I had a 12 inch portable black and white TV in my bedroom when I was a kid. That thing was nearly as heavy as my current 4K 50" TV.
I also had a 12 inch Zenith with the rabbit ears. We had the larger 25 inch color family set hooked to the antenna with a rotor to turn the aerial. We got three Connecticut channels that way. Two of them had uncut Star Trek episodes. I first saw the episode previews on WTNH. Good times!
5 years old..Mom watched "One Step Beyond", "Twilight Zone" and "Outer Limits" so she allowed me to be with her while she watched "The Man Trap"..we saw it in glorious Color on our 26" RCA TV.. (Dad worked for the company, so he got the biggest set they made for free as a perk)

Ain't that the truth! Besides the couch, it was the biggest piece of furniture in the living room. Beautiful wood cabinet if I remember right. Next time I visit, I'm going to have to flip through a bunch of photo albums. Oh ya, I was the remote control. UHF and VHF dials.
I was both from time to time.
My parents, who watched shit like Lost in Space, for some reason, turned their nose up at Trek. I might have seen one or two when it first aired, but all I remember is my parents making fun of a friend of theirs who liked Trek.
So when Trek aired, they watched My Three Sons instead.
I didn't start watching it 'til 1971 when introduced to it (via the Blish books) by a friend in junior high. From then on, 5 PM was Trek time in my house.
I don't get it. The parents watched LIS, and other sci-fi-type shows, just not Trek.

I can still hear the sound of the channel change. Sort of a thunkish click. Ours was a dark blondish brownish, with that yellowish mesh. Wood trim was medium dark. UHF and VHF
I was 9 and a couple of months on this day, 49 years ago, and I have never looked back.

The Man Trap originally aired three years, eight months and nine days before I was born, so I missed that but have watched it on various September 8's going back to VHS days. I considered watching it two days ago, but didn't because I did a re-watch of the entire series that lasted from April to July.

I know the feeling. My folks used me as the remote control. Mom would actually call me into the living room and have me turn the dial on the set until she found something they wanted to watch. Sometimes I had to go through four (!) channels, not even counting the educational channel (not yet PBS).
(I'm not implying that they were lazy; in fact, they both worked pretty hard during the day, and certainly were entitled to relax in the evenings.)

My sister, who was visually impaired, was our remote. She sat an arm's length from the screen with one hand on the knob. She was also a pioneer in channel surfing watching five programs at once
And woe unto the "channel changer" who had the knob break as they were turning it! The punishment might not have been as severe if one were dutifully following directions. But one had decided to get "cute" and "spin" the dial and it snapped... Out came "the belt"!!!

Yes! That happened to us, too. That damned Zenith was pretty battered by the time it hit the local landfill.
I had that selfsame problem and outcome, Redfern.
