Game Of Thrones Season 5 TV Only Discussion (Spoilers)

If there were even a chance of him coming back, he wouldn't have answered the interviewer's question as candidly as he did.

I guess I can say this without spoiler code, since the show has caught up to the books: We've all been expecting Jon to come back for years now. The book ends the same way as the show - he is stabbed multiple times, left to die, chapter over. But he is such an important character that even the trope-demolishing GRRM can't just leave him dead. Mel is at the wall, and we have seen red priests perform resurrections already. Perhaps he will come back differently, but he is definitely coming back.

I haven't read the books, but with the way his body is framed by the camera, it's as if the pool of blood that slowly spreads in the snow seems to form the shape of a wing. I'm not calling witchcraft (yet), but I'm 51% sure that it's some sort of foreshadowing or symbolism at work.

I'll say it again: even if Jon comes back to life in the books, that won't be happening on the show.

In the words of Bones, "he's dead, Jim".

You need someone to root for. Everything can't just be...bleak. Jon was one of the last shining lights. If he really is dead in the books and the show, is there anything to care about at all in Westeros? Stannis' story is done. I suppose Brienne will find Sansa and Littlefinger is still doing some conspiring somewhere, but with Jon gone the only really interesting plot thread left is Mereen.

I suppose they have two seasons left to tie the show up. Possibly 3, but likely 2. So that leaves 20 episodes for...the battle between dragons and White Walkers.

And who really gives a crap about the Wall now? Sam is off to Oldtown, Jon is dead, so...Davos and Mel will bicker while the rest of the braindead idiots in the Night's Watch continue to ignore the impending threat because of their dislike for Wildlings?

If there were even a chance of him coming back, he wouldn't have answered the interviewer's question as candidly as he did.

I hope he stays dead. Any resurrection would cheapen that final scene.

BUT -- I'm sure I'm not the only one that remembers Ronald D. Moore and Katee Sackhoff giving "candid" interviews about another character's death a few years ago here.

I don't recall either Katee or RDM ever saying that Katee was no longer under contract or that Starbuck wouldn't be back.

Melisandre conveniently coming back to the wall before he dies raises the possibility that he will be brought back. So I'm putting the percentage of a resurrection at 48%. But if he really is dead...fuck the whole Wall storyline. The Night's Watch are a bunch of ingrates. Let 'em be overrun by zombies.

Sackhoff did an extensive podcast interview right after Starbuck "died" where she said she was done with the show,as I recall. Moore's comments in the podcast commentary for "Maelstrom" are available online.

Other serialized shows have used social media and publicity to mislead fans as well.

But we'll see...

Now I don't care one bit about Lord Snow or the rest of the Night's Watch, last year during the Battle of Castle Black I cheered for the Wildlings (even though i knew they were doomed from the books) and always hated the Wall storyline. So, as far as I am concerned, they can all be eaten by Wights (except for Sam and Gilly and they are off to Old Town anyways)

However, the thing about GoT/SoIaF is, they have never killed a character who was vital to the myth arc of the Song of Ice and Fire; neither Ned nor Rob were of importance to that arc, Jon however.... I do not believe we have seen the last of him (books or show)

I was hoping for Sansa to kill Myranda. Not impressed what they did with her this year. But at least she's outta Winterfell now.

Myrcella! No! So...Thrystane is dead. There's just no way he's going to survive that sea journey now and Elaria will have her war, at the cost of House Martell's future, I might add, unless they decide to introduce some characters they have left out after all.

Still don't care about Meereen and rather disappointed that it seems like we're gonna see more of it. get off your ass and go conquering already, you stupid white haired twat:brickwall:

The walk of shame was magnificent, only the grumpy Septa constantly going "Shame Shame Shame" was a bit over-the top.
Kind of disappointing we did not see Tommen or Margaery. What is the fate of the beautiful Rose of Highgarden?

Stannis is dead for sure....unless Brienne, just as she was about to ring down Oathkeeper on his throat saw the light in the tower and, in typical Brienne fashion, forgot about everything and just charged towards Winterfell.

