No promo's/teasers yet?

It's early july, and I had expected some form of teaser or promo to be online by now. Nothing fancy, a logo and voice-over or something.

It's about three months untill the season starts, right? Wouldn't they want to advertise a bit by now?

BBC America had a teaser a few weeks ago, but it's not worth wasting words on.

I expect there will be a trailer at SDCC. Whether or not the proles not at SDCC get to see it is another question.

If the past is anything to go by, the BBC won't promote the series until within just a few weeks of the season premiere. They won't even announce an air date (even though they know now when it is) until the last minute. Frankly, I think this... secrecy on their part is stupid, and it causes problems with their overseas broadcast partners because of the marketing and scheduling requirements they have in their markets.

^Why should the BBC care about overseas, it's not like US stations take into account when a show airs in the UK when it comes to advertising it.

I wouldn't really expect ads to start appearing on BBC for DW until early August, it might appear in a general Autumn advert before then.

For what it's worth, I agree with you that there's nothing wrong with the BBC's indifference to its overseas partners. As a public broadcaster for the UK, their only concern should be for the eyeballs they get on BBC 1. I don't disagree with that one iota.

At the same time, I think it can be counterproductive for the BBC to hobble their partners as that could depress the money they receive back through Worldwide. And I suspect that, thanks to the Tories, Worldwide's revenue streams will be more important than ever in the years to come.

I think they might be behaving in a stupid manner, but that doesn't mean they're behaving incorrectly. :)

I wouldn't say "stupid." It is part of how British television works, and it seems to work very well for them. The problem though, with a show with the international audience of Doctor Who it doesn't really work too well. Since same day broadcasting started worldwide, we have had some cases where the airdate for the US, Canada, and Australia were announced a month in advance but BBC waited its standard two weeks to avoid counterprograming from its competitors. But, when three other networks around the worldwide have announced when they're premiering the show, ITV or Sky or whoever can figure out when BBC is airing it anyway.

It's also kind of silly they get so cagey at times about airdates that they won't even confirm the Christmas specials will air on Christmas. Hell, in The Writer's Tale RTD said BBC wouldn't even confirm for him if the Christmas specials would indeed air on Christmas.

Though, sometimes BBC does announce airdate well in advance. In January 2013 they announced the second half of season 7 would premiere in March 2013. And then, of course, everyone knew all year in 2013 when Day of the Doctor would air.

Wait till roughly a month before the series airs. That's always been the time when the Beebs start their marketing campaign for Doctor Who.

There was a teaser (the logo and the words "returns this fall") after the Orphan Black finale.

There is a series 9 clips trailer to be shown at SDCC, but AIUI it's not going to be released to the public, especially in the UK, so we'll have to rely on what attendees illicitly record again.

Even with "Day of the Doctor", a lot of the publicity didn't come out until around the time the special aired. In October I believe there was the cool 'teaser' with all the Doctors in various settings, but I don't think the actual footage came out until the end of the month or the early weeks of November (could be wrong) although I believe there was a peak at San Diego Comic Con.

Hm, I seem to recall that a teaser for series 8 aired in July or something last year. Could be wrong ofcourse.

The first public trailer with footage dropped on November 8th or 9th. I was at Philcon that weekend, and I remember watching the trailer there on my tablet through the hotel WiFi. And then being on a panel later where we were discussing what we wanted from the anniversary special and discovering that I was the only one who had seen the trailer.

The SDCC trailer is on the "Day of the Doctor" DVD.

In May we had the brief teasers featuring the Doctor standing in the exploding console room. The only thing of note I remember from July was the leaked scripts and incomplete versions of the episodes.

Maybe the early teasers that year were because of a new Doctor then? And this year the teasers will be somewhat later, since there is no big thing to show.

Well, the official Doctor Who facebook page just posted this:
There’s something special coming your way… We suggest making an appointment for around 10.30pm tonight (UK time) on this very feed... #DoctorWho

So maybe we will get a trailer soon.

Given that (taking the time difference into account) that's 15 minutes into the SDCC panel I'd call it a safe bet.

Who is that girl at the end? It feels like we should be familiar with her. Have we actually seen her before?

The actress (Maisie Williams) has not been on Doctor Who before. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean the character hasn't (see Missy). So the answer is: maybe. ;)

On Game of Thrones, sure.

The character? No clue... But I'm betting on either Clara or, inexplicably, Susan.

I wouldn't bet on either of those. It's a trailer, so it's probably a scene taken out of context. She's "guest star of the week," in whatever situation that's from the Doctor doesn't expect to see her, and to his surprise he does and she's snarky about it.

Williams is in the medieval two-parter, so she's probably from that timezone and, maybe, a bit anachronistic.

In short, I expect no great meaning from "What took you so long, old man?" And certainly not Clara in another guise or Susan.
