The look of the Joker doesn't really jive with earlier leaked images. Maybe he sports a few looks?

No one is going to force you to watch the film, the same way no one is forcing you to read this thread.

That could probably be said for many films just this summer.
    Ant-Man
    Fantastic Four
    Terminator 5
    Jurassic World
    Mad Max
...just to name a few where the discussion has been mixed about the internet.

Yep. And I'm far more interested in this than the next Star Wars film. There. I've said it. (ducks for cover  )

^ Mind if I take shelter with you?

After the disappointment that was Star Trek Into Darkness, my enthusiasm for Episode 7 has been next to zero. I wholly expect that JJ repeated what he did was STID and just remake a previous film. With STID it was TWOK. With TFA, I suspect it will copy a lot of ANH; with themes, dialogue quoted verbatim, and maybe, just maybe a new Dearth Star destruction scene for the finale.

Star Trek Into Darkness was just fine. Sorry it didn't impress you, but to suggest that it wasn't a successful, well-made film solely because it "disappointed" you. I get basing an assumption on previous experience, but JJ is a talented filmmaker and I have faith that he'll make The Force Awakens a spectacular and entertaining film, just as he's done with each of his previous films.

I think Star Wars is a much better fit for JJ, so despite my opinion of ST12 I am actually looking forward to Da Force Awakens. I honestly feel like JJ is a better filmmaker when he's not working with Orci and the Kurtz.

Where in my original post did I suggest it was not successful?

My lack of enthusiasm stems from what I saw JJ do in STID and what I've notice in his other projects; Super 8, Cloverfield, MI 3, MI 4. He comes off as a checklist director. That is to say that he puts things in his movie that he knows people will want to see but it feels like he's ticking boxes as opposed to going all the way with his ideas.

That was Matt Reeves, not JJ.

Likewise, Brad Bird directed Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, not JJ Abrams.

Way to focus on the wrong part of my comment. I also said it was a well-made film, an opinion you clearly don't share.

Ah I see. JJ was the Executive Producer not the director. I remember JJ's name being put on all the promo material at the time. Thanks for the correction.

Which part did I not focus on? The part where you jumped to the (wrong) conclusion about why I disliked STID? Or the part where you implied I didn't think STID was successful? Also I never said it was not a well made film. Quit pushing your assumptions of why someone else might dislike something. I gave my reasons, but I will make them clearer.

With STID, JJ had a chance to do something wholly original. That was the point of the reboot, to free up continuity and potentially ignore all the canon (episodes and movies) that had come before. He could've did whatever he wanted, but instead he elected to do a TWOK remake. While simultaneously lying for 4 years that he was not doing TWOK again.

    Who does that?

I don't even know what STID is about.

Was it about Kirk and Spock's friendship? They've only known eachother for 1 year. Too soon for them to be ride and die together, like they were in TOS and the original movies.

Was it a commentary on 9/11, The War on Terror and Drone strikes? Not really. Those elements are certainly apart of the film but STID doesn't present itself as a message movie. More like these are ingredients that would make a good action flick. Since words like 9/11, terrorism, and drone strikes are topical in today's world. Captain America TWS did this too, but it had a message in it's delivery.

Was it coming of age story, mixed with tragedy and sacrifice? Well ST09 had all of that. Why do it again? The sacrifice (of Kirk) was meaningless when he was revived 10 minutes later thanks to Khan's "super blood".

Now, none of these things make STID bad, but IMO the movie was a disappointment. I mean, we waited 4 years for this? I'd already seen TWOK remade in 2002 with Nemesis, and everyone hated and castigated that film.

Well, me too. I was a Superman fan for nearly twenty years before Star Wars premiered. ;)

Isn't there already enough fighting on this thread about MOS, the casting of Affleck and the trailer without having to borrow the ongoing fights about Star Trek Into Darkness and nu-Trek in general?

Sure there might be some similar themes, but the ones in ANH were so basic and universal that that would probably be hard to avoid. And yeah there will probably be another super weapon that has to be destroyed, but that's kind of par for the course with big scifi blockbusters (not to mention nearly every Marvel movie ever made).

And of course even if it IS a beat for beat remake of ANH, that would still make it lightyears more fun and entertaining to watch than all the prequels put together. ;)

I love how that clip of Star Talk features a clip of Tyson talking to Christopher Nolan. Then on the show Tyson ends up talking about Batman v. Superman.

The theme of STID is pretty obvious. It's in the film and in the ads.

"Is there anything you wouldn't do for your family?"

On Nibiru Kirk breaks the Prime Directive to save his "brother" Spock.

At the archives a man sacrifices everything to save his daughter

Kirk loses his "father" in the Daystrom attack leading him down a path of vengeance.

Khan's actions are motivated by rescuing his "family".

Marcus saves Carol because she is his daughter.

Kirk sacrifices himself to save his "family".

Spock's rage is fueled by his "brother's" death.

    Family is the theme.

The Joker discussion may have become relevant retroactively...

Rumor: Joker to appear in MoS.
