IT IS SO EMBARRASSING I HAVE TO COVER MY EYES.. JUST THE THOUGHT OF THE END OF THAT EP MAKES ME FEEL LIKE SHOUTING..
Yeah. That sucks HUGE.That there were only seventy-nine episodes.
This sums it up nicely for me.
Vons
Things that sucked:
- That Gene Coon couldn't stay with the show.
- That NBC gave Season 3 a shitty timeslot and Roddenberry didn't care anymore.
- That demographics hadn't come into broader use earlier.
- That if all of the above had been different than S3 as a whole could have been better and maybe we might even have had a Season 4.
- That they didn't have more time and money for higher calibre f/x (even for the time).
- That we didn't get to a bit more variety in Starfleet designs.
- That we didn't get to see more of the Enterpise's interior.
- That Uhura, Sulu, Rand, Chekov and Chapel could have gotten at least one episode each with more to do (or perhaps something like a TOS version of TNG's "Lower Decks").
- That we didn't get to see one female starship or starbase commander to finally put the Janice Lester argument to rest.

I don't care about this at all. I never noticed the crappy effects when I first watched it during the reruns in the 70's (I am kind of dim about this stuff). And even if I notice it now I don't care at all.
By higher calibre f/x for the time I mean something closer to '60s feature film state-of-the-art as opposed to television budget state-of-the art.
I think those strings at the end of Catspaw are kind of adorable.

Why?
The episode itself is no where near as far fetched as people seem to think it is. Add into it top performances by Shatner and Woodward and you have an episode that is easily among the series Top 10.

Okay, I was riffing there on David Marcus- pride has little to do with it.
I just find Omega Glory so weirdly poignant concerning the "sacred words"- just like today, truth seems to be like to be hidden, and the understanding of that truth twisted & forgotten on many levels.
As relevant today as it was in the 60's.

I do get that, the hidden, forgotten, obscured truths. It's just coming from another country it comes across as painfully nationalistic especially as the nation itself is long defunct in the 23rd century. I would have preferred if Kirk had hearkened back to the formation of the Federation which for him was the Great Truth he based his career and ideals on. From a sci-fi writing point of view it would have also been interesting if the lost truth was from another culture entirely.. it could have been Spock resonating with a quote from Surak.

Oh Hey, I'll bash the sexism too. But it doesn't stop me from loving TOS. Which is why I could only come up with that one thing that sucked for this thread.
When was this? When did Kirk ever indicate he had any nationalism or patriotism towards the Federation? True he would on occasion in a professional way state "we're" from the Federation, but in Kirk's own heart and mind he from Earth.
