Special guest announced for Christmas (spoilers)

Thanks, though I have to correct you a bit.
She most definitely grew up with Amy and Rory or did you forget her Mels incarnation?
Just not as her daughter but as her rebellious best friend.

Fair enough, that plays more to Allyn's hand than mine. She'd already seen the toys then. Although I still think the Pond / River connection is too close to be a coincidence. He had to at least have been thinking in that direction to have decided on that name.

.
I think I explained in the post above you. Did you not notice?

Both can be right (in a way). Every script for a series is written before they start shooting the series. When he came up with the mother-daughter connection, before filming, he could have changed the "new companion's" name to Pond.

Usually the only script not written is the Christmas special, with the exception of The Snowmen.

Looking forward to seeing her again. Will bring back memories of new who's golden age!

I remember when Karen Gillan was cast and the character's name was announced as Amy Pond, people were complaining that Doctor Who was getting too many characters named after water bodies. At the time (summer 2009) we already had two other characters so named within the previous year (River Song and Jackson Lake). So Amy Pond was just the latest in that trend. If anything I think it's the fact that the two characters were named Pond and River that made Moffat want to make them related, it certainly wasn't planned that way from the start. Moffat really doesn't plan things out in detail, contrary to what many fans believe.

We really don't know how much advance planning Moffat does. Anything here is speculation. But by reading RTDs book, the fifth season was probably written before the "Amy Pond" announcement was made. That just seems to be how British television shows work, whole series (seasons for us folk) written before starting to film and sometimes even cast. With Who, it's mainly because they film in blocks, not episodes, so they need to have the series written to plan out the blocks.

River Song quickly became smug and tiresome for me and she was one of Moffat's pet characters.

Me too. The smugness is what made her the most irritating to me. But like I said...it depends on which River shows up at Christmas. There are times when the character is insufferable and times when she's interesting. I'm hoping for the latter.

Has anyone tried to see where her smuggness levels fit into her timeline?
Possibly it is intentional with her wising up in her later years.

No, I thought she was OK in the Library two parter, which was technically at the end of her life. But the more screen time she got the worse she got.

Personally I enjoy this from the end:
The witty line-up of guest cast joining Alex for a magical adventure on the TARDIS will be announced over the coming months.

What's a witty line-up?

Matt Lucas and Greg Davies are in it too; so it looks like it's going to be more of a comedy episode.

Maybe it's a timey-wimey thing and she meets up with him before she knows him. Kind of like in series 4 when he didn't know her.

Didn't River mention the Doctor gave him the 9/10's sonic during their last meeting together? Couldn't this be that last time before the Library?

That was already covered in a Mini-episode "Last Night"

http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Last_Night_(TV_story)

The two Doctors share a brief, sad moment, knowing that this is the spot the Doctor took her just before her ill-fated expedition to the Library. The younger Doctor reverently wishes his earlier self good luck on his final date. The older Doctor wistfully looks back at the past version of himself and wishes him the same.

It's implied it's their last night but not stated. Plenty of wiggle room. I think Moffat said so himself.
