ok...as a young fan of TOS, I have to say that ,previous to this series, almost all sci-fi on the big or little screen was like watching some silly, preteen adventure. Why was I so TOS-struck madly---because,on my opinion, TOS was the same quality as the great sci-fi writers were putting out in their novels and short stories. There was some great moral or ethical point to many of them so they engaged us, not only in the human drive for exploration, but in iconic human life challenges(ie, prejudice,judgement,values,acceptance,honor,dignity,compassion,etc.). And that`s why, I believe, there was and is(still) universal appeal to the series as there has and always will be for the great classics humanity has produced.
So.....until someone one(or a like minded group of someones)comes along with this same sort of serious, deep commitment(instead of what is saleable) to the original vision of Roddenberry then a new tv series will not succeed for any length of time.
As as 14 year old I did not fall in love with TOS for it`s youth appeal or special effects(although it was pretty cool to actually see some believable aliens, although there were too many humanoid ones, in my estimation). It was rather for it`s vision of the future as humankind explored the universe and dealt with all it`s foibles and challenges along the way in a thought-provoking manner.
As I have read in the past, in some New Age material, TOS was a guided show--intended to introduce humanity to what they can expect and have to deal with in the future in regards to contact with various life forms existing in the universe.
Considering the lessons taught us in TOS, I can, now, well believe this.
THere is something truely great about Star Trek. It is not only what many class ,a phenomena(which I consider a trite perception) but had some sort of true purpose to serve humanity in a meaningful way regarding future challenges.
Anyone considering this tv project needs to do it well and with integrity to the original vision, which is what created this vast confederation of Trekkies all over Earth to begin with! Otherwise, why bother............there is too much shallow trash on tv and in film, already.
