Your CBS series ideas

I want to wait and see how Picard and DSC season 3 do before I give the interwebs my 'updated' wishlist. Part of me feels it's time for Star Trek to just stick with a late 24th century/early 25th century setting for awhile (like Picard).
But I'm also really intrigued by the idea of advancing the timeline almost 1,000 years further as where we seem to be going for season 3 in Discovery. So many possibilities for new shows in that time-frame.

I"d like to see a Star Trek mini-series that takes place in the 21st Century, immediately after or very shortly after First Contact, where the primary setting is Earth. Zephram Cochrane and Lily would make interesting leads.

I'd love an alt-history 1970-90's Eugenics Wars series. Technological breakthoughs, a race of supersoldiers who grow up to be leaders and peacekeepers. Khan takes over. Nuclear war (which was the 1990's in some episodes of TOS, so there's precedent) and the launch of the sleeper ships.

Cast Benedict Cumberbatch as adult Khan just to annoy everyone.

I think ... with all the CBSAA thing and the re-merging between Viacom and CBS, that this is a perfect time to revisit the unfinished story of Enterprise, Archer & Co.
A couple of movies or a couple of seasons to finish all those stories that we heard about.

Pitch your idea for a new television show in the Star Trek universe. Don't forget to include a theme, a name for the show, and the setting, including timeline.

My idea: Star Trek meets the Twilight Zone in terms of structure. Take a season, 15 episodes, and spend it with new characters, settings, and have them change every year. My theme would be exploration. Settings would include a planet and it's politics with regards to building an engine that breaks the light barrier, the space station where a new discovery of a natural resource may make every corner of the universe able to be explored, the world where slavery and destruction of the planet fuels their exploration, a Starship, the last remnants of a once great civilization, continues to explore the galaxy, a hospital where they must treat the victims of a plague brought back to them by their explorers, and that's the beginning. Called "Star Trek: Exploration" it visits the strange, new worlds that the song talks about, peels back the layers of the upside, and downside, of space exploration, as a way of life. It doesn't warp off after the end of the show, and to pump new life into the rich tapestry, it never involves the iconic races--the Romulans, Bajorans, Borg, etc. This is a completely new show relying on acting, storytelling to re-build the franchise.

This was more or less what Bryan Fuller wanted Discovery to be before CBS vetoed it.

The problem with this from a network perspective is they need to build an entire new main set each year, which is very expensive compared to an ongoing show which can keep the bridge, corridor, engineering, and other sets all the way through its run. Having standing sets allows Trek to do "bottle shows" and keep overall costs low.

A way around this might be to structure an anthology show so that you never actually see the main ship. Basically every episode begins with "beaming down" or landing in a shuttlecraft.

A Trek series set within the ranks of the ships assigned to patrol the borders of the Federation, police space lanes, and safeguard the lives of Federation citizens. This crew isn't one of explorers, they aren't going to get much recognition for the hard work that they do, but they go out and face some of the toughest jobs possible in order to safeguard those in need or defend Federation assets from threats of all description. This crew is made up of the good, the bad, and the indifferent, from those who could have exception careers if they so desired to those that no one else wants on their ship, all working together for the good of others. The series would have more of the gritty realism and character development of DS9, with greater focus given to character interaction and relationships, these are people that live and work together in close quarters and often have to think on their feet and devise makeshift solutions with little at hand. The ship would have a few light-years on the clock, suited for her role, with a compact and practical design, she may be a little scuffed and dinged, but she gets the job done.

They could call it Star Trek: Away Team

One thing to note though, is that is seems like they are going for the anthology approach across shows. Currently there is DSC, PIC and S39 and 2 animated ones. PIC is 3 years tops and if things are still going well it will be replaced with another show. If each is significantly different from the other then there is an anthology of series' rather than an anthology series.

Instead of a Earth-bound Academy, there's are small academy ships.

The idea is that the best form of training is on the job training, kind of like what we saw with the Jedi. Small groups of cadets are attached to a young officer and sent on series of diverse missions.

The missions could be combat, science, search and rescue, diplomacy, law enforcement, intelligence, etc..

...why not both? ;)

I think an Academy series should start "Earth-bound" - since that's how Starfleet Academy was portrayes so far in every iteration of Trek. But it doesn't have to stay there - in my imagination, there should also be a training vessel (like most Navy's today have), extended "training missions" - though usually nearer to home turf/inside Federation territory. And hell, in the last seasons, this show might even transform into a sort of "lower decks" show, where (some) cadets (the main characters) get transferred to serve on an active-duty starship.

Really, an "Academy show" has great potential - it just comes down to the execution.

Star Trek did it brilliantly in DS9, giving the series a more grounded, real feel to the setting and characters. It's part of what makes DS9 the best series.
And is what Section 31 and DSC is constantly beat about the head for daring to have. So, no, I don't believe people want it and if it happens it will be decried for "not Gene's vision!". I think they want DS9 back.

Section 31 was a weak point of DS9. As for discovery, can't possibly say. Bringing it back (or even just Behr and Braga) that would be amazing!

It won't be the same and it will get condemned like DSC is for being "dark" and "gritty" and the like.

I don't believe for a second that DS9 coming back would be welcomed with open arms because it won't be the same.
