Axanar dropped a plot spoiler about a month ago

Hmmmmmm...

The only thing I noted was:

That the entry for April indicated that he commanded (past tense) the Enterprise on her shakedown, indicating that she's already operational.

Fap fap fap fap

It does make sense within the timeframe of the film and the guessed at nature of the battle setup.

It means the thing in the spoiler code is very fanwanky.

I hate that word.

Why is it bad to reference other works in yours in the first place? Are all the "pro" Trek novels "fanwanky" because they interconnect and relate to each other? Is every reference by a writer or film producer to something that happened in an episode or film "fanwanky".

"Fanwank" is a troll word all-to-often used against people who actually USE the amazing amounts of detail as inspirations to ask "what happened next" as a springboard for stories?

Can you go overboard with it? Yes. Can you be gratuitous about it? Sure. But that word gets way overused and abused and it needs to just go away.

I doubt Maurice means it as an insult, he's just humourously referencing a collective fannish tendency toward micro-reference and analysis. Nothing to get bent out of shape about.

I don't see why Duane's being so cagey. Spoiler tags would seem sufficient for whatever he's seen or worked out.

^You might be right. If it's not his intent, then fine. I see that word way too often though and usually used pejoratively.

masturbatory fan service = fanwank. I happen to find connect-the-dots small-universe stuff fanwanky. YMMV. After all, one person's "cooooool" is another person's "fap fap fap". :)

And I totally agree with that. If a story premise got started like this:
''man I really like Lobot from the Empire Strikes Back, I have a story where he goes back to his cyborg home planet and gets the girl''
...
that's not a story

The Battle of Axanar is basically an open book. All that was known was that it was a majorly important battle that helped the Federation, that Garth of Izar was the one who's tactics were used, and that it was required reading when Kirk was at the Academy.

After that it is up for grabs. FASA went with it being against the Klingons, and the Trouble with Tribbles suggest there have been battles with the Klingons in the recent past. The Battle of Donatu V was fought in 2245 given Spock's mention of years before the then present.

Tying the Axanar to a version of FASA's Four Years War, but setting it around the time of the Battle of Donatu V which is also the year the Enterprise was commissioned, would make for an interesting setup. Thus the war would be against the Klingons, with the aftermath being the long Cold War until the 2290s. That Enterprise is used with Captain April makes sense in context, as the new starship would be a game changer and keep the Enterprise as the thorn in the Klingon's side.

It seems it was always Enterprise. From first contact in 2151 to Narendra III, it was Enterprise.

^ Well, it could be... :shifty:

Of course it would be hard to top "Bossked!"

Basically all the micro-details of what various parts of canon a spinoff idea should line up with (and what the ships and uniforms should look like and what the in-universe explanations for such-and-such shot would be) are what I would call fanwank. (Which can be fun, I personally think we should all have a healthy relationship with all forms of wank, fan- included.) Just doing a spinoff story based on a character is fanfic, but it's not necessarily wank -- that's all in the delivery.

If you think the universe is being made too small, fine. Say that. Call it "fan service" even (that's a more or less neutral descriptive term).

"Fanwank" or "fap fap fap" is just trolling. It's insulting and demeaning to the people who do enjoy seeing how events interconnect.

She launched in '45 so a 6 month shake down would be during '44-45. It would depend on what year the Battle took place.

Edit:

Umm....well

Either someone didn't do much research before making it or this is the altered timeline hence the nu-ships.

No, the creators did a lot of research and placed Axanar in 2245 to match up with the year of the launch of the Enterprise.

Not sure what you are trying to get at with your link since it has no relevant canon information.

And it has been stated many times that the creators took cues from JJtrek ships but changed them to be Prime Timelime, such as revised hulls and nacelles and sizing.

Prelude to Axanar proves that the Axanar team knows how to serve a story without "Fan Service", something Renegades is reeking with. Connecting dots is only bad when it is overdone and in your face.

Nothing in Errand of Mercy prohibits a Four Years War with the Klingons previously. The only thing EoM says is that the Federation and the Klingons are currently not in open conflict.

Fortunately, you don't get to dictate what other people write.

The ToS for the board do dictate what you can and can't write by prohibiting trolling and belittling others.

I find that term to be both.

I find it even more belittling that you imply that I just have to sit and take it.

Ok, is Maurice making a personal comment towards YOU?!

NO, he is NOT! he is categorizing a style of writing. YOU might not like what the term implies, but tough. He is calling it as it is.

When one starts taking something TOO personally when the comment itself is not even directed towards that person, is the time to take a step back from the keyboard

You shouldn't be backseat modding, just hit the notify button if something bothers you.

I do consider it "fap, fap, fap" material, by the way.
