I wondered about the viability of such a film but on reflection, I don't think it will take away from the live-action series. I would consider the 5 live-action movies to date a bit scary for my kids (aged 8 & 5) but would take them to see an animated film. Mind you, given the involvement of the people behind the Lego Movie, I sort of wish that this was a Lego Spider-man (but maybe Lego Batman has that market covered).

The fact that I'd quite enjoy the animated movie is obviously only coincidental.

With the MCU announcing 'in continuity' animated features, it wouldn't have taken much for Sony to have brought into the idea...

Plus I wonder if Peter Parker and Spider-Man might appear in Marvel Agents of Shield as Sony no longer holds the TV rights for Spider-Man.

But I hope that the Peter Parker/Spider-Man that we see is the college-age Parker, like we saw in the 1990's cartoon, and then see him get him married to Mary-Jane and see more of their post-wedding ceremony lives.

I was kinda hoping that Marvel's deal with Sony would basically be Marvel telling Sony to sit down, shut up, and just enjoy the profits, but alas...

Hopefully the new Spider-Man stories take a few cues from, not just the comic books and other TV shows, but the 1990's prose novel series. It would be interesting to see Diane Duane's Spider-Man Trilogy turned into a movie.

I know they're going for teenage Pete, but that kid looks like he could get under-12 discounts....

he still has a bit of time to age before the camera starts rolling and buff up a bit for the part.

I hope that's true. Asa was my pick from the candidates, so I'd be happy if they went with him. And not much buffing needed, in my opinion. A gangly, very young Pete is just what the doctor ordered for a change.

I'm not surprised we're getting an animated movie for one of the big two's popular superheroes, but I am kind of surprised they went with someone who was already getting live action movies. I would have figured they would want to use a new character for their first animated movie, rather than one who's already gotten four soon to be five live action movies.
I do have to wonder what if any relationship there will be between the animated and live action movie. I don't have a problem with them being totally unconnected, but I could see it confusing some people. It isn't bad when we have them in two different mediums, like The Flash being in the DC movies, and on the Arrowverse shows, since you can just say one is TV and one is movies, that's going to be a lot more complicated if they're both movies.
I've only seen Butterfield in Hugo, and he did a good job there. He seems like he should be a good fit, if he does actually get the role.

A lot of pictures they're showing of him frankly are several years old.

An interesting bit from the article...

So, it looks like they are going all-in on a high school age Peter Parker. Opinions?

Why would he need to buff up? If they're going for a teenage spidey there isn't really any need. He was called Puny Parker for a reason in the early days.

It seems weird to me that they seem so into Peter being in high school. I was reading through the descriptions of some of the early AMS comics a couple weeks ago, and he was already starting college #31. So in the character's entire 50+ year history he barely spent 2 of them in high school.

More like 3+. There was a six-month gap between Amazing Fantasy #15 and the first issue of ASM, and I don't think ASM was monthly for at least a few issues.
