X-Men FC: Only $56 Million estimated for opening weekend.

I will agree with you guys that the friendship should have been longer. I think I would have had the falling out occur in the next movie but perhaps they did it this way because they didn't anticipate that there would be another one and wanted to take care of in in the first movie? Something I thought of.

I've definitely thought about that. They weren't assured a sequel, and who knows, we might not see a sequel anyway. I think it was the filmmakers just tying things to the Singer movies in case we don't see a sequel. Kind of disappointing, I know, but part of the filmmaking process- you never know if you're going to be able to make another.

Well the UK takings are out for 3-5 June ~£5.4m(~US$9m) shown at 507 cinemas earning £10707 per cinema

I agree some of the secondary character weakness and slightly rushed relationship between Charles and Erik was because they didn't know if they would have the luxury of a second or even third film. I know, I know the biz, but it is a shame that someone can't say 'this story takes two movies' and the wallet says 'okay'. Instead it is 'comprise your tale and do better and get a second chance'.

In some ways, an all X and Magneto movie would have been even more exceptional. I didn't mind Riptide, as I took him as the silent henchmen Jaws type. Mystique had what one line in the original movie? Angel was just a waste. Banshee was fun, but I really think they only existed to lengthen the battle. Havok has a week of practice and still can't shoot his beams but Angel had no practice and can zoom all over and aim perfect spit every time? That was really the most unbelievable part of the film for me.

Oh yeah I forgot, in "X-Men" Xavier doesn't know where Mags got his psi-proof helmet, that is an error.

He said Magneto found some way to block Xavier's telepathy. He didn't outright say, "I have no idea the helmet is the reason I can't mentally read Magneto".

I'm pretty sure that the proto-helmet was a kind of commentary (not sure if that is the right word) for the Russians supposed psi-ops programs they ran during the Cold War. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull touched on this as well with Cate Blanchette's character.

You know, I'm a little tired of people saying a couple of little inconsistencies makes First Class a reboot and that those quibbles are unacceptable. All comic books and their various media incarnations have them. The Joker killed Bruce Wayne's parents, but then he also killed the first Robin, but in the 1989 Batman, there is no Robin and the Joker is killed. Oh my God we have to retcon!! Big whoop. It isn't like they did something drastic like make Xavier a woman or anything. Now then, as opposed to Bond where changes per film are completely accepted and we know they all go together regardless of changes. Spock smiles, Data uses contractions. It is okay people. I'd expect people to not see the movie because it can be expensive. I don't expect people to protest over who has hair or what age folks say they were when they met.

First Class isn't a flop. Even if the numbers eventually decline, it still earned plenty of acclaim that will carry over, maybe even to some hardware. Years from now if someonme is summing up the franchise, they will say something like '1 and 2 great, director changes ruin 3, Wolverine though popular at the box office brought the franchise to a new low. First class, though making less post recession, was a critical hit and restore faith to the series'.

The end. Can we stop complaining now? I'm trying to get my husband to go, and my hinge is that he likes Watchmen, which again, didn't do well but turned out to be a nice little video release. :)

Haha, I liked how he says:

“I didn’t read the comic books but it doesn’t matter, the cartoon is the same f*cking thing.”

but yeah, sounds like sour grapes.

Hey, Brett Ratner? "Go fuck yourself". X-Men: The Last Stand was a shitty movie. X-Men: First Class wasn't. Deal with it, bub.

He said it in a manner that suggests he has no idea how Magneto is blocking the telepathy and Magneto makes it a point to indicate his helmet during the train station battle so it's pretty implied that the helmet was a new innovation in the first movie.

KB24 it's not that the movie is inconsitant with stories in the other comics that's somewhat expected. It's that the movie contradicts the other X-Men movies, even just the Singer ones. That's the inconsitancy people are talking about that suggests this movie may be a reboot.

Maybe in X-Men First Class 2, Emma Frost or Mastermind manages to erase Xavier's memory of the helmet's psi-blocking properties

Perhaps it was just a reminder.

Or that it's not the same helmet?

Consider that Charles, and Emma get more powerful or sneakier as they get older, so his "helmets" too need to be upgraded, modified, so even if there are periods when Eric (that still feels wrong) only thinks he is protected its really an arms race of the mind that they train themselves to think at frequency which will penetrate his helmet and he makes new helmets. A mind race? Fuck.

Clearly not assumed to be the same continuity. When you get into films vs. comics it's a different issue. But since you bring up Batman, the Nolanverse is obviously a complete reboot of the previous series. How do we know this? Because Batman's parents can't reasonably be killed by Joe Chill and then somehow resurrected just in time to be killed all over again by the Joker ( or vice versa ).

Matthew Vaughn said:
But my main rule was, ‘You know what, we’re trying to reboot and start a whole new X-Men franchise’ and therefore, making a film work on its own two feet was far more important than trying to be referential to the prior movies."

But I'm wondering where this reboot mentality comes from? Where everything has to either be totally together or outright stated as refreshed? What did people think when Christopher Reeves took over from George Reeves? Did they have to compare and contrast? I'm saying even with contradiction and inconsistencies, why can't one like both?

Overall outside of one or two things I think First Class does fit in with the spirit of the first two, so much to the point that you can just take these 3 together and leave the other 2. I think sequel territory would get hairy, as you lead up to right before the first film. And frankly, for the most part the Star Wars prequels matched the Originals and yet they sucked. So total internal consistency isn't all it is cracked up to be. :) Really, try and study the layout of The Golden Girls house. It is like the chicken or the egg.

When the Superman movie came out it was clear it was its own contnuity from having the origin story in it and it being the first movie about the character to come out in decades.

In X-Men it's tougher to know it's a new contnuity given that it's a movie franchise that's been active over the last 10 years and even featured actors in it from the original movies, so the "reboot" is a lot more vague and harder to see.
