So I started watching "Babylon 5" for the first time.

Don't let the look of the set sway you from enjoying a good story.

There are some great episodes and some good stories and some pretty powerful messages that show how tyranny works.

One of my favorite stories is Believers which presents Dr. Richards with an ethical dilemma in which an ultra religious family will not allow him to do an operation that will save the child's life. They believe that the operation will destroy their child's soul and would rather let the child die than have his soul destroyed.

This episode is actually a pretty ballsy episode, and could arguably be the most ballsy episode of the entire series.

Just finished the series. Wow. What a wild ride. Beautiful ending and worth the journey. I covered 5 seasons, in 2 weeks!

I was truly sad to see Sheridan go but happy to see Ivanona back. Even for a brief moment. Why they canned Ivanova for Lochley, I have no idea. Lochley faded in to the back halfway through season 5 and was essentially a glorified guest star.

Also, wtf they do to Lennier?! I was expected him to pull something but that? Just tasteless for a very likable, quirky character like Lennier to pull.

I plan on rewatching season 1 now. Gonna try to catch all the references to future storylines I missed my first time though.

Don't you mean Dr. Franklin?

Claudia was gone through things that happened during the waiting for season 5 period. Others like Jan, could tell you far more, but I missed Ivanova. The scene in her office when she speaks in 'Sleeping in Light' was a real highpoint for me since I didn't know she'd be back. I didn't mind Lochley, but I think Tracy Scoggins played her too much like Ivanova. She softened up some in the movies and was less of an Ivanova clone there.

Poor Lennier. I liked his arc, but the show leaves his story sadly unfinished. If someone could do a spinoff novel of his story from there, I would love to read it one day.

Season one is probably my favorite after having seen the series. Seeing the world building going on with the knowledge of what will come really brings a lot of the stories together. The first time through, season one seemed very odd for the many different tones from episode to episode but in review it was wonderful being able to see the many story ideas that will come together.

Yes, so what?

I know. I broke the great nerd rules so I must be corrected and insulted all to tarnation and back.

I really don't care if I did or not.

Your offense has no substance or credibility to me.

Dude.

There's still 6 Movies (and 13 episodes of Crusade (and then when you're really gagging for it, you try to find the unfilmed Crusade scripts that are online places, especially the one about Bester's final fate from after the... ) and Books which matter and bullshit books that don't matter.).

You still have the movie In the Beginning. A prequel set during the Earth Minbari War which uses a lot of clips from the series (about the past) to tie together the over all story.

Thirdspace set during season 4.

Legends of the Rangers, made after Crusade, but set two years before Crusade.

Lost Tales is set in 2270-something, half way between the end of the series and the destruction of the station (which was the last movie made).

Call to Arms is the movie that introduces the ships and characters and background for Crusade.

River of Souls is set a year or 2 after season 5 with Martin Sheen in a Unitard.

It's not over. Get your shit together and buckle up.

With a couple of exceptions I won't name here, I found most of those sadly inferior to the original series though. :/

On the other hand, many of the novels are pretty darn cool.

Was this meant to be posted somewhere else, because it doesn't seem to be related to any recent post in this thread.

Been away for a while. Congratulations to M.A.C.O on the first watch. I think you'll find the second viewing is almost like seeing a whole different show now that you have an idea of what's coming. B5 rewards repeat viewing and attentive, intelligent viewing.

If you're truly interested, I can go into some detail about Claudia's departure but...it really doesn't matter anymore. Stuff happened and it obviously had an effect on the story but it's water under the bridge and relations seem to have thawed in recent years.

Re: Claudia Christen not being in S5 this is what the lurkers guide says about it.

I was at that convention. I think all sides were caught up in red tape and erroneous assumptions that fans will never understand. It was a real shame though. They could have tried to tempt her back for some guest appearances, although her availability might have been an issue. The show was definitely weaker for her absence. A meeting between Ivanova and Marcus on the Day of the Dead could have been fun.

I would have liked to Andrea return to tie up some of her loose ends too. The telepath plot might have been more fun if she'd shown up as Bester's aide but Lyta used Kosh's recordings of her personality to re-insert old Talia as a sleeper agent personality and perform a neat switcheroo.

...and the reason Claudia was in Sleeping in Light, the finale, was because it was filmed at the end of season 4 before she left the show. They filmed the finale at the end of season 4 because they weren't sure they'd have a fifth season. When season 5 was assured, jms shelved Sleeping in Light, and presented it at the end of S5. It's a benefit of jms' lomg-range plotting skills that the episode still fit just fine.
