Axanar dropped a plot spoiler about a month ago

The part that concerns me the most:
“CBS has not authorized, sanctioned or licensed this project in any way, and this has been communicated to those involved,” a representative from the network told TheWrap. “We continue to object to professional commercial ventures trading off our property rights and are considering further options to protect these rights.”
...indicates that CBS may yet decide to stomp on Axanar's balls if they get too big.

Naw, BigJake has assured us that will not happen at all and I'm happy to take his word for it.

I won't call any of these things spoilers but more setup from Prelude to Axanar. If you are paying attention.

Axanar has collected half a million from their lastest fundraiser.

And forgive me, but who is BigJake in all of this?

I am the AxaNinja. I command staggering fees and I do the dirty work Peters doesn't want to get involved with. There was a hobo who gave him a dirty look on the way to Ares Studios once? You don't... you just don't even to know. ;)

(Actually I'm just a casual fan on the forum. I'm known for being the guy who got sick of people perpetually speculating about CBS dropping the hammer with zero indication that there's any genuinely new news about them doing so, and for being of the opinion that it would have happened already if it was going to happen. I also like daisies, horses, long walks in the sunset and people who follow their dreams. And Joe, of course.)

So, YOU'RE who the Kickstarter fees are going to! :p

I admit, like I said yesterday in the Renegades thread, I got a little heated up about the Axanar finances stuff right there and then (mainly because it was the first I'd heard any of it). But I'm staying out of it. I have no horse in this race. I'd love it to be a good production. That's pretty much where I'll leave it. :)

That CBS statement is not reassuring...I'm getting the vibe of "you're ok as long as it isn't TOO good. IF it starts looking completely like a pro job then you're toast..."

No.

Their message is that no should be making money off of their IP. Nothing more, nothing less. Plus, I don't think they're worried about Axanar looking like a pro job for a third of what it costs to produce a single episode of Game of Thrones.

Especially, from someone who has never ran this kind of project before.

I KNEW IT! To blazes with Morton Downey Jr. You are the REAL "Agent Provocateur"!

Sounds more like a worried IP lawyer not getting his cut because no one is suing anyone over nonprofit fan films of Star Trek and Star Wars.

That's a misrepresentation of the purpose the lawyer serves in the article and his quotes. He's a third-party expert providing context to the situation with no targ in the fight.

Heh... Whenever the term "expert" is used, red flags go up in my head. It should probably be defined at some point.

That was a fascinating article. Thank you for sharing.

CBS' comments were standard corporate speak, as BillJ put it. Honestly, CBS has the right to shut it down at any point that they feel infringed. I'll never fault them for that.

Peters' comments were also very interesting to me as well, in an amusing way. I'm not sure what to think at the moment and will have to give that some time to digest.

Given how big this is becoming legal action is always a shadow.

It´s a very strange article - pretty much openly hostile towards fanfilms and Axanar in particular, with some factual errors. Looks like it came in handy as a filler - because Star Trek always sells. It contains really no new information.

I don't know where you're getting that from. They interviewed Peters and a lawyer about the topic. That's not hostility, that's called due diligence.

Are there errors? Yes. The comments in the comments section are a joke; people dismissing the article entirely because of a typo, or the fact that the writer didn't mention Soval's name. Who cares?

It's not another mindless fluff piece which the production is oh so happy to trumpet about every time they're written, but it's not like the Wrap is shitting on Axanar either. The point of the article is pretty clear, and certainly not hostile toward Axanar. It's just pointing a very specific spotlight toward it.
