"Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film!

Re: "Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film

What is George Takei's stance on this rather exciting fan film? Is he happy that it will finally see the proverbial light of the day at some point soon in the future?

I haven't talked to him, but I would imagine that he would be happy about this. We plan on showing the film to him first before we post it online, to ensure that he is happy with the final cut.

Fantastic! Thanks for the reply to my question. I know you must be rather busy at this time.

A quick status update. The original CGI trailer has been re-edited, with a new musical score added. The live action trailer is being touched up, and will be posted in June. Right now I'm doing color correction and fixing sound on it. The videos will be posted at www.vimeo.com/johnatkin.

A third trailer will be made in a few months, once we have all the missing scenes filmed. After the third trailer is done, we will be releasing the film. Right now, Stan Woo is aiming to have the film finished in 2013. No set date at this time. We are operating on a budget of $0 right now, so the costs of getting the original film transferred has been holding us back a bit, but it is getting done. In mid-September, we will be filming the missing bridge scenes in LA.

Would some type of fund raiser help? Did you see what Mark Zicrady did with Space Comand?

Thanks! I'm now following your Vimeo channel!

Re: "Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film

Just getting back from Austin, Texas, where I was working on a short sci-fi film with some friends. Finished the work on the colour correction on the Super 8 for the 2nd trailer this morning. Waiting for a few new FX shots, and then I will be posting it online. Still a few weeks away, but we are getting there!

Meant to say, liked the updated teaser. The lens flares didn't bother me in the slightest. ;)

The 25 year old Yorktown: A Time to Heal master 3/4" Umatic SP tapes completed its final digitization this afternoon at 3:35 PM. The tapes underwent an extensive restoration process which started June 15, 2012. After an exhaustive search, DC Video of Burbank, CA was chosen as the facility to digitize the Yorktown Masters. DC Video is known for restoring Apollo Lunar Landing tapes for NASA. The process involved baking the master tapes at 130 degrees to re-adhere the magnetic particles to the base. The result is a sparkling 10 bit uncompressed master looking better than the original tapes. More information about DC Video can found at www.dcvideo.com.

Bravo! The picture looks pretty clear!

This was perhaps addressed earlier, but do any of the original film elements exist?

Yes they do. Not sure what condition they are all in now, as it was shot on super 8 over 25 years ago. The film was transferred to 3/4" Umatic SP tapes back in the late 90s. From what I have seen, it was a very good transfer.

Re: "Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film

I was asking because I wondered if it would be possible to scan the original film into hi-def without the intermediate step of the Umatic SP, but I realize there are probably cost issues with that.

Huge cost issues. It would cost a lot. But this looks really crisp, and I think people will be very pleased.

This is really an amazing piece of Trek history and I love every update. The behind the scenes photos are pretty cool and I am glad we have you guys passionately restoring this.
