I'm on nights, so plan to do my last minute Christmas grocery shopping early tomorrow morning. The local Tesco's (usually 24 hours) is only open from midnight until 5pm on the 24th, so I guess it's a 2am trip to the shops for me. At least I should avoid the crowds! :)

I have bought what must be thé cutest board game in the history of cuteness:

Paniek in de wei! (a.k.a. Shear Panic!)

^ Oh, I want one! *swoons from cuteness*

6 first class stamps and a bar of Green & Black's organic chocolate. I like my corner shop, you can get anything there.

AdAstra, I played that game, and it's lots of fun!

I purchased for myself:
- Transformers 2 DVD
- Diecast Model Corgi 1:72 B-25 Mitchell Limited Edition of 2000

Christmas gifts:
- Book, Sword of Truth: Wizards First Rule in Dutch
- DVD, Pink Floyd, Live In Berlin
- DVD, Pittige Tijden (dutch kids show)
- DVD, Simon & Garfunkel
- USB2.0 -> IDE (PATA/SATA) converter

Half Life 2 Orange Box for my little bro.
Guild Wars: Eye of the North and Sims2: Seasons for my sister in law.
A Yogurt maker for my wife (yeah, harsh, but she REALLY wanted one)
Sesame Street Old School 2 for my son.

And a die cast Galactica for me. :D ('twas the last left, and no one would/could buy those for me)

So....

I just got back from doing my last-minute Christmas grocery shopping. And boy, was I wrong about missing the crowds. I'm telling you, Christmas makes people behave funny.

The store was due to open at midnight. I had to go into work on a call just before, so got there about 10 minutes after midnight. The store was PACKED. Like a busy Saturday morning. People wheeling trolleys around, filled with hams, turkey, bread, etc, etc. It looked like they were prepping for the apocalypse. And remember, this is the middle of the night in an out-of-town shopping centre.

When did people start planning to go shopping at midnight? I remember when working nights and going shopping in the early hours meant bumping into the odd other shift worker or night owl. Tonight was like a family day out for some people!

I was chatting to the cashier while paying and she said they had no idea it was going to be THIS busy. They expected a few people to have spotted the early opening and tried to beat the rush, but nothing like what it was.

Everyone else looked a bit stunned to see so many other people there. It threw people enough that they were all actually quite good-natured and festive, but still!

Anyway, I'm now fully stocked myself to last the holiday season. :D

^ I wish I'd had enough sense to do that (I normally shop for what I need day to day), if there aren't any nearby decent food shops open tomorrow, I'm screwed!

You should be OK provided you shop before about 5pm, though you may have to define decent broadly enough to include all the chain supermarkets. :D

Some of the big chains may open later, but my local Tesco shuts at 5pm and it's a big 24hr one, so I wouldn't gamble on it.

Tesco do crazy hours, I know. Would love it if I had a large store here... Nearest thing (significant because I don't use a car) to me is Marks and Sparks. Good for most things, but their frozen food section is somewhat pitiful, the fresh meat produce goes off very quickly.

We just had a new M&S Simply Food open near me. Just opposite the Tesco's in fact. It's wonderful to live near an M&S again - their fresh food is still some of the best. And with Tesco's opposite, the two shops really complement each other nicely.

Mind you, the M&S is wreaking havoc on my Tesco Clubcard points balance...

If only I had a Waitrose round the corner, my life would be complete!

The one thing I really miss about moving to Canada is Tesco - I had a 24-hour superstore near me and Tesco.com online grocery shopping is the best!

The online service is indeed very good. I've returned to going to the shop myself again though. The online system works very well for staple items, esp heavy stuff. But it's harder to pick out "occasional treats" without the visual suggestion created by walking the aisles. The online system is certainly better on the wallet though, again because you don't buy lots of those "occasional treats"!

Needs insulin shot from the cuteness. Whoops, the problem isn't the cuteness but rather the Christmas cookies and peppermint bark...

And so go the best laid plans of mice and men... ;)

The good news is it's snowing here today! The bad news is my sister and her family are currently sitting in Chicago waiting for their delayed flight to Minneapolis so I'm eating sugar to stay awake enough to be able to hop in the car and get them when they finally get in. At least that's my excuse...

What's this thread about again? Oops, I bought nothing today but at least my parents made it through the storm so we were able to start in on the food I bought yesterday - pesto lasagne. :)
