Which is the BEST episode of Voyager??

It only happens once is bullshit.

It only happens once naturally, but it happens artificially from a spray can every Thursday night.

(Did I have an original thought?)

Can't single out any particular episode. Some of my top favorites:

Projections
The Thaw
Worst Case Scenario
Waking Moments
Living Witness
Timeless
Bride of Chaotica
Bliss
Blink of an Eye
Shattered

OH CAPTAIN SHOULD I HAVE A BABY SHOULD I HAVE ONE NOW I'M SCARED HOLD ME

ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, KES.

You spend 4 posts to ridicule that episode!

"Elogium" isn't my favorite but it isn't that bad. There were episodes much worse.

teacock, the fact that Elogium provokes such a visceral reaction from you says more about you than it does about its quality.

Real Life was a great idea for an episode but I felt the ending was a bit contrived. Like, they could have made a more profound point by not jumping to the most extreme scenario.

How is the death of a child due to a brain injury "the most extreme scenario"?

If we're going to get picky about semantics, sure, Earth getting sucked into a black hole would be far more extreme. Death of a child is the most emotionally extreme logical consequence of family dynamics.

To me the problem with Elogium is that the implications on Ocampan sexuality weren't respected in any other script.

The hosts of Trek.Fm's To the Journey podcast reminded me of yet another reason why I love Elogium: "It appears we have lost our sex appeal, Captain".

Elogium is very embarrassing to watch.

I'll elaborate also. The writhing desk dancing sweaty Kes in the doctor's office.

It's interesting to see the reproductive process concept but this was a mess to me. Perhaps too alien if not illogical.

Yes, it had fun bridge character interchanges I'll give you that and the important topic "crew reproduction"but not a top ep in my eye. I am glad you so bravely stated your choice otherwise what's the point of all of us chatting if we all agreed unanimously all the time? :-)

Definitely not an episode I'd show someone who wasn't a fan of Star Trek. It isn't an episode I'd show to someone who is a fan of Star Trek.

But then I find the whole Kes/Neelix relationship pretty wrong. I don't think they really thought through the whole "I'm only two, bang me now" aspect of the episode.

Elogium was the first episode that made me (and Captain Janeway) realize just how good looking Chakotay was.

My fav line?

Its obvious.

JANEWAY: Good work, Commander. In the future, if I have any questions about mating behavior, I'll know where to go.

(His look at her after this comment was priceless. :p )

I think the real reason Teacake doesn't like this ep, is that she too realized how hot Chakotay was in that ep, and she resists the truth.

My problem with "Elogium" is how the Ocampa was ruined as a species in that episode.

It was not enough with the unrealistic lifespan. Here comes even more. Ocampa can have only one child per lifetime, Ocampa females freak out and eat beetles, they got sticky fingers, have to have sex for a couple of days (or hours, or whatever it was) and before that one of the woman's parents must massage her feet until her tongue swells!

And they deliver their child from the back!

Talk about ruining a species. Sometimes I wonder if the "writers" were on something when they came up with that.

^ On top of all that, they have some type of telepathic sense and telekinetic ability.

I've decided to 'bite the bullet' and mention an episode that is probably going to get me a ton of eye-rolls in response:
Elogium

I almost put it on my previous list as either my pick for the best episode of Season 1 (which it was produced for) or Season 2 (when it aired), but decided to instead go with Eye of the Needle and Alliances, respectively. It's a really good episode for both Ethan Phillips and Jennifer Lien, and really shows the depth of the relationship between Neelix and Kes; it's also a really nice example of how Trek successfully does metaphor.

I really like Alliances. It's one of the better early season and one of the few times they actually engage with the original concept of the show.

You're right...he should have spent 10 posts ridiculing it. Just terrible dreck.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, so please elaborate.

In any script other than Elogium, Kes is treated like any other eligible female love interest whose sexuality works the same as any human, klingon or vulcan. Her different mating practices suggest that attraction should work differently for Ocampans than other races.

@Lynx

I don't see how showing that Ocampans are actually biologically different from humans ruins the race. I agree with the 'One child per lifetime' thing, since the math just doesn't work out with that one. But you seem to be saying that showing Ocampans in a way that makes the females less sexually appealing to human males 'Ruins' the race. There should be more Star Trek races whose reproductive process is gross to humans. They are alien races, after all.
