The Daily Show Without Jon Stewart

I for one welcome our new South African news-satire overlord.

... Never heard of the guy before today, but based on a few clips I'm definitely optimistic: he seems like he has an upbeat, positive energy to soften the inevitable exasperation the job entails, and his foreign identity ought to free him to take a lot more surprised delight in our eccentricities than any fellow American plausibly could, and, in the wake of Stewart's departure, a bright and cheerful persona could go a long way toward avoiding a post-Jon slump. Congrats to him!

Haven't watched the Daily Show (or Colbert) in a couple years, so I've no idea who the new guy is. I'll tune in to see how it goes.

Tuned into the Nightly Show because I liked Wilmore's bits on the Daily Show. Liked it, so its now in my DVR's que.

My question is: how much of the writing staff will be following Senor Stewart out the door?

If not all right away, all within some short period of time.

To me that will be the biggest challenge facing the show. Mr. Noah won't be able to pull off the standard "That's outrageous" routine that Mr. Stewart has made his bread and butter for many years, so the new staff will have to find a voice for him that works and is distinctive yet somewhat familiar.

I watched TDS from its inception. When it first started out it was like a longer version of weekend updat, which appealed to me. I hated the host though. When Jon Stewart came on I was already a fan of his from his days at MTV. I watched all the way through the Bush years and probably all the way through maybe 2010/2011. My political views changed and I just didn't find it as funny since Stewart does have a clear bias. That being said, I never completely abandoned the show, I still tuned in from time to time. The same can be said for Colbert by the way. Now recently, I find myself tuning in more and more because Stewart is leaving. I still find him funny despite my awareness of his bias. I'm really enjoying Larry Wilmore's show as well, despite his bias. And @midnight is really, really funny. The point of my post though is this. I feel like Jon Stewart leaving is much like Carson leaving the Tonight Show. That being said, I feel that maybe Comedy Central should put TDS to bed. TDS is so much of Jon Stewart's creature that it's going to be hard to bring in a new host and still have the same type of format. Obviously CC needs a late night talk show in that place and I think it would be better to put Larry Wilmore in that spot and perhaps extend it to a full hour. That way you can have a good mixture of satire and comedy while still having panelist that discuss topics more in depth. I guess more like Bill Mahr. Then follow it up with @Midnight, which to me is a perfect follow up because it's not political or biased, it's just making fun of the stuff on the internet. that's the type of entertainment you need after watching a show about politics, especially since it is still Comedy Central. You don't want things to get too serious. But to me, I honestly believe that TDS needs to put to rest.

There's maybe a *slight* bias in Stewart but there's plenty of examples of him being critical towards Democrats and Obama.

Not nearly as much as there is for Republicans and Fox News.

well i don't see many examples of fox news being critical of the republicans. thats some *overt* bias going on there :P

as to the actual topic, i dislike trevor noah. his jokes aren't funny enough to counteract his mild smugness.

They should stop providing him so much material then.

Pretty much. They give him a lot of material. I mean. it's hard to not call them out when they're always ranting about things in contradiction to their own behavior.

I will give Stewart credit, he has called out Harry Reid for bitching about the Koch brothers when Reid also takes donations from billionaires.

Trevor Noah, Jon Stewart's 'Daily Show' replacement, faces Twitter backlash for offensive social media posts: Some of his social media missives were anti-Semitic in nature while others were sexist or otherwise offensive, reports claim.

(Note: For those of you who have trouble telling them apart, this is from the center-left NY Daily News, not the center-right NY Post)

Basically, he told jokes.

Yep. But we now live in a nation of pussies.

Sounds like something Ron Swanson would say.:)

Jon Stewart is also very critical of the 'Centrist' CNN.

I call them 'Centrist' in quotes because they're more like dual extremists. They report both sides' extremist manipulation without applying basic critical thinking to either.

I sincerely doubt that neither Jon Stewart nor anyone on a show like The Daily Show would have considered handing the reins over to someone without thoroughly vetting them.

While the jokes and tweets are not my style nor the kind I find amusing, there's a part of this that is just outrage for sake of outrage, and we'd all be much better off if we just dialed everything back a bit.
