An fanfilm, especially a pew pew movie made to pander to fans far more than a studio would ever do, cannot compete with an official production, nor should be ever be given equal consideration.
Oh come down off your high-horse. That preview scene has absolutely
nothing to do with "pew pew", and you know it.
You know what
does have everything to do with "pew pew"?
JJ Trek. "Pew pew". Smirking Kirk. Boobs and juvenile sex humor. ID was a little better than 09, but not that much.
And visually the finished Vulcan scene looks as good or better than anything I've seen on the big screen.
Okay hold up, as a VFX professional, while the work Axanar has shown is extremely well done for a lower budget film, and I'm sure it will look very nice, to compare that to the work that ILM, Pixomondo and other companies did on Star Trek and Into Darkness is absolutely ludicrous and makes me discount the rest of your post. In terms of complexity and technical achievement, those films are on a completely different level then this, and I'm sure that the people who did the effects for Axanar would be the first to agree.
Oh please. I don't consider "nausea cam", lens flares, and a harsh, optically blown-out image to be marks of "complexity and technical achievement". I call it shoddy FX.
Is Axanar photo-real quality? No. Not at that budget. But they don't have the resources of ILM, et al and still put out something that might not be
Jurassic World, or
Terminator quality, but that looks as at least as good on screen as the Star Wars prequel films, and is perfectly watchable.
For a shoe-string budget (in Hollywood terms) that's a frakking miracle. Give them time on ILM's render farm and it would be even better.
