another actor so soon. I wonder will they be so indulgent in another couple of years.

I never even heard of Peter Capaldi before he was announced as Doctor. I mean, I didn't expect to since he's a pretty much UK exclusive actor and the only british shows I watch are Doctor Who and Sherlock, but is he that big? Looking at wikipedia, he doesn't seem any bigger than Tennant, and lesser known than Eccelston, but admittedly that's just based on international work, not UK based stuff.

This is the first time that I heard that he disliked the filming of series 8. I always heard that he just found it surprisingly taxing (probably the high tempo, running, etc. for a man of his age), and he wasn't expecting it to be so intense and it tired him out a little bit.

We're quibbling around words here but you probably could call that a dislikable experience. Just judging by the interviews I've seen recently he's enjoyed making this series more.

He's the sort of person that remembers what it was like back when he was a teenage watching Doctor Who and wants to make it easier for a fan (like he was) to play the Doctor. The original magician-like costume looked easy, but is actually expensive.

One thing Capaldi does bring is that he's a musician and an accomplished director. Those are skill to be used.

He's not a superstar but he was a well-respected jobbing actor with a cv goi back to Local Hero, a much loved British film from the early 1980s. His profile really rose with the part of Malcolm Tucker, a foul-mouthed borderline sociopathic spin doctor in The Thick of It, a role he reprised in the film In the Loop, where he held his own opposite the late James Gandalfini. He won numerous awards and a lot of acclaim for playing Malcolm and thus his being cast as the Doctor got a bit of attention from people who wouldn't normally be interested in it.

Well, basing the Doctor's attire on hoiw easy it is to cosplay might just be the stupidest reason for a costume ever. It also doesn't justify how horrible the costume is, especially in the context of the show and the character.

It isn't a stupid reason at all. Capaldi talked about his reason for picking that costume -- he wanted children to be able to dress up like the Doctor without great difficulty. Capaldi takes the Doctor's importance to children seriously.

I still think its stupid. At this point, they're not dressing as The Doctor. They're dressing like basically any random person on their day off. Capaldi putting on jeans does not mean kids wearing jeans are now dressed as The Doctor. He's an alien, he's not supposed to dress like he stole some of Rory's clothes he left in the tARDIS. The Doctor has gone 50 years without caring about whether kids can dress as him, so I don't consider that a valid reason for anything. Besides, it mostly seems like Capaldi is a bit of an ass, and just wanted to wear clothes that are easier to put on/more comfortable to lounge around in. Its stupid, and it gives me a very poor opinion of Capaldi. He's basically bullying the show into letting him wear whatever he had at the back of his closet, or at least the equivalent of that, regardless of the fact it goes against the character and, in my opinion, ruins The Doctor's credibility more than a rainbow coat or a munch of question marks ever could.

He's the first Doctor Who actor who seems like a gigantic a-hole. Even when I hated the 7th Doctor, I thought McCoy was a nice guy and a decent actor. Capaldi seems to have a huge ego and be a very self centered person, and the fact that the people making the show are basically letting him go wild sucks. Colin Baker wasn't allowed to say what he got to wear, and (as much as I love the coat) he had legitimate reasons to want different clothes. Capaldi sure as hell shouldn't be making those decisions. Its really soured me to the 12th Doctor, although I won't miss Series 9. I will be very happy when he regenerates, though. I hope its something stupid, like the 7th Doctor's medical malpractice death or the 6th Doctor's head banging into the TARDIS console.