It was clever to have so many possible deaths end up in cliffhangers/not shown, this way many people will be unsure who's deaths will "stick"

Just remember D&D got the gig/blessing from GRRM by guessing Jon's parentage...
I call bullshit on his actual death.
Mel conveniently came back to The Wall. And why introducing The Brotherhood Without Banners and Beric Dondarion in season 2?

I remember those interviews as well. I know for a fact Ron Moore used the weekly episode podcasts to perpetuate the misdirection.

Also, here's one interview/story relating Sackhoff doing same.

Sackhoff recently told an Oregon radio station she frequents that as far as she knows, her character is dead, and that she has no immediate plans to return to the show. Starbuck's death has been one of the most talked about television topics since the episode first aired on SciFi Channel Sunday night, but surprisingly, that's not the character death Moore says he regrets the most on the show.

Wow. Tell us how you really feel.

I suffered of a whole book of Daenerys just sitting there and being ineffectual at ruling and it was waaaay longer, waaay more repetitive and waaaay more painful than on the show.

You can't imagine my trauma :(. I always hoped that perhaps the next chapter she'd finally leave that blasted city behind or the one after that. But she never did. She.Never.Did :scream: There were pages pon pages with practically nothing at all happening; pages upon pages, upon pages and then you turn the page, thinking it's over only to see that she will have baths, oogle Daario's ass and be upset over Meereen resisting her reforms for another 50 pages.

The TV version was fast-paced and action-packed in comparison.

Shame!... Shame!

So was that all Lena Headey in those scenes? I can imagine she'd have been up for it, but in certain shots it definitely looked like her face was CGI'd onto another body.
The only reason I can think of for that is that in real life she's got quite a lot of tattoos. I would've thought you could cover them with make up or whatever, but there really were a few shots were her face didn't look right I thought.

I'm the complete opposite. I'd feel that his death now would cheapen the whole experience and make it all feel pointless, while taking away one of the last few likeable and interesting characters left in Westeros. I think he's way too important to take out of rotation after five seasons of building him up. I know the books and the show are about challenging those kinds of storytelling preconceptions, but sometimes the audience deserves to have their loyalty to a character rewarded too.

BUT -- I'm sure I'm not the only one that remembers Ronald D. Moore and Katee Sackhoff giving "candid" interviews about another character's death a few years ago here.
Hell, just this season, the GoT showrunners might have pulled a minor rope-a-dope by listing Joseph Mawle (Benjen Stark) in the casting notes for Episode 8, leading fans to believe he might show up among the Free Folk or as a White Walker, and then he never appeared. And then in this episode they played that Benjen clip in the "Previously On..." segment to give you the impression he might be coming back again, only to have it serve a completely different purpose. So while they're not playing JJ Abrams level obfuscation games, they're not above a little audience trickery to build excitement or preserve a storyline.

Actually, it's the other way round - there were a lot of protests from local residents on location about her nudity, so they had her not nude on certain location shots and had to add the nudity on in post...

^ Coupled with the fact that Lena was VERY pregnant at the time of filming, most of the nude shots were a body double coupled with CGI. Primarily for the location issues mentioned above, but also for practical issues related to pregnancy.

He and Tyrion were my favorite book characters. And it seems if he stays dead the build up over his real heritage is for nothing. Sure something can be revealed about.. a dead guy.

But even more pressing without him is there a single interesting person left at Castle Black? It seems more likely to me than not that he will return.

Who were the horsemen with Daenerys? Dothraki?

^ Yeah, Dothraki.

Also, if Miracle Mel cures Jon of being Mostly Dead, he'll have been relieved of his oath to the Night's Watch and will be free to pursue anything he needs to do outside of Castle Black. He's actually in a perfect position to go on to bigger and better things, except for that whole pesky being dead part. But I think he'll get over that.

If there were any chance at all of keeping things a secret, the idea that Harington's Exit Interview is misdirection would hold some weight, but if Kit is in fact still under contract and does return for Season 6, we will know the second he shows up on set, making his and David and Dan's comments completely pointless, especially since there's only a couple of weeks to go before shooting on S6 begins.

There's absolutely nothing to be gained from this kind of misdirection at this stage of the game.
