^ Completely agreed! When I was younger, and perhaps a bit more naive, I would have accepted the notion as well. I remember when Enterprise was coming back for a 5th season, and that CBS had accepted the outpouring of money and ideas from the fans!
Slogging through the last few pages was hard enough, but THIS paragraph just jumped out at me...I had washed my hands of anything Trek after the first season of Enterprise so I wasn't following what became of it...
But SERIOUSLY? There were people foolish enough to send their hard-earned money to a billion-dollar corporation?!
Returning to Axanar, the only thing I am wondering about as the cast and crew get ready for what surely will be at least a year of production work, is what the overall aesthetic look will be, the cinematography if you will.
Will the choice of lighting and colour texture follow that established in TOS (60s bright lighting with rich bold colours as seen in the CAGE), or will it be murkier colours with dark shadows as seen on the Enterprise tv series, or perhaps even an amalgalm of BOTH, since the time period for Axanar is effectively inbetween?
When looking at the live-action shots for Prelude to Axanar, you could see they were going for similar to TOS but with more shadowplay and more modern lighting, but since that film is technically a documentary set within that universe, they have leeway to present a different aesthetic look for AXANAR proper.
What will they go for? The harsher more sterile look used by Michael Bay for Transformers? The washed-out look with barely -seen colour used by Zach Snyder for Man of Steel?
The pure candy-coated look from TOS' second season?
Personally I would really like either the stark look with clear lighting/almost no shadows used by Stanley Kubrick for 2001, A Space Odyssey, with no sound effects in space at all, though since they are clearly going for big, bold phaser/explosion SFX that probably won't happen.
Another one I really miss is the early 90s style used most effectively by the amazing Adrian Biddle for James Cameron's ALIENS film, sharp but realistic colour with that most fascinating use of blue for all their nighttime/darkness scenes.

Alec Peters and Christian Gossett seem to be going for TOS style but gritty, or they may go for something entirely different, so we'll have to wait and see what they have planned.
