Do you miss the original crew?

If I could have only the TOS crew/actors, I would be happy and never miss any other version/actors at all. I'd even take the TOS archaic (now) special effects and props.

Nothing has ever come close for me. The TAS would be second if I had to choose another but for the most part TOS actors portrayed their characters so not a stretch.
Same.

How can you miss them if they never went away?

That's how I feel about it. They are there. They haven't gone anywhere. The series is there for me to watch and the books to read.

If we are talking about nostalgia I suppose I might miss the days of syndication when we would rush home after school to catch the episode and we would talk about it the next day at school. My and my girlfriends. Yes we sci fi girls existed even then. I am so glad I had friends that I could share it with because so many people watched the show in isolation. I miss that time in my life...but the series itself? Its right there. I can visit them whenever I like.

And I like the new cast btw but its all so very ...different.

I absolutely miss them original crew. Those that have passed away, that is.

I'll always go back and watch TOS and the original films. I will remember them for as long as I live, and I will miss them in the sense that we will never see another new adventure with them ever again. Those days have passed.

I remember, having watched TMP, and then a lot of TNG, and then finally TOS, I was amazed to discover the other five original cast films. It was great to watch those one at a time in rental/purchases from the store. III, II, IV, V, VI. Each one, better or worse was a great experience. Then, there was no more, and that was sad.

Watching a rerun is like looking at an old photograph. Rewatching TOS is like pulling out the old album. I'm not making new memories, i'm relieving old ones. That is where, and how, you can miss them, even if they are "forever" saved in some medium. I can never be an eight year old in the early 90s watching Space Seed on TV for the first time.

I have all 3 seasons on dvd, watch several episodes every week, so don't miss the original crew. I do miss the actors we've lost though, having spoken with a few. DeForest Kelley and I were both preacher's kids, his background inspired me to get into dramatics during high school and college, and I got a chance to tell him so.

No, I don't miss them. I guess I did feel a little bad at one time that their "adventures" had come to an end, but I've had 25 years to get used to it. No more Star Trek, no more Johnny Carson, no more Jim Rockford, no more Gunsmoke, no more Columbo, no more Beatles records... time moves on.

I miss them and I don't... I have every episode and movie ready to watch whenever I want... And folks over at New Voyages and Star Trek Continues do a good job keeping the spirit alive with great new stories. That said, I'd love to see the Star Trek I grew up on return with a proper budget, but I don't think that'll ever happen, which is a real pity.

I grew up on TOS on the UK BBC2, back in the 70's, and it still remains my favorite Trek. Like all life on this planet, the actors age and, unfortunately pass on, but the ethos and atmosphere of the 79 episodes that they acted in will forever remain.

I wouldn't like to personally see a re-booted Enterprise crew (as a certain series of films tries to do!) because, for me that takes away from the original portrayal of those characters. But I would love to see a TOS era Trek series that remained true to the spirit and look of TOS.

It will never happen, because the current age doesn't have a place for that type of story anymore, but I can dream!

I write and run RPG's, and have run TOS campaigns many times in the past, and will do again someday. That for me feeds my TOS addiction.

In truth even if TOS had continued for another season or two we would be faced with the same question.

Nothing lasts forever. I think it really comes down to the feeling you have watching the original characters. Each of them had their own distinctive charm that resonates with many of us. You simply can't replicate that with different performers in those roles. The best you can hope for is casting that makes the character as appealing/engaging again even if in slightly different way.

I don't so much miss the crew as I miss this style of filmmaking: the acting, lighting, cinematography, and oh dear God that wonderful music. And we must not forget the writing.
I miss the sense of wonder and adventure.
Occasionally I'll discover another old series or movie (or new movie, but usually foreign film) that has those same elements, but they are few and far between.

Yes and no.

Yes, because, with three of them having died, there will never be another onscreen adventure with those guys. (The new movies are fine as far as that goes, but it just isn't the same.). A big chunk of my youth is gone, a problem that gets worse with every damn day. THAT'S the real reason I say yes.

On the other hand, no, because about a month and a half ago, I finished another re-watch of my DVD's, along with the DVDs of TAS and the six movies, so I just spent some time with them recently. Something I can do over and over again as more time slips away. And of course, I will in another year or so.

Another reason for the "no" is because of the novels. The TOS books are the one series doing what they should be doing, and as long as I can afford to, I'll keep reading them.

I do, of course. I'm not sure we'll ever see the chemistry that Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly had again in a Star Trek production.

To this day, we have not. On a popular cultural level, it would be difficult to argue that any other characters/cast since--TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT or Nu Trek (trying to walk in the same shoes) had a group of actors and characters that so effectively generated the belief that they were watching a believable heart and face of an entire franchise.

I'd rather watch the same TOS episodes over and over again than watching new movies or a new series with other cators than Shatner, Nimoy and the others. It doesn't work for me.
In that case, I rather read the books which have kept all the main characters.

Five, actually, counting Majel Barrett and Grace Lee Whitney. We didn't see Chapel and Rand very often, but they were still part of the crew.

Yes, I miss them. TOS was, like so many other pieces of entertainment, art, or literature, a product of a time and place that came and went. All mourning to be done was done a long time ago. I still enjoy TOS episodes on streaming or DVD when I want to. However, I also enjoy the new movies with the new actors and the new creative people behind the scenes because they make Star Trek live again.

As I have been going through these various posts I did come across comments that I agree or partly agree with.

The show could of course never go on forever, the actors become old, want to do other roles or retire, and eventually the show simply comes to an end like all good things.

Other than what I also really miss is what A beaker full of death described; "I miss the sense of wonder and adventure."

It occasionally also happened in the later spin offs as otherwise I would not like those either but that feeling he mentions is what I miss a lot on sci fi on television and in the movies.
Perhaps I have been overexposed to much and now it requires more stimulation to feel that way again.

I guess that is what I am sort of looking for, not the same characters portrayed by new actors but new characters I can come to care for and whose journeys and adventures I want to follow.

It does not even have to be a Star Trek show, just something that generates the same kind of interest.

Have you tried Farscape? Or Warehouse 13?

Firefly is great too although not many episodes plus the movie and a special. Cancelled way too early.
