Please explain.
DSC is three letters, Discovery is is 9. That is 3 times the chances for my autocorrect to decide I mean something else like delivery or discrimination .
Because for first few seasons it wasn't Star Trek. They went out of their way to call it just Enterprise. Calling something STE that didn't have Star Trek in the title would be silly. So it became ENT.
But in case of STD, it makes the most perfect sense. Star Trek Discovery
Let's take a look at all abbreviations:
TOS - a weird one to be sure, started probably only after TNG appeared (right?)
TNG - It would be weird to call it STTNG, so TNG stuck as it was more pronounceable
DS9 - easy, Deep Space 9
VOY - STV for some reason didn't take, wasn't around the forums then, not sure the reason, but I suppose people just liked the sound of VOY, And you'll still find some people sticking with VGR
ENT - see my point above, STE wasn't valid
STD - easy, Star Trek Discovery. Easy to say, easy to type. Just a natural fit.
The ONLY reason people don't universally use STD is because it also stands for Sexually Transmitted Decease. So are Star Trek fans so immature that they can't say STD with a straight face?

So apparently ST is the most "natural" abbreviation, but there were always exceptions:
TOS - not STTOS because it was the first
TNG and DS9 - not STTNG/STDS9 because... weird / not easy?
VOY - not STV because "some reason"
ENT - not STE because ST wasn't on the title originally
DSC - not STD only because fans are too immature to say it with a straight face
You know, if every single occurrence bucks the trend, maybe a simpler explanation is that the trend doesn't actually exist.
It's telling that one poster, whom I won't name, who has insistently argued in this thread that STD is the "correct" abbreviation also happens to be a regular detractor of the show on these forums. It is certainly much more common in those circles, although I'm not saying these are the only people who use it. After all, I have seen STTNG and STV a handful of times as well.
For me, it was always DIS (following Memory Alpha convention), which happens to be the lowest on this poll. But I'm not going to argue that the 90% are wrong or immature because they don't follow me. That's not how language works. The fact that DSC has gained more traction means it is the natural form. Doesn't matter what I think, or you, or even the producers (even though they agree).

You know what I think? It kills the fans (pro) that Discovery is shortened to STD. I don't do it because I have a stick up my butt and it annoys me when I abbreviate. I find myself writing TOS and I cringe. I also cringe because the Original Series is Star Trek just like 'A New Hope' is Star Wars. Revisionist abbreviations are the worse

STD does not fit the format used by TOS, TNG,DS9, VOY or ENT. And DIS is Disney.

I typed that months ago, to explain the reason why I personally don't use the abbreviation DIS. A reason I decided several months even earlier, before I even came back here as a regular poster at the end of 2017. It was something I couldn't get out of my mind. I don't care if other people call it that, however. It doesn't even register on my radar if people call it DIS.
STD on the other hand, is the one I take notice of. Though I don't mind if people call it that either, but for a different reason. It's NOT a perfect gauge but a rough gauge to see where people stand since it's more commonly (which doesn't mean exclusively) used by people who don't like the show, in the absence of any other context in a post. So, if the rest of the post doesn't indicate they'd be a basher: i.e. "STD is great!", then I know they're not using STD in a negative fashion. But in the majority of situations I've seen, this doesn't seem to be the case.
So, unlike other posters here who want bashers, haters, or detractors to stop calling the show "STD", I actually want them to keep calling it STD. Since it can be such a good shorthand for the message they want to convey.

Yeah but in the context of a Star Trek discussion, people aren't going to think Discovery Channel or Walt Disney are being referenced.
You know, that is actually the main reason why I don't use STD!
Because I really wasn't a fan of the first season, and I don't want to come across as bullying. If I were to actually like the show a great deal, I'd absolutely call it STD, the puberty minded grown-up that I am!
The only "real" format is "three letters", and that it should be unambiguos. It's nice if they refer to the words in the title, but not even hat is really a hard rule ("TOS"). "STD" fits that definition just perfectly. "DIS" fits that as well (because we're just talking about shows, not companies). "DSC" is the only one that I think doesn't really do that, because it's really only one letter (aka one typo) away from DS9 or DSN - and since that is already a little ambiguous - the only constant being "DS" - I don't want another "DSx" to confuse the situation.
Thus I'm going to stay with "DIS".
So then, I should be upset that other folks use different abbreviations? That doesn't make much sense, since most people do.
