IDW Star Trek Ongoing...

if Orci doesn't write the script then how can the comics provide clues about the next movie or even have a 'prequel' of the next movie like they did with the countdown to darkness series?
Will the comics give us clues about what kind of movie Orci originally wanted to make? As the current script doesn't seem to be completed yet...

Because Orci is still producing the movie. So he's still in the loop.

^But is he still? I'm pretty sure I heard it was now a producer credit in name only, and that he's effectively off JJTrek3. However, I can't provide source. It may have just been idle message board chatter...

That doesn't mean he'd be forbidden from seeing the script or talking to Abrams, Burk, Pegg, etc. about it. When Roddenberry was reduced to "Executive Consultant" on the films post-TMP, he was still sent the scripts and allowed to offer notes (hence the "Consultant" part), even though he no longer had any decision-making power over the films.

Plus if its like the setting up for Into Darkness, it will likely be setting up some stuff for the 3rd movie plot without going into major details that requires Orci to have every draft of the script at hand.

Kind of like how the comics mostly focused on setting up Spock's post Vulcan issues coming to a head, the shady side of Starfleet, and (I think) Starfleet starting to have second thoughts about Kirk in command.

your review is too vague but I have looked at the preview. I really like the kirk and carol dialogue but I hope they do not make it predictable. as in they had a romance that resulted to a son in TOS so we should expect it again. I hope that is not the case. spock/uhura having a spat ....gosh do they fight all the time. I remember when kirk asked what their fighting was like in star trek 12? they need to stop fighting and do something else. like make out or have dinner?

I like how the first panel begins with checkov. Good,:techman: more of the other characters minus kirk and spock.

I am not sure if I will pick up this issue, I may have to wait for the part 2. the Q gambit was so long that it took me a while to collect the 6 issues.

I also have my xmen comics to buy so I have to budget my money for comics well. I don't want to buy an issue unless it is great or the art work is a steller.

I read the comics and there is no spock/uhura having a spat or 'fighting all the time' o_O
As for kirk/carol, like others said in other sites too it already is predictable there is no way around that.

*shrug* IDW has done stupid things like that before. The blurb for "Parallel Lives, Part 1" mentions Jane Kirk's crew facing a new enemy in deep space, but the story has no such thing.

I was replying to Dales comment but I now read the review saying
Not only this, but the story quickly glances over Carol Marcus with an off-duty Jim Kirk, a quick and brief spat with Spock and Uhura

What? jeez
They have one interaction where they are working and at one point she just teases him when she says that language isn't always logical that wasn't an argument unless Spock becomes very very touchy (and stupid)

One thing I dislike is that the artists of these comics (more in the last than the first) keep using screencaps from the movies as reference, which in theory is fine but not to the extent you just copy a screencap of one scene and add a compleyely different dialog to it. I think it's lazy to recycle other pictures instead of making new ones that fit with the dialog better.
With Spock, Uhura and Kirk it keeps happening. I guess the artist isn't inspired to draw them..

I agree with you, and that's the main reason I no longer keep up with the Ongoing series. The art is such a huge part of comics, and the Ongoing series keeps giving us contorted faces that I can't believe they didn't see fit to fix before going to print.

same. I'm not saying that the art is bad overall or that there aren't good pages, but one of the reasons why I'm interested in the comics is seeing the way artists draw the characters and create new scenes for them. I like to see their take and them making an effort recreating the characters and draw the right facial expressions with the dialog provided by the writer. This habit of using screencaps or stills from the movies is simply lazy and ends up ruining the best part of a comic.
I have to say I liked the artist who made the parallel lives comics, Yasmin Lang, better. She didn't seem to use that many existing pictures as reference and the characters had the right expressions for the dialogs. She clearly made the effort. Her female Spock for example was just priceless.

Issue #45, due out in May, will by "Eurydice, Part 3". Apparently, the Enterprise is still trapped in the Delta Quadrant, fighting the Dark Market syndicate.

I know that the covers usually provide no hints about the story but this one is interesting because it's full of references about vulcan like the IDIC symbol and the original vulcan planet, not new vulcan, since you can still see Vasquez Rocks.

these five years mission comics promise to be the first ones that give hints about the third movie but I somehow doubt that a bit due to the recent changes in the creative team
Even if Orci can definitely know about the new story (like you guys were saying before), it doesn't seem to be ready yet and even if they had a new script now my impression is that these comics are already written and done as the writer said he's now working on the ones that will get released at the end of the year.
So I still wonder if perhaps these comics will have clues about the original script Orci proposed..
either way it's possible the comics simply follow the safe route, so to speak, and don't introduce any story that will contradict the third movie.
