"Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film!

Re: "Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film

We are now working on a full length trailer, that we hope to have done for mid-September. The trailer will feature old footage and new FX, and may also include a Klingon or two :klingon:

We will be filming the Klingon pilot scenes for the K-Fighter in August. The Klingons will have ridges like they did in the TOS movies.

Re: "Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film

Just had some of the script translated into Klingon yesterday for the opening scene of the film. All of the Klingon characters will be speaking Klingon in the film, with subtitles added for the viewer. Also have work starting on the Klingon Pilot's makeup and forehead applications this week, to give him a TMP style look.

Won't scenes filmed with modern cameras have much better quality than ones filmed twenty years ago? Or will they also be shot on film?

I'm not going to get too involved with discussing the technical aspects of filming at this time, as all of that is still being worked out. That said, every effort will be made to match the new footage with the old. Our goal is to have it look seamless. Even the new FX will have film grain added to them so that they fit in with the existing footage.

Re: "Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film

I am heading to Los Angeles next week and meeting with Stan Woo (Producer) to discuss the film. Picking up footage from original 8mm to put a new live action trailer together, that will include new FX. The brand new FX that have been shown in the teaser trailer will be integrated with the super 8 footage so that it blends in together, so that it looks like the FX where shot on 8mm.

Production on the Klingon pilot scene is now under way. We will be filming the scene in late October. Expect to see more pictures soon as the production continues.

I found this on Youtube:

Some clips from the original principal photography -- about 2 minutes.

Everytime someone posts that old, washed out looking trailer, a part of me dies inside... lol... Expect a new trailer with much better footage, and new FX, in a few weeks. I'm going through the footage right now, and it is 100x better than anything in that trailer.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, you can see our new FX trailer at www.youtube.com/atkin5000

Captain:

That video popped up on the sidebar when I went for your trailer (which was awesome by the way.) The old video had notes saying that it was from an old, beat up VHS tape. I have been anxious to see any of it since I became aware of it in the last year. Until today, I only saw a few stills.

If you have the original stock and when you put that together with the new SFX, you will have yourself quite a show. I am looking forward to it and James Shigeta doing Trek as Admiral Nogura no less !

Good luck! Thanks for resurrecting this project !

His name is Ma'k, thanks a lot. You think he's acting, but he's not.

Ten points for the reference. Five more for the Canadian angle. ;)

Haha... we already filmed his scene, and he was great! A true Klingon warrior, if ever there was one.

Qapla!

Easy: from the animated ROCK AND RULE movie by Nelvana (mid-80's wasn't it?). Sung by Iggy Pop IIRC.

Always had a case of giggles when Omar starts singing : ''you're so pretty, you're so pretty... :) )

Won't scenes filmed with modern cameras have much better quality than ones filmed twenty years ago? Or will they also be shot on film?

Good question.

We shot the film using a Canon 1014XLS which at the time was the most cutting edge S8 cameras other than what Beaulieu had in that format. The Canon had a stellar 10-1 zoom and excellent optic quality.

As an experiment, I figured if I maximized the technical quality within the context Super8 and we transferred directly to 3/4" video without touching the S8 reversal positives, we could get what might appear to be low grade 35mm, or at worst average 16mm when viewed on a TV screen.

http://www.super8camera.com/super8filmstock.php

Being TOS was a television format, and that's what we wanted to embellish, we figured it could work. The dailies were outstanding and better than we expected. Although more costly, the other reason I went for S8 was shooting in video didn't have the available color saturation and hue we needed to mimic the vintage 'in living color' tones like many of the TOS episodes were lit. Gaston Biraben understood what I was looking for and did some incredible work making the most of the format.

Today, thanks to innovations with DV its easier to get the old film look and the resonant grain etc...added for effect. So I think mixing old and new should result in something we were looking for as a finished piece. Thankfully the original masters were found so we have something to finish.

P.S. I directed this old beast
