I'm all for a proper school-age Spidey. I'm especially hoping that MCU Spidey is very intelligent. Movie Spidey has so far been quite a few (dozen) IQ points below his comicbook counterpart.

On the other hand, all the Spiderman films to date have tried their hardest to skip over his high school days as fast as possible, so why not try something different? Plus, the MCU roster of heroes needs diversifying asap. Bringing in younger heroes can help with that (and most of the younger heroes in the Marvel universe aren't popular enough to carry their own film series - but Spiderman is...)

Not thrilled about focusing so much on the high school years but Butterfield could do a good job. I am excited about Jared Hess being considered to direct, could bring a pretty fresh style.

    Dear Marvel/Sony,
Stop making long term plans for Spidey that you not be able to follow up and then you will want to reboot him once again. Here's a better idea, come up with a good story with no expectation or assumption of a sequel. Just write a self contained story and if it does well, do another and so on. Spider-Man is my favorite Marvel character and I've spent hard earned dollars on your movies which I've enjoyed even the worst of them. I'm tired of disappointing plans that fall through and I'm tired of reboots. Just make a good movie and it will take care of itself.

You obviously haven't been keeping up with the current version in the comics.

Wouldn't it be awkward if his voice changed in the middle of shooting?

I'm not sure why the jokes about how young he looks. That's the whole idea. The whole "looks 28, plays a high-schooler" thing is so played out. Even more played out than the phrase "played out." ;)

It's Man of Steel all over again. :p

I think it's a really good choice. I know we've technically already seen the "high school years" in a couple movies, but this time it'll be nice to see a guy who genuinely looks like a young high school kid interacting with the grown up Avengers.

I think that alone would make a huge difference, and also make this seem unique enough from the previous Spideys.

Can't be long now before we get the first photoshops of him in a spider suit.

And the Hollywood Reporter has apparently tweeted "maybe not" for Asa Butterfield. Essentially, he screen tested this week, but they also are planning on screen testing others. We're apparently still in a holding pattern. It's either Asa Butterfield or Tom Holland.

My personal preference is for Holland, but both are really good choices for the role.

Didn't want a high school Spidey, didn't want another reboot, but it looks like Garfield shot himself in the foot.

Apparently Sony/Marvel don't take a lot of notice of my preferences so, I've got to say that as they're going high school, I'm happy with Butterfield...

I'm not sure that it was down to Garfield so much as to disappointing earnings for the last film. Yes, there was that episode where he missed some appointment with Sony executives but had TAS2 been a box-office success, I doubt very much that we'd be getting a reboot, regardless of his behaviour.
