Both can be right (in a way). Every script for a series is written before they start shooting the series. When he came up with the mother-daughter connection, before filming, he could have changed the "new companion's" name to Pond.

I remember when Karen Gillan was cast and the character's name was announced as Amy Pond, people were complaining that Doctor Who was getting too many characters named after water bodies. At the time (summer 2009) we already had two other characters so named within the previous year (River Song and Jackson Lake). So Amy Pond was just the latest in that trend. If anything I think it's the fact that the two characters were named Pond and River that made Moffat want to make them related, it certainly wasn't planned that way from the start. Moffat really doesn't plan things out in detail, contrary to what many fans believe.
We really don't know how much advance planning Moffat does. Anything here is speculation. But by reading RTDs book, the fifth season was probably written before the "Amy Pond" announcement was made. That just seems to be how British television shows work, whole series (seasons for us folk) written before starting to film and sometimes even cast. With Who, it's mainly because they film in blocks, not episodes, so they need to have the series written to plan out the blocks.

No, I thought she was OK in the Library two parter, which was technically at the end of her life. But the more screen time she got the worse she got.
Matt Lucas and Greg Davies are in it too; so it looks like it's going to be more of a comedy episode.
This is interesting -- River won't know who the twelfth Doctor is, at least to start with in the Christmas episode.

Maybe it's a timey-wimey thing and she meets up with him before she knows him. Kind of like in series 4 when he didn't know her.
Didn't River mention the Doctor gave him the 9/10's sonic during their last meeting together? Couldn't this be that last time before the Library?

It's implied it's their last night but not stated. Plenty of wiggle room. I think Moffat said so himself.
So they've finally worked out that being a Christmas Special doesn't mean you have to be a CHRISTMAS Special. Only took them 10 years:
