X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (Casting, Rumors, Pics till release)

I think X2 is nearly the perfect superhero movie in terms of characterization, story, pacing and almost everything else in between. I can't tell you how many times I've sat down and watched that movie without any sense of boredom or need to fast-forward through scenes or moments.

I've been hearing that the running time for X-Men: First Class is somewhere near 2 hours and 20 minutes, with other sites claiming it's actually 130 minutes. Either way, I'm glad we're getting a two-hour X-Men movie. I felt kind of ripped off with the last two movies being a little over 1 hour and 40 minutes long. Especially with the X-Men, I feel like the running time should at the very least be 2 hours.

What's funny is that you probably could have made Cyclops an interesting character after Jean Grey's death. I understand why he received so minimal screen-time in X-Men: The Last Stand, but I just found it amusing since they could have written him a really interesting character arc for the third film.

Cyclops was probably the least interesting character in the X-Men films anyway.
Cyclops is probably the least interesting X-Men in general.
No, that would be Gambit.
That's only because they weren't interested in Cyclops. It was all about Wolverine with them.
Well, he not Cyclops is a Marvel mascot and the easiest to market to little boys & women.
So, it's kinda expected.
It's expected, yeah, but it's still annoying. Especially since Cyke is supposed to be Xavier's right-hand man and the team leader on the field.

But I seem to be one of the few people for whom Cyclops is their favorite X-Man, so feel free to ignore me. :p

I always thought the shortened screen time was Fox and Tom Rothman punishing James Marsden for co-starring in Singer's Superman Returns. Pettiness overcoming storytelling.

Well, it was. When Singer jumped ship to helm Superman, Tom Rothman was pretty pissed. He canceled Singer's two year development deal, which included directing X-Men 3, and had a security guard literally escort Singer off the 20th Century Fox Studios lot, only to allow him to re-enter the lot the day later so he could direct the pilot of House.

According to X3 co-writer Zak Penn, Cyclops was originally going to be completely written out of X-Men: The Last Stand. Penn and co-writer Simon Kinberg came up with an alternative where Cyclops would appear for some scenes and then be killed within the first 15 minutes of the movie. Penn said you couldn't do the Dark Phoenix storyline without including Cyclops at least a little bit.

However, you could easily say it was scheduling conflicts with James Marsden shooting Superman Returns at the same time which prohibited him from having a considerable role in X-Men: The Last Stand, but that's probably the story Rothman wanted you to hear. I even heard at the time that Rothman wanted Marsden to back out of Superman because he was contractually linked to the X-Men series*, but even he couldn't put the kibosh on that one.

*Singer didn't get his way with all of the casting for Superman Returns. Shawn Ashmore, who played Bobby Drake/Iceman in the X-Men movies, was Singer's first choice to play Jimmy Olsen but Rothman intervened and Ashmore had to back out. Similarly, Singer wanted Hugh Laurie for Perry White but once more "scheduling conflicts" and Rothman/Fox disallowed Laurie from joining the production so Singer was forced to cast Frank Langella instead.

There were parts of X2 that really dragged for me after the first viewing.

Cyclops would not have gotten more to do if the film's running time was increased. The actor had commitments to Superman Returns, hence his limited time in the X-Men: The Last Stand.
So then you give it too the other characters I mentioned.

I don't know if that is a question or a statement, but I'll respond anyway. I think Kitty was fine. I don't know what more could have been done with her given the story. I feel she was utilized well.

Jean-as-Phoenix was also, I feel, used well. I liked the "new" relationship dynamic between Jean-Magneto-Prof. X that developed and how it was portrayed. I feel they went into it enough without it feeling shortchanged.

Angel, I'll grant you, could have been explored a little more.

However, I do feel that, though far from perfect, X-Men: The Last Stand isn't that bad of a movie the way most people make it out to be. Then again, I'm not really all that much of an X-Men fan and feel that all three movies are on par with one another.

I liked the Last Stand. The idea of the film, the idea of a "cure" and it's good and bad implications, as well as those in between, presented a dilemma in this universe unmatched in the previous films, the true germ of a real story[ and it was handled well. X2 was a great film, but strip everything away, and the story was only about one person's prejudice and not really about much else, whereas The Last Stand covered gray areas all over the place. What the film lacked was the flow that X2 had. The writers already had every chess piece in play before the story starts. I'd have liked to "discover" a character like Leech rather than have him appear at Alcatraz from the onset.

First Class will hopefully be the full 140 minutes. Now I am calm and look at all you impatient people!

That mansion is the same one they used for Hex. I wonder how MF feels coming full circle from being on a crappy British television show to a comic book blockbuster?

Posters should be at the theaters soon too, if not already. I haven't been this month so I'll have to snoop! I really want a Magneto t-shirt (I think my husband doesn't actually know who Fassbender is) but Hot Topic doesn't have any merchandise yet.

i saw a 'First Class' t-shirt at Target this week. but, it was the comic First Class and not the movie. still, it was pretty cool.

Apparently more Spots! Man, bet the first streamline dvd release is going to have a lot of these!
