X-Wing and TIE Fighter to be rereleased w/ modern PC compatabiltiy

I remember that one! Wild level. I kinda liked that escort mission, actually. Makes me want to go replay that game, come to think of it.

Chuckle. Reading about those levels caused me to have the same thoughts. I dug out my N64 but my kid got out of hand before I could start playing. I will have to dust off the cartridges this weekend.

Thanks to Good Old Games, the classic LucasArts games X-Wing and TIE Fighter will soon be getting digitally re-released:

Special downloadable versions of both X-Wing and Tie Fighter will soon be released on Good Old Games. They'll be $10 each.

For that price you're getting not just the special editions of the games (which had slightly higher resolutions and improved sound, as well all of both games' expansions), but more importantly they'll be editions of the games that will run on a modern PC without the need to tinker.
Kotaku

I've never played either game before, so they'll be new to me. Can't wait. :techman:

Also, according to the article, GoG will soon be selling other classic LucasArts games as well.

ETA: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, and Sam & Max Hit the Road have also been made available today.

I miss this kind of game, and wish that more like it were being made now; this is a big buy for me. Too bad these games aren't also on consoles.

Very pleased to hear about this release. All the point and click adventures I picked up in the LucasArts collection packs (remember those?) work on any version of Windows I've used and even on my Wii and DS using SCUMM.

But I was never quite able to get TIE Fighter to work under Windows XP or 7. And, I found I've lost one of my X-Wing floppy discs :(

Looking forward to getting back into the fray. What was it your commander said at the start of one mission, "For the greater glory of the Empire, all enemies must die"?

I don't recall it being that bad? I made it through all the campaigns (except for the expansion), I couldn't even finish the first X-wing campaign.

X-Wing was also pretty hard, even with shielded ships. TF depended on what settings you used. You could always set things like infinite missiles, turn off ship collisions, make your ship invulnerable, etc. But the only real way to play was with full damage on and limited ammo. ;) I think you could do the same with XW, as well!

For whatever reason I remember TIE Fighter being somewhat easier, as well, whereas X-Wing was just a total ball-buster for me

I don't think I finished X-Wing, just ran out of time before I got TIE Fighter. But I do remember finishing TIE Fighter only because I used a cheat or option to make one single mission an awful lot easier. A mission where a bunch of heavy assault shuttles take on you, a Star Destroyer and some space stations/platforms. They knock out the Destroyer pretty easily and the rest of the mission was spent peeling them off the stations to stop them capturing them. I could never stop them playing the game straight up.

Any other mission, I was able to finish with the assistance of a play guide.

For some reason I always found X-Wing a lot harder than Tie Fighter. I think it's because in TF I took a very aggressive approach, knowing I had no shields half the time and just relied on the ability to out manoeuvre and outrun the enemy. Whereas in X-Wing I tended to get overwhelmed with micro managing systems.

Indeed I'm pretty sure I never completed the X-Wing campaign, but I know I did finish Tie Fighter.

Personally, I'm looking forward to X-Wing Alliance. That was always my favourite, even if the final mission felt a bit rushed.

It is probably fair to say that there's no worse of a sitting duck ship than a fucking Y-Wing. At least all the TIEs are pretty fast and maneuverable. Y-Wings are pig slow pieces of crap.

Anyone know if it's possible to run these without the graphics being stretch/squashed on a widescreen display? I wouldn't mind running it with black bars on the sides, but the distortion is a bit distracting.

One of the few insights provided by the Clone Wars TV series was that Y-wings were brought into service during the Clone Wars. So the Rebels were using decades old, obsolete fighter which was so much slower and weaker than it's more modern counterparts and opponents.

I suppose I'm running the Windows version (TF98). The 95 version has some really messed up graphics for me (like yellow instead of black space!), so I'm concentrating on 98 first.

The Windows version isn't really fixable--no one's ever patched it to support widescreen and it can't run in a windowed mode at all, nor change resolutions.

This leaves the DOSBox version. In the folder for it there's a file called dosbox_tie.conf. You can edit the graphics options to your liking, though if you don't want stretching what you'll ultimately do is run it in a window with some degree of pixel scaling/doubling.

Open the dosbox_tie.conf file in a text editor (e.g. Notepad) and look for the [sdl] section. The options for it are described here.

Let me know if you'd like me to play around with it to find optimal settings. Shouldn't be too hard.

Good to know! As for the Windows version, I suppose I can always hook the laptop up to the 4:3 LCD monitor I have around here.

That's mostly true. Except, of the three main game fighters (X-wing, Y-wing, and A-wing), they are the only ones with ion cannons. In many situations, that makes them better for engaging assault gunboats, because instead of having the gunboats explode in your face when you destroy them, you can simply disable them when their shields are down, then kill them later from a safe distance farther than point blank range, as during dogfighting the gunboats try to stay close and try to collide with you. Even if another ship gets them first and you don't get the score for killing them, you often have better survivability. Also, if you fly with your shields discharging, you get a speed boost, which is better than getting repeatedly hit at slower speeds. That's true for all ships of course, but it really matters most for the Y-wing, since it's lumbering.

I think TIE Fighter has better mission design in general... and you tend to be part of the overwhelming odds, rather than faced with it.

XWA will be great too. Second online multiplayer game I ever played (After Quake 3). Has a special place in my heart - and the campaign too. A digital version will be great for avoiding the buggery of getting an old game to work with a modern OS, plus I can't be bothered to dig my old game disc out of storage.

Which seems to be an invention of the video games, since ILM gave the Y-Wing comparable speed and maneuverability to the X-Wing and TIE Fighter in Return of The Jedi

TIE Fighter had improved tactical keyboard functions, such as ENTER = match speed with target and A = select craft attacking target. The original X-Wing lacked both of those keys and others, but the X-Wing special edition picked up the ENTER key function, which is incredibly useful, and makes you just simply nimbler.
