Star Trek: Axanar

with respect: might i suggest controlling the thread, rather than killing it?

(otherwise, the negatively motivated people get what they want?)

I seriously wonder, what happens to some fanatics, if their so desired project fails to deliver? Will they be just protecting/defending or going to fight back so hard, some noses might bleed?
AXANAR might or might not be The Holy Grail of fan filming, as at least one person believes it to be. But, still, there is such a very huge gap between wishful thinking and reality when it comes to AXANAR being produced as a series for CBS.

And it doesn't help matters, if anybody shouts: "WAIT.FOR.IT! SOON! END.OF.NEXT.MONTH!" As long as such fantasies keep going on without ANY indication or proof, topics like this one keep derailing...

The same basic reason that there are still people pushing for new seasons of Enterprise. Still, I would love to see Axanar flourish into a full on series. It has an interesting enough premise. It's just incredibly unlikely, nearly impossible, to see it become a show picked up by CBS, or even sponsored by CBS.

...about a hundred years ago, people thought it was *IMPOSSIBLE* for man to fly...

NOTHING is impossible =D

(until you limit yourself)

Oh, some things are absolutely impossible, like reversing entropy, supply side econonics, and getting Trek fans to come to a consensus. :D

You might even say nigh on impossible. I say that because I wanted to use "nigh" in a sentence, and this was the best way.

^ Completely agreed! When I was younger, and perhaps a bit more naive, I would have accepted the notion as well. I remember when Enterprise was coming back for a 5th season, and that CBS had accepted the outpouring of money and ideas from the fans!

Slogging through the last few pages was hard enough, but THIS paragraph just jumped out at me...I had washed my hands of anything Trek after the first season of Enterprise so I wasn't following what became of it...

But SERIOUSLY? There were people foolish enough to send their hard-earned money to a billion-dollar corporation?!

Returning to Axanar, the only thing I am wondering about as the cast and crew get ready for what surely will be at least a year of production work, is what the overall aesthetic look will be, the cinematography if you will.

Will the choice of lighting and colour texture follow that established in TOS (60s bright lighting with rich bold colours as seen in the CAGE), or will it be murkier colours with dark shadows as seen on the Enterprise tv series, or perhaps even an amalgalm of BOTH, since the time period for Axanar is effectively inbetween?

When looking at the live-action shots for Prelude to Axanar, you could see they were going for similar to TOS but with more shadowplay and more modern lighting, but since that film is technically a documentary set within that universe, they have leeway to present a different aesthetic look for AXANAR proper.

What will they go for? The harsher more sterile look used by Michael Bay for Transformers? The washed-out look with barely -seen colour used by Zach Snyder for Man of Steel?
The pure candy-coated look from TOS' second season?

Personally I would really like either the stark look with clear lighting/almost no shadows used by Stanley Kubrick for 2001, A Space Odyssey, with no sound effects in space at all, though since they are clearly going for big, bold phaser/explosion SFX that probably won't happen.

Another one I really miss is the early 90s style used most effectively by the amazing Adrian Biddle for James Cameron's ALIENS film, sharp but realistic colour with that most fascinating use of blue for all their nighttime/darkness scenes.

Alec Peters and Christian Gossett seem to be going for TOS style but gritty, or they may go for something entirely different, so we'll have to wait and see what they have planned.

Not related to Axanar, but think back to where Cameron came from, his family and his early career before The Terminator and you'll understand why his approach and what he looks for in a core crew is better than what many of these overrated "music video directors" put on the big screen.

Getting back to this fan production - I don't get it - it seems to represent the worse of old trek in that it's a lot of old dudes sitting around and some very well rendered but largely uninteresting space battles - is the full length thing meant to be more of the same?

(Great production values however).

I keep trying to tell people that '12 Angry Men' is just a bunch of dudes sitting in a room, and 'Glengarry Glen Ross' is just a bunch of salesmen yelling at each other. Yet funnily enough they don't seem to be impressed by my reasoning.
