‘Superman & Batman’ movie will follow ‘Man of Steel’

I don't imagine it took too long after the MoS reviews and box office came in before they started thinking of ways to get Batman in there.

Not that it didn't do well or wasn't a good film in its own right - but I'm sure they imagined greater.

 

^ It's that foreign BO BvS needs to get more of next time. Compare the grosses of the following films.

Captain America TWS
Domestic: $259,545,867
Foreign: $454,317,000

Superman out did both Capt and Thor domestically but came up short internationally. This with TWS and TDW being the second solo film of both Capt and Thor. As well as being their 3rd theatrical appearance when you include Avengers. Without a doubt BvS will be bigger. Not just domestically but internationally. Now that the market is acquainted with the franchise, there will be a larger demand to see a MOS sequel.


Also MOS sold more copies on Blu-ray and DVD than IM3. Iron Man being the highest grossing comic book movie of 2013. It was the highest grossing film of 2013 before Frozen came out on Nov 27 2013. Although a large part of Frozen's BO probably came in during 2014.

So the MOS franchise definitely has legs and room to improve. It's just fighting an uphill battle for relevancy in a market dominated by Marvel, Fox (X-Men) and Sony (Spider-Man).

 

Yeah at least the MOS franchise still feels like it has someplace exciting to go. Unlike the rebooted Spidey franchise which already felt completely tired and stale right out of the gate.

 

That might be in part because there's only been two Superman movies in the past 20 years or so, only 1 of which was an origin story. We've had like 5 Spiderman movies in... how long? 2002? Ugh.

 

Say what you want about MOS, but think about this: we could have had the Burton/Cage version instead.

 

Burton's "Superman Lives" would've been a Planet of the Apes (2001) cluster fuck.

JJ Abrams was attached to a Superman project called "Superman Flyby" in 2004. As fate would have it, Henry Cavil and allegedly Amy Addams both auditioned for the roles of Supes and Lois in that flick; only to ultimately be cast several years later.


Can you imagine a JJ Superman film? I think we missed out on that one. WB ultimately decided to go with Singer's script, that became "Superman Returns". Singer chose to go with Brandon Routh over Henry because of the former's resemblance to Chris Reeve.

 

I've read some of the stuff that WB/DC went through to get us to where we are today.

I recently watched Kevin Smith's talk about his experience with WB, Jon Peters, and Tim Burton. That is some funny stuff (even if it is probably embellished a bit).

 

What are the specifics? What makes its world more romanticized or comic booky? Is it just the existence of Superman?

 

I take that to mean that SR was intended to be a direct sequel to Superman II, keeping with the Silver Age tone of the Reeve films. The Nolan films don't mesh with that very well.

 

Well being a JJ fan (despite my distaste for STID), I think he probably would have made a really good Superman film. It would certainly be much more colorful and visually dynamic than either Singer's or Snyder's movie, I bet.

Although from interviews he's given since, it sounds like he probably would have explored the same basic themes as those two movies, with a Superman questioning if he truly wants to be humanity's savior, etc.

 

Not only that, but there was the golden hued cinematography and the soft, romantic score and the art deco style design...

All stuff that you couldn't imagine existing anywhere near the gritty world of TDK.

 

Exactly. All that stuff.

 

JJ wouldn't have directed it, though - he just wrote the script. McG or Brett Ratner were going to direct it.

 

Or to something like Superman II. The specifics of SR don't precisely match up with either version of Superman II.

 

Oh yikes. Well in that case, never mind!!

 

While a JJ/McG Superman movie sounds great in theory, the leaked script about a living Krypton and Lex Luthor being an evil Kryptonian just sounded horrible.

 

Hmm, looks like I might have been right about people putting the blame on Superman for Zod coming to Earth in the first place. Which I'm perfectly fine with, because in the real world you can be sure people would be suspicious or resentful of Superman's presence no matter how much good he did or didn't do.

And I like that Snyder is continuing to explore the idea in that way, instead of having everyone just automatically embrace him from the get go.

I'm glad that they will deal with the aftermath of the end of MOS. I didn't mind it, but it is a pretty big thing to ignore.
