Your annual vacation/holidays

If I ever showed up in public dressed like that, I would cause everyone present to jump into the sea, just to get away from the horror.

When we all went down to Mexico for my brother's wedding, we stayed at a resort (Riviera Maya). I'm just a big-city vacationer and have little experience with beaches - I didn't have any swim gear or anything like that - so I wore my street clothes when we went to the beach one time. My sister-in-law cracked up at that. :alienblush:

But dude said he wasn’t much of a beach goer, he’ll be shopping, sightseeing and dining. ;) T-shirt and jeans should be fine for that.

On another hand, My friend’s husband sat on the beach wearing a black T-shirt, black jeans and black work boots down in Savannah in the dead of August. He really didn’t want to go but went reluctantly.

Beaches aren't all they are cracked up to be, but then again I live a 5 minute drive from the coast, so for me there is nothing special about them. The last beach I was on was something like 4 years ago which was Venice beach.

The only beach I regularly visit is Coney Island. I like walking up and down the boardwalk, visiting the bars, going out onto the pier, that type of thing.

I do NOT take part in the hot dog eating contest, though, because....ew. :wtf:

My sister and I stayed at an all-inclusive resort called Catalonia Riviera Maya in Puerto Aventuras, near Playa del Carmen last year. (If one is staying at a resort in Mexico, they may as well choose all-inclusive!) While I didn't go swimming, I enjoyed hanging out by the beach, sipping margaritas, people-watching, and basking in the sun. I had on swimming trunks and a shirt.

Edit:

@Pondwater, since this particular resort in Mexico had its own private beach, I enjoyed spending time there. For the property I'm staying at in Oahu, the beach is right across the street. I feel it's more comfortable when I'm in a secluded area.

That's the same one! :techman:

Not that it matters, but are you sure? :D There are dozens of all-inclusives along Riviera Maya, such as Dreams, Hard Rock, Omni, etc. If I went this year, I considered staying in Playa del Carmen since I liked the shopping district on Avenida Cinco. :)

^ We had the wedding in Puerto Aventuras and the reception in Playa del Carmen, so that's what made me suspect it was the same resort.

@Gryffindorian, I'm curious what you think of all these stories that have been coming up out of Mexico recently about the crime and deaths in the resorts. Things like this.

I had never heard of incidents like these happen to tourists visiting Mexican resorts. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. From my own one-time experience only, the resort was the safest place to be. Puerto Aventuras is a closed community with security guards at the front gate. Even hotel lobby staff were required to get IDs, license plate numbers, and other info from taxis and external tour operators. I never knew these drownings, assaults, and drugging incidents were taking place within some resorts. My sister and I had our fair share of drinks, but we never had any problems.

How scary!

I just arrived here in Oahu Monday afternoon for a 5-day stay. Man, Honolulu has the worst airport in the world! No offense to anyone, but the airport looks so old. There's no one at the information desk to direct you. There's no signage anywhere indicating where the Uber and Lyft stops are. And it's a fairly small airport compared to others I've been to.

I'm staying at a resort near Waikiki. Honolulu is a typical American city. It's very urban, with tall buildings that are mostly hotels, if not corporate establishments. I like to go shopping, and the Ala Moana Center is just a few blocks down from my hotel.

The North Shore supposedly is more rural, and tomorrow I'll be going to the Polynesian Cultural Center.

It's quite muggy but not as bad as Cancun.

More observations:

To be honest, I wouldn't want to live here, as much as Oahu and the rest of Hawaii have very beautiful beaches and landscapes. Vacation, yes. Live here? No.

People would have to be very wealthy or make a lot of money to live a comfortable life in a city like Honolulu, or anywhere in Hawaii for that matter. Even if it was more affordable to live in the rural areas of the North Shore, with their lush mountains and pristine beaches, I would easily get bored due to lack of major retailers and venues, since they're trying to preserve the natural beauty of the countryside.

Besides, I don't surf, I don't swim, I don't go boating or fishing, nor am I interested in learning to do any of those.

That's the bitter irony of life in Hawaii. But it's very interesting to learn about another culture. The way I see it, it's either too urban or too rural in some areas, and way too pricy to really enjoy life.

Off to Madeira this summer!

Terra do Ronaldo? Boa viagem!!

My wife and Me moved to Europe eight months ago. We still don't know when we are gonna take the vacation. I just started this new job three weeks ago. But this weekend We will going to visit the Elzt castle in Germany, one hour driving from where we live.

I'm really looking forward to my trip to Germany for the Oktoberfest. I have never been there before and I would like to rediscover my German heritage.

Oh, who am I kidding. I'm in this for the beer tents, of course.

(Although there are other sites I would like to see, such as the Olympic stadia in Berlin and Munich. And I'd love to tour the Allianz Arena.)

Yep. Which is why I won’t live there but I do miss the food.
