Star Trek back on TV!!!!!

Sometimes troubled productions turn out good movies... just look at Super Mario Bros. the movie.

(kidding but I actually love that movie)

I'm not sure this even qualifies as "troubled" yet. So they took awhile to settle on the director and screenwriter? That's hardly alarming at this stage of production.

It only sounds messy because the internet turns every routine twist and turn in the development process into Big News and inflates rumors into crises.

By contrast, they were rewriting the script on TMP near daily, and that was after the movie had started filming. And even before that, there was all that confusion about whether it was going to be a TV series, or a TV-movie, or a feature film . . .

Well, I think it's generally a part of human nature to enjoy seeing the puny rise and the mighty fall, and after two financially successful movies, it's probably a little newsworthy to see a little trouble in paradise at CBS.

I'm willing to see where the chips fall, but I was just pointing out that there has been a lot of buzz regarding things going on behind the stained glass windows at CBS. If you are in possession of knowledge regarding the circumstances there, or know by general experience that this is a normal situation, then I will definitely defer to your experience and knowledge. I know that 90 percent of what we see on the Internet is click-bait anyway. I'd like to see a great movie and other than that, I don't have a dog in the fight. However, thanks for the information. Interesting stuff! ;)

To clear, I have absolutely no inside info regarding this particular movie. I'm just speaking from general experience, both with movie-making AND the internet, with the latter often being in unseemly haste to pronounce judgment on upcoming movies before a single frame of film has been shot.

Nor is all this backstage shuffling anything new. I was just reading a book on the making of the original 1968 PLANET OF THE APES. At least three different directors were attached to the movie before it started filming, the screenplay went through multiple rewrites and at least two writers, and at least one major character had to be recast because of health issues. (Edward G. Robinson was supposed to play Doctor Zaius, but had to drop out because he was too frail to cope with the demands of the makeup.)

If the internet existed back in 1967, we'd all be clucking and shaking our heads at all this backstage turmoil . . . .

Interesting. It is true in music that some of the best music comes from bands that faced many conflicts and hardships when creating some of the greatest albums ever recorded.
We'll see next year what the results are.

Good point.

Here's another weird example. Back around 1930 or so, Universal originally announced that their upcoming film, Frankenstein, was going to be directed by Robert Florey and star Bela Lugosi as the Monster. But, before shooting started, James Whale replaced Florey and an unknown actor named Boris Karloff replaced Lugosi . . . and the rest is history.

Now let's imagine the internet in 1930:

"Okay, Lugosi has already bailed on the movie and now the director has been replaced. Plus, I hear the script bears little or no resemblance to the novel--and they added a hunchback to the plot? This movie is looking like a train wreck . . . . "

(They also ended up reshooting the ending before the movie was released.)

ok...as a young fan of TOS, I have to say that ,previous to this series, almost all sci-fi on the big or little screen was like watching some silly, preteen adventure. Why was I so TOS-struck madly---because,on my opinion, TOS was the same quality as the great sci-fi writers were putting out in their novels and short stories. There was some great moral or ethical point to many of them so they engaged us, not only in the human drive for exploration, but in iconic human life challenges(ie, prejudice,judgement,values,acceptance,honor,dignity,compassion,etc.). And that`s why, I believe, there was and is(still) universal appeal to the series as there has and always will be for the great classics humanity has produced.

So.....until someone one(or a like minded group of someones)comes along with this same sort of serious, deep commitment(instead of what is saleable) to the original vision of Roddenberry then a new tv series will not succeed for any length of time.
As as 14 year old I did not fall in love with TOS for it`s youth appeal or special effects(although it was pretty cool to actually see some believable aliens, although there were too many humanoid ones, in my estimation). It was rather for it`s vision of the future as humankind explored the universe and dealt with all it`s foibles and challenges along the way in a thought-provoking manner.
As I have read in the past, in some New Age material, TOS was a guided show--intended to introduce humanity to what they can expect and have to deal with in the future in regards to contact with various life forms existing in the universe.
Considering the lessons taught us in TOS, I can, now, well believe this.

THere is something truely great about Star Trek. It is not only what many class ,a phenomena(which I consider a trite perception) but had some sort of true purpose to serve humanity in a meaningful way regarding future challenges.

Anyone considering this tv project needs to do it well and with integrity to the original vision, which is what created this vast confederation of Trekkies all over Earth to begin with! Otherwise, why bother............there is too much shallow trash on tv and in film, already.
