Agents of SHIELD - Season 2 Discussion Threads. (Spoilers Likely)

I'm still trying to figure out how turning into asphalt makes you and immovable object cable of totaling a presumably armored SUV.

First of all, doubt the SUV was armored. Given the state of SHIELD and Coulson's inability to use the bus and trials to get a cloak it's unlikely those SUVs were anything but off-the-lot models, certainly not to armored/AI/flying one we saw in Winter Soldier.

It would seem that Absorbing Man takes on the properties of whatever object he happens to morph into (hence the appeal of the gem he was offered, him thinking making his hand rubber would make him immune to the obelisk's properties (though it didn't we can infer he's used rubber body parts (or any other material) in the past to interact with materials that would otherwise be harming.) I suppose this extends to standard-issue fiction shape-shifting where mass/density shifting occurs.

So he didn't just turn into the appearance of asphalt/concrete he turned into a large chunk of it which would weigh a few hundred pounds probably close to a ton, much more than a man at any rate. Crash your car going at-speed into even a K-Rail/highway divider and you're going to wreck your car.

Toss in the trope common in movies with impacts often being way more severe and having greater reactions than in real-life and what happened between the SUV and Absorbing Man adds up.

True, but I think half the concern is how the chunk of asphalt would make out. I didn't watch the effects on Creel that closely-- did anyone see whether he lost any pieces? He really should have. (Although the comics version can put himself back together.)

I really like how Mack dealt with Fitz-- while everybody else was walking on eggshells, Mack treated him like a person and brought him out. Mack is just the kind of friend he needs.

Yeah, it's telling that he didn't realize Simmons was gone. It seems that no one at all has tried to approach the subject with him before and tell him he's talking to himself and they're said that Simmons is gone.
Which is very realistic. They're his friends, so it's their instinct to be gentle with him. Sometimes it takes an outsider to give somebody the slap upside the head they need.

I also liked Hunter's arc. All he cared about was making sure that Izzy got a decent burial and that the families of the dead were provided for.

Looked to me like he was very interested in revenge, too.
That's true, but that's standard. It was his humanistic motivations that made him interesting.

I thought that, near the end of the first episode, Coulson said that Simmons leaving is what broke him. I took this to mean that Fitz was aware of Simmons leaving, but then he rejected the reality that she's gone.

It may be. I guess it's subject to interpretation. Of course, just because he was aware of it at the time doesn't mean he continues to be aware of it. But if he denied talking to Simmons when Mack asked, I guess it's likely he's aware.

If he merged with the road, it was like one asphalt hill.
Asphalt is quite soft and flexible, and breaks apart easily. The concrete underneath is hard.
A human-shaped asphalt statue would break from a good kick.

He wasn't touching asphalt/concrete, he was touching asphalt. If you had ever done any road work with a shovel you would appreciate how soft it is.

All that said, his power is mystical in nature so I can pretend it isn't just what he touched on the surface.

Although he looked like he turned the color of concrete. Maybe there was a gap in the asphalt?

Asphalt is soft, but road asphalt actually has a lot of ingredients; he probably picked up the appearance of asphalt and the characteristics of all of them. Either that or the writers just didn't know any better. :rommie:

^It's comic book logic, I wouldn't expend too much effort trying to explain it. Personally I thought the "glass = invisible" thing was far less credible. ;)

^Not to mention opening the door to prove he's not in there after sending to other guy away and the fact there wasn't a camera near any of them. Regardless, I still liked it.

I'm just wondering who in comic book history thought "Absorbing Man" was a good, cool name. I'm pretty much glad the show uses his "real" name--"Creel" sounds cooler than "Absorbing Man".

I mean, "The Absorber" sounds better, or even "Elemental Man" (that flows--it rolls off the tongue, as opposed to "Absorbing Man"...).

Would you prefer... Absorbaloff? XD

They did call him the Absorbing Man once. Personally, I think Absorbing Man sounds better than Absorber, although I'll agree it's not a great name no matter what. Crusher Creel is an awesome name, though, so it evens out.

Deduced from the final act of "Heavy is the Head":
If I go by the funeral service, Hartley was USMC before she joined SHIELD. Maybe?

Also: the Playground has a support staff beyond Koenig and Mac. For the hangar and the lab.
