Star Trek: Axanar

Nice looking building...'twill be interesting to see what Alec Peters has got planned to film there beyond the main Axanar production. More web-based productions of all types of genres? opening a SPFX facility for subcontracting work?

Both New Voyages and STC have roughly 11,000sf facilities, each with a full set of TOS sets, and The Oklahoma group has a bridge (formerly from Exeter).

Officially, our New Voyages/Phase II newly-acquired studio space comes in at 13,000 square feet. As wonderful as 13,000 square feet is, I'm sure that Area Studio's 16,000 square feet is impressive and will enable some fine productions.

At 16,000sf it is the largest facility dedicated to non-studio Trek, and the only one on the West Coast. It will be very interesting to see the sets they come up with, which they plan to keep up and use for their film cool and convention.

Star Trek classic is alive and well with fandom.

Hmm. The signage is very clearly photoshopped on the side of the building, as comparable to this image Alec shared from the Axanar Fan group Facebook page when he first announced the acquisition of this space:

Still, as I said earlier, it looks like it'll be a great space to house the Axanar production and will hopefully be put to its maximum potential to serve their needs.

The Photoshoppery was so obvious I suspect it wasn't intended to look real. ILM never had a sign on their buildings in San Rafael so as not to invite break-ins, so you really probably wouldn't want a big sign advertising the contents. ;)

Alec had the following comment in his Axanar website:

"(Oh and it really doesn’t say 'Ares Studios' on the building yet. That is just clever photo-shop!)"

It's so cool that so many people are doing this and that they're allowed to.

Rather a statement of the obvious, but sometimes I just have to say it.

My bad for not posting that the photo was a photoshopped. I assumed it was pretty obvious to anyone.

Hey wait! They just got stained glass in!

Nice! I even like the signage.

That's probably the most liberal use of the word "clever" that I've ever seen.

So just one more cheap shot at Alec. Do you ever stop? Is hijacking this thread with your animosity your only joy in life?

It was a snarky remark from doubleohfive, nothing more. At least, I thought it was funny. He hasn't hijacked anything, yet.

BTT: That's a rather large area. So that might be another place, where SF dreams may come true (besides P2 and STC). If the results meet the expectations then we're in to another fan feast.

It astonishes me how even the simplest little jape can go misunderstood and mischaracterized as if it were some kind of vicious attack. Thank you for being a voice of reason and understanding, wtriker1701.

I would tend to agree. Axanar's stated goals have been that they would train other actors, fan filmmkaers, producers, et al at their facility for a price but by using their facilities to do so. It will certainly be interesting to see what kinds of productions will come out of this arrangement. If I were to hazard a guess, I'm thinking that what will probably happen is they'll convert their main stage to house a recreation of the TOS bridge for use by other fan films here in Los Angeles, akin to what Starbase Studios has done. Maybe, maybe not. But it's a possibility.

Or they'll come up with whatever bridge set they need for USS Ares and then if they don't need to use that ship anymore, they can paint it, move a few bits around, and use it as a generic starship from the 2240s so that everyone isn't using the same Constitution-class bridge for all projects.

You're right, that would certainly seem to be the more practical way to go.

I seem to recall Alec however being really proud of the fact that he'd be opening the largest facility on the West coast for STAR TREK fan films, and that his stated goal (at least as late as 2013, anyway) was that it would be for a TOS style bridge. I freely admit that I'm not associated with the films and this is all observation/recollection/speculation on my part though.

There was a time when the plan was for a TOS bridge which would then be re-dressed for an Ares bridge for use in Axanar, but that was quite some time ago and I suspect their plans have changed. I have no inside information either.

Edit: not only the bridge but other sets as well were originally meant to be TOS style, IIRC.

The style might fit Pike's era rather than Kirk's. But given the time for Axanar, (around the time USS Enterprise is launched/commissioned), USS Ares would have a different configuration for her bridge. An April era bridge almost. The last plan I saw had more consoles up front was this was designed as a combat ship, seemingly with the need to coordinate with other starships in battle, or across a wider range of space since the war covers a lot of Federation space.

The outcome will probably be something like a mix between the Pike era TOS bridge and the Archer era ENT bridge, with maybe some flavoring of the USS Kelvin thrown in by the builders and designers.
