Director Ralph Senensky Dies at 102

"I might even try planting a fig tree.

A man's entitled to that, isn't he?"

Rest in Peace, Mr. Senensky. "Metamorphosis" will always be one of my favorite Trek episodes from any series.

The scene with the scarf is sublime. At some point in my time on the BBS, a commentary by Senensky about how that scene serendipitously came to be is linked to.

Lisabeth Hush did outstanding voice work, and the universal translator was used very effectively.

Senensky's comments on Hush's use, including on it being she, by Senensky's choice, who actually performed the used recordings: https://senensky.com/special-who-voiced-the-companion/

The camera work and utilization of the set were beautiful, with moving clouds even. It's probably the best use of indoor planet sets in the series.

"Metamorphosis" made my recent cut of the top 20 TOS episodes.

Addition - Wow, the earlier discussion I mentioned was from back in 2011. Time flies!

That will link to Senensky's blog with discussion from him about "Metamorphosis," including the scarf and set.

"Obsession" was always one of my favorites
I really like Obsession until the creature turns into a super weapon capable of multi-warp speeds and is impervious to phasers torpedoes and shield (but not reverse flow on the ventilation system), and is ready to spawn.
So it goes from "is Kirk doing the right thing in staying a fighting the creature?" to "holy cow his infallible intuition just saved the galaxy.

No thanks.

Kirk was participating in a form of nonverbal communication with the creature and interpreting those experiences. Kirk didn't simply intuit what he believed he understood from his imagination alone.
