The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Trailer is finally here

Shaka Zulu

Commodore
Commodore
...but I don't think that it's really U.N.C.L.E., though, since both Solo & Kuryakin are CIA and KGB spies who have to work together to stop what seems to be THRUSH from using a nuclear bomb as blackmail.

Here's the trailer anyway:

I'm delighted it's a 60s period piece!
As for the quality of the film itself, we'll have to wait and see.

I think the 60s setting is a good idea. It helps to differentiate this from Bond and Bourne and even SHIELD. Gives UNCLE its own style and flair. Kinda like the way AGENT CARTER gets a lot of mileage out of its retro, post-War setting.

^Well, I guess that I'll have to put up with it, as this is what Warner's wants.

Still, it would have been nice to see a modern-day upgrade of the UNCLE Special (a gun that fires different rounds depending on voice command), instantaneous real-time video communicators, and the like. Plus, it would have been great to see an upgraded THRUSH and maybe a movie plot similar to the plot of the SHIELD show.

But if SHIELD is already doing that plot, wouldn't you want to do something else instead?

I'm not sure "we need to make it more like that other show" is the way to go.

I'm very happy to see it set in the '60s. It seems like they want to stay truer to the style of the original. I'd hate to see this go the way of the updated "The Saint."

This looks fun, and I love that the Ilya Kuryakin character is going to be something of a badass and not just a brush-off sidekick.

I don't think it ever is!

(Does anybody else remember "Hollywood Heat"? - a blatant, pointless soulless ripoff of Miami Vice that choked on its own vomit after a few episodes)

EDIT - maybe I was thinking of "L.A. Heat" - IMDB says Hollywood heat was something else.
Or maybe I'm hallucinating again.

Well, if they are CIA and KGB, where does UNCLE come in? Really looking forward to this and hope they do justice to the original series. It will be interesting to see what type of technical gadgets they come up with though. Will it look like the 60s stuff or updated to reflect more of today's styling but in a 60s package?

I actually just watched the original show for the first time a couple weeks ago, so the timing of this is perfect. Looks like it could be a lot of fun.
I like the fact that this is set in the '60s. I had originally thought it was going to be modern day, and I was wondering how they were going to handle the whole US/Russia thing, when it wouldn't be a big deal post cold war.
As for the whole U.N.C.L.E. thing, I have a feeling this is going to be an origin story and at the end we'll probably see Solo and Kuryakin being recruited into a newly formed organization.

The trailer looks good.

Haven't checked out the IMDB listing yet. Are Vaughn and McCallum doing cameos?

I had the Illya Kuryakin action figure when I was a kid, probably about 5 years old. Wish I still had it. Funny, but I don't remember having any trouble pronouncing the name.

Then again, my grandmother used to tell the story that I would ask her questions about "Mr. Kennedy" and "Mr. Kruschev" around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. We used to watch the news and read the paper together.

^I'm not; this should be competing with S.H.I.E.L.D. and should be set in the current day.
Man From U.N.C.L.E. is Spy Vs. Spy in The Cold War. What would be the point of calling it that, if you updated?

Actually, on the Man From U.N.C.L.E. TV show, the Cold War didn't really feature that much except in a few episodes of the first season ('The Neptune Affair' and 'The Project Strigas Affair')-for most of the series, it was about stopping THRUSH and preventing miscreants from causing crap to happen, which mean that U.N.C.L.E. was like a global police force more than a spy organization.

As well, Man From U.N.C.L.E. was in competition with Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. even though the former was a TV show and the latter was a comic book, and both survived fine (not to mention being on the air opposite Get Smart, Mission: Impossible and The Avengers with little to no problems.) So why should a Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie being set in the current day have problems coexisting with a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show that's also set in the current day?

Ive never seen this show, I don't know anything about it, but this movie looks good and I love that it's set in the 60s.
